Weekly notes for Sunday 11 September 2022

Dear friends,

My apologies for re-sending this info but due to a hiccup I cannot be sure that my previous email reached all of you.

As promised I send you the notes for this week. Also attached are the revised readings and prayers for the services of commemoration in our churches tomorrow morning.

The choral evensong will go ahead in St Peter’s, Newdigate and I hope you are looking forward to joining.

Lastly I would draw your attention to the murder mystery night. Places can be booked up to and including next Saturday, the 17th. You will not receive a ticket but rest assured your place will be secure once you have booked. Yvonne, the cast and the caterers have worked hard to give us two evenings of entertainment in aid of our church funds and they deserve our support.
If you could help by donating worthwhile raffle prizes that would be highly appreciated. Please contact Jessie or Helen before the night if you do.

Blessings,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Her Late Majesty Elizabeth II

Dear friends,

Never had I imagined that my first message to you would be of such sadness: the country has lost a great monarch.

In this period of mourning each service on Sunday morning will be one of commemoration.
Cafe church in The Crown has been cancelled and the service in Capel will be held at 10:30h in St John the Baptist.
Ockley St Margaret’s will have a service of Holy Communion during the period of mourning at 09:30h

There will also be a Service of Prayer and Reflection remembering her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Details of this will be issued in due course. The weekly notes were ready for print but had to be altered. I will send them to you as soon as I receive them from our vicar.

The Church of England is encouraging online condolences which can be found on the Church of England website www.churchofengland.org. The link to submit your message of condolence is found on the home page. There is also an online ‘Light a candle for Her Majesty The Queen’ on the same page.
Importantly both churches will be open all day for quiet prayer and reflection, if wished flowers can be laid and candles lit. There will be books of condolence for those who have no access to the online condolences register.

We must remember the Royal family and pray that they find solace in their grief and comfort in each other. Let us pray that King Charles can find his own way to bring together country and family, guided by his creator.

Blessings,

Dineke van den Bogerd

Dear friends,

Please find here your post-Debbie weekly news sheet. Things have changed a bit since I edited the notes in the past and this week there has been no email distribution of the notes. The aim is to get that sorted for next week. Have a good Sunday rest.
God bless,

Dineke

September 2022 Garden Tips

Garden Notes for September 2022.

As John Keats so famously wrote about autumn being the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness/ close bosom-friend of the maturing sun”, September sees the time when crops are usually harvested and stored for the winter months that are to come. As I write this in August when it is heartbreakingly dry and far too hot I can only hope that the rain will come again. Under normal circumstances carrots should be lifted and stored before the roots start to split, which they will do very quickly once the heavy autumn rains begin. For the same reason, beetroot are better lifted and stored this month. Looking forward to next year, spring cabbage should be planted now. Remember to firm the soil around each plant after planting. Lettuce can also be sown now in a cold frame, or greenhouse. Varieties to choose include ‘Winter Density’, ‘All the Year Round’ and ‘May Queen’.

The exceptional heat and lack of any rain this summer will mean that the idea of watering plants is always a going to be discussed. It is either too dry like now, or it’s too wet as in past summers. The essential thing is to try to get the right balance. When it is dry the closable leaf pores on plants (technically called ‘stomata’) shut down and slow down the process of photosynthesis. When there is enough water the stomata open, transpiration takes place, allowing the air containing carbon dioxide to go into the plant, which, together with sunlight, powers the reaction of water and carbon dioxide to make the sugars that are the plant’s energy source and building blocks. Watering keeps the stomata open in dry spells. As a rule of thumb one square metre of vegetation draws the equivalent of an inch of rainfall every day. Growth of plants in the summer normally requires additional irrigation. There are now numerous automatic systems that can be put in – especially for containers and hanging baskets.

The start of autumn means that many plants are producing seed heads, which we normally ‘dead head’ to keep the succession of flowers going. With the cost of seed increasing year on year (the average cost is now over £3 per packet, and can be a lot more) it might be worthwhile considering saving some seed head for sowing. Flowers like Sweet William, Love-in-Mist (Nigella), Cosmos, or vegetables like Runner Beans, can be harvested just before the seed-pod has fully dried. Use brown paper bags to hang the seed head upside down and store in a dry place. Remember to label the variety, and then when it is all nice and brown shake out the seed and you have saved yourself pounds for a few minutes work. Unfortunately the lovely hybrids that abound now will not breed true and you will have to rely on the expertise of the professional for that, but if you don’t mind a variety of colour in your Sweet William and so on it is fine. One tip is to look out for Garden Centres having a seed sale, there are bargains to be had, with cuts up to 75%, when they are sufficiently desperate to make room for the new stock.

The growth of rampant climbers like some of the clematis (remember to check) wisteria and climbing roses can be cut back in the middle of September.

Regards
Chris

Weekly news sheet for Sunday 28 August 2022

Dear friends,

This is my last email to you all, I have really enjoyed putting the weekly sheets together each week, but am delighted that Dineke has agreed to take over – thank you Dineke.

We move next week so as you can imagine much of this week has been spent cleaning and tidying, however I have found time most days to walk in our lovely countryside which looks particularly beautiful now it has had a bit of rain. I even spent a wonderful walk with a close friend on Ranmore getting soaked, somehow the rain added to the beauty of the area. I’m trying to walk my favourite walks so not only have I been to Ranmore, but have done my favourite loop on Denbies, walked from Betchorth to Brockham and back along the river, walked the 5k circular walk on Holmwood and today we have walked from the Volunteer in Holmbury St Mary over to Abinger, then up to Abinger Roughs and back via Paddington Farm. Many of you will know these walks well, I have walked all of them countless times over the 25 years we have been here, and yet I never tire of the changing beauty of all. There are so many more favourites to do, that I shan’t manage them all before we leave – so we will have to return!

This week we have a joint service at Capel at 10.30am tomorrow with Rev Martin Gilpin presiding – thank you Martin for giving up your time to come and take our service.

We also have church teas at Capel on both Sunday and Monday (bank holiday) this week. Please do come along and sample Joy’s wonderful cakes, there are always others to have a chat with.

Photo of the week this week – my favourite bench on Leith Hill – the recent scrub clearing means that it now has the most stunning views, and the heather has just flowered.

Thank you again for all your cards, emails, and kind gifts, my apologies that I haven’t been able to write to you all personally, but will try to do so once we are settled in our new home. I’m sure you all recognise that this is a very special community and I have been privileged to be part of it.

With love and prayers

Harvest thoughts

Revd Liz Richardson

September and our thoughts here at church turn to Harvest. Both of our churches will be holding special Harvest services. St Margaret’s traditionally hold theirs at the end of September and then St John the Baptist follow at Capel the following week, the first Sunday in October. It is a wonderful time of the year isn’t it and our churches certainly always look splendid festooned with harvest flowers and of course the harvest gifts so generously donated by many of you. We also have another one of our very popular murder mystery plays and suppers returning to both Ockley and to Capel this year. Following a break of at least a couple of years we have a stellar cast for you and the drama this year is set in the world of fashion. ‘Murder on the Catwalk’ written by Janet Smith will once again be a murder mystery to be solved by our audiences and I understand that there will be a sense of secrecy as in that long running play ‘The Mousetrap’ as to who did it!! An excellent two course supper will be included in your ticket so do book early as places are limited. Details for booking are elsewhere in this magazine but I can tell you performances are on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th September.

For those who would prefer a slightly more genteel approach to Harvest we are looking forward to a ploughman’s harvest lunch at St Margaret’s on Sunday 25th September. The traditional Harvest teas will then be at Capel on Sunday 2nd October. We will once again be looking to collect donations of appropriate foodstuffs for Dorking Foodbank and Leatherhead Start so if you would like to contribute please leave your donations inside church clearly marked that it is for Harvest. We will also be taking a monetary collection at both Harvest services to assist those in need at home or abroad. More details will be available shortly.

September is one of those times of new beginnings isn’t it. Lots of young people will be making new starts as they return to or start new schools or colleges and many leaving home to continue their education. We will be praying for them and also for others we know who are moving away to other parts of the country. Someone who we have had to say farewell to is one of our wonderful Treasurers, Debbie von Bergen, as she and Hugh move westwards. Debbie took on the role of Hon Treasurer a few years ago which is a big enough job for anyone these days but has also given her commitment and dedication to everything that we as a parish have been involved in in recent years. As someone noted recently ‘not many people are irreplaceable but Debbie is a pretty good contender on that one’! I personally shall miss them both and thank them both for their presence and wisdom in all they have been involved with, in and for our church and community. We send them off with all God’s blessings as they begin this new chapter in their lives.

With all love and prayers

Revd Liz

Weekly news for Sunday 14 August 2022

Dear friends,

First may I say an enormous thank you for all your kind contributions to the wonderful presents I received last Sunday. I was completely overwhelmed by your generosity and love the picture of Capel Church which will have a special place in our new house. The Sarah Raven vouchers will help us create our new garden which I will start working on this Autumn and winter. I have loved being part of this community and will miss you all enormously, but I have many happy memories to look back on, especially attending both the weekly and monthly bible groups, helping at the vicarage fete, Christmas Fair and military show and of course singing all those wonderful hymns in church.

We’re here for a couple more weeks but do leave the village on 1 September, so this is one last appeal for someone to do the weekly sheets. The preparation takes about an hour of my time and the printing and collating a second hour. The sheets are pre-printed with the readings so it is just the notices that need updating each week. If you don’t have a printer I think Rev Liz would be able to print them for you on her new very fast laser printer, but you do need to be able to use ‘Word’ in order to compile them. Do let me know if you would like to give it a try.

This weeks services are:
9.30am Matins at Ockley taken by Graham Everness
10.30am Cafe church at The Crown, Capel – led by Claire Robins
Rev Liz is away on holiday until 4 September so if you have any queries please ask your church wardens.

Next Saturday sees the return of the much loved Capel Show 12-5pm at Capel recreation ground. This show combines the classic car show and the Horticultural show – so you get two for the price of one!! Do remember that the proceeds from this event go to village societies and charities including the church. I hope to see you there.

The photo of the week this week is my favourite bench on Holmwood common, which is lovely and cool under the tree canopy. Talking of cool places, may I suggest if you are feeling hot to take refuge in one of our lovely churches, they are beautifully cool in this hot weather.

With love and prayers
