Notes for Sunday 18 June 2023

Dear friends,

We have been very spoilt with the weather: warm and sunny with balmy evenings to enjoy our gardens and water our plants. Our back garden is a haven for insects at the moment with the rose (second picture) alive with them feeding on pollen. It’s a shame I can not let you all experience the fragrance and the buzz. The main picture is of a bumblebee feeding in a foxglove flower.

Apart from the usual notes and readings, I have attached a list of links that may help you follow up on last week’s café church. Whether you are interested in checking your own carbon footprint, reading up on background information or just need some help with making day to day choices, there will be something there for you.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 11 June 2023

Dear friends,

First and foremost, please be informed that there are changes to the service in Ockley this Sunday: contrary to previous notes, a Holy Communion service will be held at the normal time in St Margaret’s.

What beautiful weather it has been recently and it doesn’t look like changing any time soon. I enjoyed a wonderful walk this week to the north of Capel (see picture). The colours were beautiful and the air was full of birds and insects. Luckily we have had a very wet spring so the birds have been able to feed their young due to the relatively soft soil. Let’s hope that stems the tide of decline in numbers of our feathered friends for a while.

Attached is the menu for Eco cafe church. It promises to be an enlightening service so please come if you can. The theme is ‘If not now, then when?’

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 4 June 2023

Dear friends,

The June issue of Inspire is out and can be read or downloaded from the PCC website now:

InSpire Magazine – The Parish of Capel and Ockley (capelandockleychurch.org.uk)<www.capelandockleychurch.org.uk/inspire-magazine/>

If you follow this link you can sign up to automatically receive Inspire and Liz’s monthly letter via email as well as these weekly notes. More and more of you are doing this and we are very grateful for that! You can also pick up a paper copy of Inspire from one of our churches.

Attached word document explains how many people will be needed for our fundraising event at the Military show in Capel, the first weekend of July. Please read through and see if you could volunteer for one or two shifts. There are many different jobs, some public-facing, some behind the scenes and there is bound to be something you like.

The picture this week is of the church in Abergavenny. The rose covered wall had to be captured!

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

June 2023 Garden Tips

Garden Notes for June 2023.

There is so much to do in June. Keep lawns mowed, but do not set the blades too low as this allows the plants to survive if there is a lack of moisture. Lawns always look so much more tidy if the edges are kept cut as well as the centre.

In the vegetable plot, make sure potatoes are kept ridged up, otherwise the tubers get exposed and ruined. Late Savoy cabbage can be sown now – use a variety like ‘Ormskirk’. Winter cabbage like January King should be planted out now. Leeks should be planted out using a dibber to make a hole about 6 to 8” deep, and then water it in well.

Frost susceptible, fast growing plants like dahlias, courgettes and so on should be put into their final homes assuming that there is no ground frost forecast. If it has been very dry, make sure that they have a good drink before and after planting them out. But don’t water them all the time. Give the roots time to settle down and then water (if necessary, and allowed) about once a week with a thorough soaking, preferably in the evening or early morning before the sun has got its full power switch on.

Continue to make successional sowings of lettuce. Ones like ‘Tom Thumb’ ‘Little Gem’ and ‘Mini Green’ are fast growing, and the right size for many people. Webbs Wonderful is superb but rather large.

Early tomatoes should be ripening fast and the fruits should be picked regularly.

Roses are at their best towards the end of the month. It helps to keep them cut regularly and feed with a potash feed to keep them blooming longer. If you want to have specimen blooms it is advised to carefully take out the side shoots and smaller buds, leaving just one strong one at the end of the stem. Keep an eye out for pests and disease. Keep mildew at bay by regular spraying.

Suckers that sprout up from the base of damson and plum trees can become troublesome unless dealt with early on, so dig them out and burn the resulting twigs.

As alpine plants finish flowering, trim them back to keep the plants neat and compact. It will also encourage them to make good growth for next spring. Any gaps or vacant spots in the rock garden can be planted with summer flowering annuals or bedding plants to maintain the overall colour. Towards the end of the month cuttings can be taken from the alpine stock to increase the number of plants. Root the cuttings in a sandy compost.

Don’t forget to keep all your prize exhibits growing well for the Capel Horticultural Society
Summer Show which will be held on Saturday 19 th August.

Notes for Sunday 28 May 2023

Dear friends,

The pictures today are all about crimson clover. I had not come across these pretty plants before last week. These pictures were taken last Tuesday on my walk home from Newdigate.

