About Capel Church

St John The Baptist Church, Capel is a small friendly village church in the centre of the village. We are part of the Surrey Weald Team of parishes close to the south Surrey border with West Sussex. The other parishes in the team are St Peter’s, Newdigate, and St Mary Magdelene, South Holmwood. Our church offers a variety of worship, both separate and as part of the Weald Team.

Notes for Sunday 25 June 2023

Dear friends,

Firstly let me inform you that the website calendar stopped working this week. Dik apologises that unfortunately he can’t promise it will be working again before September as it needs thorough investigation.

Don’t forget to check the lists at the back of our churches to see if there are still cakes required for next week’s tea stall at the Capel military show and I’m sure Helen would love to hear from you if you can help over the weekend. One of the perks is free access to the show so maybe some friends or family members can be roped in on that promise?

The picture today is of some mushrooms in an area that only two months ago hosted a sea of bluebells.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 18 June 2023

Dear friends,

We have been very spoilt with the weather: warm and sunny with balmy evenings to enjoy our gardens and water our plants. Our back garden is a haven for insects at the moment with the rose (second picture) alive with them feeding on pollen. It’s a shame I can not let you all experience the fragrance and the buzz. The main picture is of a bumblebee feeding in a foxglove flower.

Apart from the usual notes and readings, I have attached a list of links that may help you follow up on last week’s café church. Whether you are interested in checking your own carbon footprint, reading up on background information or just need some help with making day to day choices, there will be something there for you.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 11 June 2023

Dear friends,

First and foremost, please be informed that there are changes to the service in Ockley this Sunday: contrary to previous notes, a Holy Communion service will be held at the normal time in St Margaret’s.

What beautiful weather it has been recently and it doesn’t look like changing any time soon. I enjoyed a wonderful walk this week to the north of Capel (see picture). The colours were beautiful and the air was full of birds and insects. Luckily we have had a very wet spring so the birds have been able to feed their young due to the relatively soft soil. Let’s hope that stems the tide of decline in numbers of our feathered friends for a while.

Attached is the menu for Eco cafe church. It promises to be an enlightening service so please come if you can. The theme is ‘If not now, then when?’

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 4 June 2023

Dear friends,

The June issue of Inspire is out and can be read or downloaded from the PCC website now:

InSpire Magazine – The Parish of Capel and Ockley (capelandockleychurch.org.uk)<www.capelandockleychurch.org.uk/inspire-magazine/>

If you follow this link you can sign up to automatically receive Inspire and Liz’s monthly letter via email as well as these weekly notes. More and more of you are doing this and we are very grateful for that! You can also pick up a paper copy of Inspire from one of our churches.

Attached word document explains how many people will be needed for our fundraising event at the Military show in Capel, the first weekend of July. Please read through and see if you could volunteer for one or two shifts. There are many different jobs, some public-facing, some behind the scenes and there is bound to be something you like.

The picture this week is of the church in Abergavenny. The rose covered wall had to be captured!

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 28 May 2023

Dear friends,

The pictures today are all about crimson clover. I had not come across these pretty plants before last week. These pictures were taken last Tuesday on my walk home from Newdigate.

Unfortunately I will not be able to run the LOAF food stall tomorrow after the service as I have a chest infection and am running a temperature. Look for me at the next cafe church on June 11th in the Crown.

Lastly, I am very pleased to say that half of those who receive this email are now signed up to receive it via our website. If you haven’t got round to doing this, please look at the instructions below. It really makes the life of yours truly much simpler if you do.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 21 May 2023

Dear friends,

This morning, when digging some well-rotted manure from our muck heap to feed the roses, I first unearthed what I thought was a huge earth worm. Closer inspection revealed it was a smallish slow worm, probably a young one. Shortly after I came across some leathery egg shells, most likely from a grass snake. They were empty so probably last year’s but still a very exciting find. A Facebook friend remarked that I had a reptilian morning.

May I remind you that next Sunday 28/5 will be the launch of our LOAF stall, with fair trade organic biscuits with our after-service coffee to give you a flavour of what will be on sale. Most of the offerings will be both Organic and Fair Trade. There will be coffee, several teas, sugar, honey, biscuits, cocoa and more.

Lastly, please sign up for baking cakes and serving at the Military show the first weekend of July and also consider helping at the salad wrap stall at our very own Capel Show on 19 August. Both are tremendous fundraising occasions for our churches and an opportunity to be visible in the local community.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 14 May 2023

Dear friends,

The weather hasn’t been very sunny and the mushrooms feel distinctly out of season. Luckily the rose offers much needed compensation and cheers me up no end. Let’s just hope that last year’s empty reservoirs get a good top-up!

Tomorrow’s cafe church in the Crown has a theme of Christian Aid. If you are planning to come, our coffee offering will be more like a continental breakfast. We hope that many of you will come and make a generous donation to Christian Aid for a generous offering of assorted fresh pastries, home-made bread with jam and honey (some for sale too!), fruit and other delights.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd
