Weekly news sheet for Christmas and Boxing Day

Dear Friends,

It’s finally arrived, Christmas 2021 – Merry Christmas to you all! I do hope all your preparations are finished and that you are warm and well, I look forward to seeing some of you at church services over the weekend, but many I know are choosing to stay at home this year, being extra careful with the rise in covid cases.

If you would like to watch an online church service during your festivities can I recommend the ones broadcast from The Church of England. Their services are available through our website and can be found here:
www.capelandockleychurch.org.uk/services/services-on-line/church-of-england-services-on-line/

If you would like to come to one of our services here is the run down, the times are slightly different to normal, so please read carefully:

Tonight (Friday) 24 December 11.00pm Midnight Holy Communion, Capel Church

Tomorrow (Christmas Day) 10.00am Parish Celebration Worship, Ockley

Sunday Boxing Day
9.30am. Matins at Ockley taken by Gill Christie at Ockley
9.30am Holy Communion with Rev Jo at Capel

I attach the sheets and readings for both Christmas Day and Boxing Day Sunday. The Christmas Day weekly sheet is different to normal and includes a Christmas quiz. The answers will be emailed out next week, but if you would like to send me your answers there maybe a small prize for the one who gets most right! Here are the questions:

1. Only two gospels have the details of Jesus’s conception and birth, which are they?

2. What was the name of the angel who appeared to Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin to tell her she would give birth to John the Baptist?

3. This same angel appeared to Mary to tell of Jesus’s birth – how many months later was this?

4. Which prophet prophesied that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem?

5. How did Joseph and Mary get to Bethlehem?

6. When the shepherds went looking for Jesus what was the sign they were to look for?

7. Which Old Testament prophet had the most to say about the birth of Christ?

8. How many wisemen or Magi came to see Jesus and how old was Jesus when they arrived?

9. When Joseph and Mary took the baby Jesus to the temple for the purification rites they met two people, who were they?

10. Which emperor ordered all the boys under 2 in Bethlehem to be killed?

11. Where did Jesus and his parents move to, to escape from this?

12. How long did they stay there?

Many of you will have seen the wonderful nativity scene outside Rev Liz’s house – it’s even larger than last year and looks fantastic. I’ve been down to take photos of it a couple of times. Each time I have met people also admiring it and taking their own pictures. The lady yesterday morning commented that she found it very moving – how wonderful that Rev Liz has been able to touch people’s hearts in this way. Do go and have a look if you haven’t already – our photo of the week is of course a picture of the scene at night time.

I hope all of you have the most fantastic day tomorrow, please say a prayer for all those who will be alone or in trouble this Christmas – may 2022 be a year of new beginning for them.

With love and prayers

Weekly news sheet for Sunday 19 December 2021

Dear Friends,

My goodness it’s been a tough week, the news has just got worse and worse, lockdowns loom and it sometimes feels that we are getting nowhere. It would be easy for us all to want to curl up in a little ball and not go out again until spring arrives, but then I read Revd Liz’s latest newsletter ‘Keep looking up’. She is so right we have to look up to see all the beauty that surrounds us, even with the pandemic still raging and Christmas plans looking precarious there is hope and joy and beauty to be seen, just as there was in Bethlehem in the days of Jesus’s birth. Many of you know that I find walking a great solace, it connects me to the created world and gives me time to admire it all, even when it’s wet or freezing cold I never regret going for a walk.

This Sunday’s services are as follows:
9.30am Matins at Ockley with Graham Everness
10.30am Family communion at Capel
6.00pm Nine lessons and Carols at Capel

Due to the increasing numbers of Covid cases we have taken the decision to not serve refreshments after services for the moment. Please let us know if you would prefer to be seated in a socially distanced area. We will do our best to accommodate you. Finally, a reminder that masks are now mandatory in church unless you are exempt on medical grounds.

If you can’t come into church at the moment but have access to the internet you can watch the Church of England weekly service on their YouTube channel here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2Kq-zw8K-U <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2Kq-zw8K-U>. These Services are also published on our own website here: https://www.capelandockleychurch.org.uk/services/services-on-line/church-of-england-services-on-line/.

The weekly sheets and readings are attached as normal, and our photos this week are of the wonderful flower arrangements and Christmas decorations in Capel Church – the flower arrangers have excelled themselves – do go and take a look.

With love and prayers

Keep looking up!

Revd Liz Richardson

As I trudge along walking the dog I have realised that I spend most of the time with my head down looking at the ground!! I am of course looking where I am going in all this mud and slush that wintertime seems to bring these days, but it also is a bit of a habit. It reminds me of the wonderful people that LS Lowry the artist painted, as many of his figures seemed to be bowed, their bodies leaning forward into the bleak greyness of the industrial landscapes. The thing is when you are perhaps deep in thought studying the ground you miss what is going on around you, particularly in the countryside!

It pays to look up doesn’t it and some people who did exactly that are the magi, those wise men who travelled in search of the Christ child. They had observed his star at its rising and followed it to Bethlehem where they were rewarded by the sight before them. All of our texts during this season of Epiphany in January tell of how different people recognised who Jesus was. The culmination of all this is marked by the Feast of the Presentation at the Temple otherwise known by us as Candlemas. This is the feast day at which we traditionally hold our annual Christingle service at Capel. It is a very special time when we are reminded once more before we start our journey towards the season of Lent, that Jesus is the light of the world for all peoples. This is symbolised by the candle on the Christingle orange along with the sweeties and fruits which we all enjoy. All proceeds go to The Children’s Society who help bring hope to many children and young people across the country.

The work and research that The Children’s Society does is very interesting. Recently I along with other clergy in our diocese heard the CEO of The Children’s Society speak. The society has recently published ‘The Good Childhood Report’ which has found that modern life continues to erode the happiness of young people, worried about school, friendships and how they look. It was also alarming to hear that there are more children in poverty in the 21st century than in the 19th century. This statement is borne out by the great need we discovered last month as we prepared Christmas goodie bags and hampers for families in need.

It would be easy to feel downhearted about all these things, to look down as we each trudge along through January, what with Covid variants, bleak weather and the good old January blues! But do what I intend to do which is to stop looking down, try looking up. Yes we will notice things that challenge but also lots that will bring us much needed joy. Let’s help bring some light to shine in difficult places; you can contribute to the work of The Children’s Society by joining us at Candlemas or contact me separately to donate. Wishing you and yours a very happy new year and keep looking up!
With my love and prayers

Revd Liz

Weekly news sheet for Sunday 12 December 2021

Dear friends,

This email comes to you a little earlier than normal as I am away for the weekend, normal service will be resumed next week!

I have spent most of this week feeling cold. Either I’ve been walking the dog in freezing weather or I’ve been trying to catch up on admin and have found my toes turning into little icebergs, but at least we have heating available to us. As my toes thawed out my thoughts turned to all those who have to choose between heat and food on cold days like these, how awful not to know how you are going to feed your family. So, thank you to all of you who have contributed towards our hampers for those families who are struggling in this way this Christmas, Covid has made the situation for a lot of our local families much worse as many were employed by the airline industry. Your gifts will help not only spread some joy this Christmas but let these families know that we do care and they are not forgotten.

This Sunday sees the following services at our churches:

9.30am Holy Communion St Margaret’s
10.30am Cafe church St John’s. This cafe church is particularly with children in mind so do bring them along. Mince pies will be served!

We also have our last church teas at Capel for the year on Sunday afternoon 3-5pm, we shall look forward to seeing you there. You will be pleased to hear that the dates for 2022 have just been printed so pick up a copy to add them to your 2022 diary.

Other events that will be having their last one before 2022 are the Crown’s final quiz night of 2021 on Tuesday 14th and the last Capel market on Saturday 18th.

We know that Christmas can be a difficult time for many, do get in touch if you would like to chat, we quite understand that not everyone feels they can come into church at the moment. For those who are coming to one of our Christmas services, we do request that you wear masks to protect others. We are now providing Holy Communion in both bread and wine. Consecrated wine will be served in individual glasses whilst we are still at risk from Covid.

Lastly, we have 3 photos this week, two very kindly given by Mike and Jane Reeves of their recent trip to Wisley to see their ‘Glow’ Festival of Lights – it certainly looks beautiful, I understand there are a few tickets still available for early January. The third is from one of my chilly walks this week on Leith Hill looking over Duke’s Warren.

With love and prayers