Unfortunately I will not be able to run the LOAF food stall tomorrow after the service as I have a chest infection and am running a temperature. Look for me at the next cafe church on June 11th in the Crown.

Lastly, I am very pleased to say that half of those who receive this email are now signed up to receive it via our website. If you haven’t got round to doing this, please look at the instructions below. It really makes the life of yours truly much simpler if you do.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 21 May 2023

Dear friends,

This morning, when digging some well-rotted manure from our muck heap to feed the roses, I first unearthed what I thought was a huge earth worm. Closer inspection revealed it was a smallish slow worm, probably a young one. Shortly after I came across some leathery egg shells, most likely from a grass snake. They were empty so probably last year’s but still a very exciting find. A Facebook friend remarked that I had a reptilian morning.

May I remind you that next Sunday 28/5 will be the launch of our LOAF stall, with fair trade organic biscuits with our after-service coffee to give you a flavour of what will be on sale. Most of the offerings will be both Organic and Fair Trade. There will be coffee, several teas, sugar, honey, biscuits, cocoa and more.

Lastly, please sign up for baking cakes and serving at the Military show the first weekend of July and also consider helping at the salad wrap stall at our very own Capel Show on 19 August. Both are tremendous fundraising occasions for our churches and an opportunity to be visible in the local community.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 14 May 2023

Dear friends,

The weather hasn’t been very sunny and the mushrooms feel distinctly out of season. Luckily the rose offers much needed compensation and cheers me up no end. Let’s just hope that last year’s empty reservoirs get a good top-up!

Tomorrow’s cafe church in the Crown has a theme of Christian Aid. If you are planning to come, our coffee offering will be more like a continental breakfast. We hope that many of you will come and make a generous donation to Christian Aid for a generous offering of assorted fresh pastries, home-made bread with jam and honey (some for sale too!), fruit and other delights.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 7 May 2023

Dear friends,

As I write this email, the coronation is not far away and there is a steady drizzle but I am sure that the damp weather will not dampen the festivities all over the land.

Our villages are decked in flags and bunting and tomorrow looks to be a fun-filled day in Ockley on the Green with teas provided throughout the day by St Margaret’s folk. In Capel the flower festival in Aid of Scott Boadwood pre-school will be worth visiting all weekend with teas provided. Look in the notes for opening times.
Yesterday’s Capel ‘s got talent was a roaring success and Beatrice, who won the competition, received many accolades and a standing ovation for her moving performance.

Next Sunday is the start of Christian Aid week and Cafe church, at the Crown, will see a more elaborate breakfast with lovely pastries and we hope that many of you will come to enjoy what’s on offer and donate for this good cause.

I have attached the lectionary readings but please note that these will not be used in the coronation services. The picture today had to be of bluebells. They are in their full glory now so please use some of this long weekend to enjoy them. They are everywhere.

God bless

Dineke van den Bogerd

Notes for Sunday 30 April 2023

Dear friends,

It’s finally starting to warm up. The cold spring has meant a prolonged flower display and it has been wonderful to see the long season of flowering blackthorn, daffodils and other spring flowers. Don’t forget to go on a bluebell walk this week. The display has just started and it is glorious. Mike Reeves sent in a couple of photo’s he took on a visit to RHS Wisley. Many thanks Mike for attached tulips.

We are now getting very close to the coronation weekend and I hope you can fit in a visit to St John’s flower festival. The opening times are in the notes and Joy and team will be serving tea, coffee and cakes throughout. All donations will go to Scott Broadwood, our great little pre-school.

It is now possible to sign up for regular giving to your church online:
Give to your parish – Parish Giving Scheme<www.parishgiving.org.uk/donors/find-your-parish/?keyword=RH5+5HP&parishName=&distance=1&registeredOnly=>
Please consider this (if you haven’t already signed up) as it makes our treasurer’s life infinitely easier to receive regular donations this way: PGS sorts out all the Gift Aid for those who have signed up for that option and all regular income comes in one report. You stay in control though and any changes (frequency, increases, decreases, opt out of Gift Aid or cancellation) are easy to sort out yourself online or by phone. Any amount helps the financial planning of our parish.
We still have packs for those who prefer to fill out a form. Just send me an email or ask someone when you are in church next time.

A reminder: please consider signing up to receive the weekly notes (and Liz’s letter and Inspire!) via the website. 30% of subscribers have done so in the last year and I am considering adding some additional features that can only be viewed when signed up this way. See below how to subscribe.

God bless,

Dineke van den Bogerd
