Notes for Sunday 23 July 2023

Dear friends,

Tomorrow is the first of two parish services in a row. We hope top see quite a few of you in St Margaret’s and if you do come, please consider buying at the new LOAF stall: organic, free trade coffee, tea, sugar, honey and biscuits and much more to aid the PCC’s efforts towards becoming carbon net zero.

Today’s pictures were taken on a walk from Parkgate. The first in a Capel field of a mushroom species I am not familiar with. The second of some very successful parents. One brood of 8 ducklings and another of 6 moorhens in a pond in Newdigate. I could not get them all in one picture and I have never seen such numbers of young ducks and moorhens in a single brood reach near-adulthood. It was lovely to waste some time watching them.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 16 August 2023

Dear friends,

As I write, I feel the need to check my diary because it looks a lot like autumn has arrived!
With our continental neighbours experiencing extreme heat we are bracing ourselves for rain, thunderstorms and wind gusts of over 45 mph. Quite a contrast with last weekend too.

The picture today was taken last Sunday in Wales: a small but feisty mother duck watching over her resting brood at the canal edge.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 9 July 2023

Dear friends,

This email is later than normal as I’m away to Wales. Our choir has taken part in the Eisteddfod in Llangollen on Saturday. We didn’t make it to the choir of the world competition on Saturday evening but I enjoyed singing in two classes on Saturday morning: very exciting!

Unfortunately, Rev Liz is struggling with a dental infection and can not take the service on Sunday. All are more than welcome to join in with Café church at 10:30 in the Crown at Capel. Coffee and croissants will be provided as well as thought for the day, beautiful music and much more.

The pictures today are from the fundraising event at the military show last weekend. A lot of effort by a lot of volunteers so let’s hope for a good result (a little birdie tells me that it’s likely to be more than last year!).

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 2 July 2023

Dear friends,

In haste because I am already late for my shift at the military show to serve church teas and cakes.

The picture today is of a fledged blackbird that is waiting to be fed by its parents: good luck and Godspeed little one!

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

July 2023 Garden Tips

Garden Notes for July 2023.

In order to keep the wonderful flowers going it is worth the trouble to go round and ‘dead-heading’ by taking out the flowers that have gone over. This will encourage new growth and keep a continuation of colour in your garden

July should be the time when everything starts catching up and roses will need feeding early on in the month, after they have finished their first flush. Outdoor chrysanthemums will also benefit from a feed, preferably one with a high potash level.

Multiply your strawberry plants by pegging down the runners, but only one plantlet per plant and remove the rest of the runner, if you want good new plants.

Fuchsias need a lot of water, don’t let them dry out too much. They will also benefit from a regular feed of a balanced fertiliser. Camellias need to be watered regularly and fed so that the emerging buds are sustained through autumn and winter.

Towards the middle of the month watch out for blight on your main crop potatoes. It used to be that you would spray them with a good fungicide designed for the job nowadays the principle is not to spray so if you can catch it early enough remove affected leaves as soon as possible. Early crops of new potatoes should be cleared away and the haulm disposed of to prevent spreading disease.

Any flower heads that appear on spring-sown parsley should be removed as soon as possible as they will prevent leaf production which is what you want.

Dahlias need to be disbudded if you want top quality blooms. Keep an eye on them and feed with a fertiliser, as they are very hungry feeders.

The best time for propagating many shrubs is at the back end of July. Cuttings of half ripened wood of shrubs like forsythia, ribes, escallonia and weigela can all be taken. Pull off the shoots with a heel of older wood, trim it neatly with a sharp knife and insert them into a box with sandy soil. Shade from bright sunshine, and next year you will have a whole lot more shrubs.

Do keep going with all your Show Day plants. Remember to look in your free Schedule to know what is required for the Judges to examine, and come along on Saturday 19th August for the best day of the year. Also do not forget that you have to register your entries by Wednesday 16 August.

Notes for Sunday 25 June 2023

Dear friends,

Firstly let me inform you that the website calendar stopped working this week. Dik apologises that unfortunately he can’t promise it will be working again before September as it needs thorough investigation.

Don’t forget to check the lists at the back of our churches to see if there are still cakes required for next week’s tea stall at the Capel military show and I’m sure Helen would love to hear from you if you can help over the weekend. One of the perks is free access to the show so maybe some friends or family members can be roped in on that promise?

The picture today is of some mushrooms in an area that only two months ago hosted a sea of bluebells.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Eco Cafe Church – 11 June, 2023 – If not now, then when?

Eco Café Church: Grab yourself a coffee and a Danish, but don’t get too comfortable!

Hear about Ocean acidification, Earth Overshoot and Climate justice. The food for thought is: how are you going to respond? Café Church from the Crown, Capel.

Notes for Sunday 18 June 2023

Dear friends,

We have been very spoilt with the weather: warm and sunny with balmy evenings to enjoy our gardens and water our plants. Our back garden is a haven for insects at the moment with the rose (second picture) alive with them feeding on pollen. It’s a shame I can not let you all experience the fragrance and the buzz. The main picture is of a bumblebee feeding in a foxglove flower.

Apart from the usual notes and readings, I have attached a list of links that may help you follow up on last week’s café church. Whether you are interested in checking your own carbon footprint, reading up on background information or just need some help with making day to day choices, there will be something there for you.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd
