Our first project, to start a small community orchard at The Friends Meeting House Capel, is under way and we pan to plant trees in late January (probably 18th or 25th). We must now agree the fruits and varieties that will do well locally and buy them. The formal side with the Quakers is to be finalised when they meet in early December, and the Capel Friends’ Meeting House have secured a small grant towards the trees, bee equipment, etc.
On C.A.P.E.L Community Orchards (Capel Action to Produce Everything Locally) we are a newly formed group, springing out of local activities such as Capel Goes Green, the Sustainability Day run by Friends Meeting House Capel, the Vision Day run by St John The Baptist Church Capel, and general local interest. The aim seems like a tall order, but it’s well worth working towards locally produced, quality food and goods, and it is a positive action for local sustainability. We also hope to run a Sustainability event locally, and do outings to Grace and Flavour ( community orchards near Guildford), the Physic Garden and Brogdale (National Fruit Collection, Faversham)
2013 had been our setting up year, 2014 will be a year of activity to which we look forward to eagerly.
