Notes for Sunday 17 August 2025

Dear friends,

The flowers in the picture today were donated by the flower show to cafe church in the marquee last Sunday. We had a most wonderful service with lots to think about. It was lovely to see so many people gathered celebrating.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 10 August 2025

Dear friends,

Yesterday evening was a quiet moment before the week leading up to the Capel show. Leaving the Crown after a pleasant couple of hours with friends we saw this beautiful sight. God’s creation is wonderful and we must ensure to be appreciative and thankful at all times.

The Capel show will be over by next Sunday but there is a lot to be done still and if you can spare some time to prepare or to help on the day please contact Helen Burt : helenmb0909@gmail.com or call/text on 07990597553. Not only is this one the main fundraisers for our churches this year, it ia also great fun to be part of the team.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Time to rest?

Revd Liz Richardson

August – a time to take a breather perhaps? Schools out and for some it is holiday time.
As I write I am preparing to take a trip to Portugal for a few days with my daughter and grand daughters which I am very much looking forward to. I like it that usually the pace can be a
little more relaxed in August, church wise, and we can recharge our batteries for the start of the Autumn term. We have just held our final church club before the end of the summer term and it was a lovely opportunity to say goodbye to our older children who will beginning at their new School – The Weald – in September. The school have not been informed of any decision as to the recent consultation so we know that Scott Broadwood will remain on site for the next two terms. Hopefully a decision will be made soon though so everyone can prepare for the future.
Whether the School remains in the village or a mile or so down the road, Scott Broadwood is a terrific place to begin a child’s formal education. Everyone is so caring and wants the best
for the children. We have throughly enjoyed running our weekly afterschool Church Club there and we told we are the most popular club. It has been such a joy to see the children learn and enthuse about the Bible stories they enact each week and to do a craft related to the topic of the day, along with an old-fashioned tea! We look forward to continuing our club next term.

Our newly ordained Revd Gill is enjoying her first weeks in ministry and it is lovely for me to be able to help and support her in her curacy. The ordination service was wonderful at the
Cathedral and when each person’s parish contingency stood up in the congregation, it seems Gill had the most supporters! Fantastic stuff and next year we do it all over again when Gill is
ordained again – this time as a Priest! Then Gill will be able to preside at Holy Communion, give blessings and give the absolution for sins as well as conduct weddings and baptisms!
All very exciting. Something else to look forward to is that as part of the Surrey Weald Team we will be participating in the appointment process for our new Team Rector at Newdigate, following Revd Andrew’s recent retirement. So we are looking forward to welcoming the person who God is calling to our team.

This last month we also had a great weekend at the Capel Military Show raising a good amount of money which will help us to pay our Parish Share – more about that in the Autumn.
We wish to thank the Military Show committee for giving us this annual opportunity. It really is a life saver for us. Now we are gearing ourselves up for the Capel Show where we
will be running a Burger Stall. This was very popular last year so we aim to increase our stock to meet the hungry needs of our wonderful customers. We are always looking for volunteers
so if you have always wanted to help on a burger stall now’s your chance! I hope you have a relaxing summer and can rest a while. Our Lord Jesus invites those who
are weary and burdened to find rest in him. It is about surrendering one’s worries and burdens to Jesus and experiencing his peace and comfort (Matthew 11.28-30).
I pray that you may know his blessing.

With my love and prayers as ever

Liz

Notes for Sunday 3 August 2025

Dear friends,

Last month we took our house guests to the Hannah Peschar sculpture garden (see photo). It was the first time we went in the more than 20 years we have lived close by and we have missed out! It’s a beautifully laid out garden with a changing collection of sculptures. Worth a visit!

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Issue no 95 August 2025

Welcome to the August issue.  The issue is packed with all the usual news, articles and puzzles.  Happy reading!

What we can know about God is so great and glorious that we can confidently trust what we do not know about Him. Our God is a good God.

Notes for Sunday 27 July 2025

Dear friends,

Summer keeps on giving this year but I for one am pleased that temperatures above 30 Celsius are off the cards for now.

Many water companies have introduced hosepipe bans due to water levels in reservoirs falling very low. In our part of the world the reservoirs are natural aquifers in the North downs. Due to their size they do not empty very fast but they no longer fill up to former levels so we would do well to use water wisely anyway: this is not a limitless source of this precious liquid.

The picture is of the dining room in Leith Hill Place with a gorgeous stencilling detail on the chimney.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 20 August 2025

Dear friends,

This rather battered purple emperor landed on our picknick table last week. I guess he (or she) would not have lasted very long after I took this picture but it is nice to know that these beauties reside in our garden.

God bless,

Notes for Sunday 13 July 2025

Dear friends,

I hope you are all well and coping with the weather. At least for now the temperature goes down to levels that make sleeping possible.

The image today is a detail of the magnificent copper beech in the garden of Bob and Judy. Nature is so beautiful!

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 6 July 2025

Dear friends,

This week I heard two very inspired and inspiring speakers on inequality in society: Gary Stevenson and Kwajo Tweneboa. Both worth looking up to hear what they have to say. It took place in the union chapel in Islington and I just had to take a picture of the beautiful ceiling.

Please spare a thought for the organisers and other volunteers who slave away at the Capel military show to raise funds for our church. I’m sure they’re all glad it’s not as warm today.

God bless,

Dineke

Notes for Sunday 29 June 2025

Dear friends,

Last Monday I found myself walking across Chelsea bridge and could not resist taking this photo. Only now, looking at the picture, did I notice the dove in the centre. It is holding an olive branch. How I wish for peace, not just for the 13 major wars in the world but for all the conflict. Think how far the money and effort could go if it wasn’t spent on fighting others.

Please be aware that we have no service in the parish this week so all can come to the service of ordination in the cathedral. Details are in the notes and Dik still has room in the car if anyone needs a lift.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd
