weekly news sheet 30 May 2021

Dear Friends

At last the warmer weather has arrived. I’ve spent this week gardening and enjoying our daily walk without a coat!

We have a celebration service in Capel today (Saturday) for a couple who will be getting married in Alaska later, but are having a service of blessing here first. Joy, Betty and Helen Berry have done wonders with the flowers, do pop in and have a look. I’ve attached a picture of them as our photo of the week.

Tomorrow and Bank holiday Monday sees more of our church teas at Capel 3-5pm. These will be served outside as the weather is forecast looks to be lovely. We have a few plants for sale, and string bags to take them home in. Do feel free to bring any of your own plants that are excess to requirements (no tomatoes!), come and have a look, enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake. If you’ve had your second vaccine recently we can also laminate your vaccine card for you, this will keep it looking pristine just in case we are asked to show them in the future. I will be there both afternoons with our laminator and will happily do any that you bring – there is no charge for this.

There are more church teas at Capel on 13 June, and they will continue throughout the summer. If you feel you could give up an hour or two to help please sign the sheet on the table in church.

There is a new market starting next Saturday (5th June) in Capel every two weeks from 8.30am to 11.30am outside the Crown. There will be fruit, veg, cheeses, organic herbs and spices, dry groceries, meat, and dried fruit. The Crown will be open for coffee and cake on these mornings, so come and do your Saturday shopping locally!

Thank you to the two very generous donors who have added to the church path fund in Capel. The fund is now up to £1,087 (including gift aid), which is wonderful. We need approximately £10,000 to do all three paths – that is the path from the Lych gate to the church, the path from there to the south door (normally used by brides) and lastly, the path from the church through the churchyard to the burial ground. If anyone else would like to contribute, you can always give me a cheque made payable to Capel & Ockley PCC or pay by bank transfer into our account Sort code: 09-01-53 Account number: 89053287, please mark your donation with your name and ‘path’. Thank you.

I have also registered our PCC as a possible recipient of a £1,000 grant from Ecclesiastical’s ‘Movement for Good’ campaign. It would really help our cause if you would click on the link below and register your support. The link will take you to the right page, then just scroll down and click on’ nominate a charity now’. The next page will already have been populated with our charity number so it just needs you to fill in your personal details. Thank you. movementforgood.com/index.php?cn=1132153&ct=church
I attach the weekly sheets, this week’s readings and the bishops sermon which is this week given by Paul Davies the Archdeacon of Surrey, who looks at his attempts over the years to define what the trinity is. You can see the Youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjdxHt_rnWE&t=6s

A service for Trinity Sunday

Worship with us this Trinity Sunday. Led by Rev Rebecca Mathew, vicar of St Nicholas Church, Allestree and St Paul’s, Quarndon in the Diocese of Derby, our sermon from Rev Shemil Mathew, Chaplain for Oxford Brookes University, explores the way in which God is revealed to us as part of the Trinity and how we are reminded of our own relationships, communities and global networks.

Dear Friends

Having been nearly blown away yesterday, today seems to be quieter and I’m told we have much better weather coming.

Today’s sheets include the dates for our next church teas 30th & 31st May at Capel church from 3-5pm, please come and bring your friends. We will be outside and look forward to seeing you. The rest of the dates for Capel are attached and will be given out in church tomorrow. Ockley too are hoping to do teas for the first time, their dates will be ready shortly.

We have recently been awarded a small grant from Surrey Churches Preservation Trust to help us do the church paths in Capel. We have another applications in with the Surrey Fund and are looking for others that might support this project. In the meantime if you would like to make a donation please do reply to this email, the money will only be used for this purpose. It would be lovely to have a non-slip path to our church door and to resurface the paths going to the burial ground and the South door. We hope these improvements will make it a lot easier for those who are infirm to visit their loved ones graves.

I have attached the weekly sheets, readings, weekly sermon, and church tea dates to this email. Do let me know if there are any improvements you would like to see.

Lastly, the photo of the week a last picture of the bluebells in the woods near us – now fading but joined by beautiful fresh green spring grass

Dear Friends

A huge thank you to all of those who helped, or came along to our Teas for Trees at Capel church last weekend. Thankfully it didn’t rain, but the wind was quite strong – I was pleased to see the gazebos stayed in place. We raised £320 for TREEAID which will be doubled by the government. TREEAID tell me that £10 buys and plants one tree so you have just planted 64 trees to help the Great Green Wall, thank you.

As part of our plan to gradually return to normal, and after the success of last weekend’s teas we have decided that church teas are now back, at least for the summer. For the moment they will be served outside under gazebos and adhere to all Covid guidelines. Ockley will also be doing teas for the first time, so please do support us. The money from now on will go towards the costs of our churches and the services we provide. The next teas will be at Capel on 30 and 31 May 3-5pm. Fingers crossed for sunshine.

This week has seen the start of the National Church initiative ’Thy Kingdom Come’. This has been running since 2016 and takes place between Ascension and Pentecost. In fact nowadays it’s a global event and is treated as a special time to reflect and pray for people to move closer to God. This year for the first time there is also an app which is easily downloadable from your App Store. This not only has daily prayers but videos, reflections and bible readings. It also includes videos for children and teenagers. Do have a look at what’s available and learn more, the link is here:
www.thykingdomcome.global

This week’s sermon is given by Martin Breadmore the archdeacon of Dorking who uses the famous Peanuts cartoon characters to illustrate how much more we can do when we all work together. The transcript is attached and the video can be found here:

I know many of you are not yet in a position where you would like to return to physical church, so we will continue to record services for you to view via our website. We would, however, love to hear your thoughts on these services and what we can do keep in touch or help you transition back to ‘onsite’ church. Would you, for instance, like to see services at other times on a Sunday? Or would you like just to have the sermon and a couple of hymns recorded as a shortened version of the full service? How do we contact those who we haven’t seen for awhile and who maybe aren’t online? We have tried to drop hard copies of the weekly sheets to those we know don’t have good internet, but have probably missed some. Your thoughts would be really helpful, just reply to this email and I will make sure they are collated and shown to the PCC (anonymously if you prefer). We will also be sending out a questionnaire later in the summer as to what other things you would like to see your church doing or conversely not doing!

For now, the weekly sheets along with the readings and Martin’s sermon are attached. Photo of the week this week, a slightly muddy looking Four Wents Pond!

With love and prayers
