Local Library Service

As long time residents of Capel, we have subscribed to the excellent village magazine but have never contributed to it. I have this month joined the library Direct volunteer service and the coordinator for the scheme asked if we could disseminate information about the book service to all residents, in particular sick or less mobile residents. The scheme is free and offers more than just delivering books. I hope you will find room in your magazine for the attached article.

Beryl Sinclair

“There are many people across Surrey, who are denied access to the wonderful worlds books create; people who can’t get to a library through no fault of their own. To combat this, Surrey County Council Libraries provide a brilliant free service called Library Direct, which is open to any resident in surrey, of any age, who has difficulty in getting to a library due to ill health, disability, mobility problems or caring responsibilities. Library Direct is currently made up of two main services, which are our Library Direct Friends & family service and our Library Direct Home service.

The Library Direct Home Service brings the library to you with the help of our dedicated volunteers. Library Direct proves a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked volunteer to select and deliver books direct to your door.

If you have a relative, neighbour or friend, who can borrow books for you then Library Direct Friends & Family is perfect. A specialist library card is provided to your friend or family member, allowing them to take books out on your behalf.

Both services provide our members with additional benefits such as extended loan periods and amount as well as no charges or fees. To find out more about Library Direct or to join one of the above mentioned services please contact Enquiries Direct on 01483 543599/ libraries @surrey.cc.gov.uk or see our website www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries for more details.”

Help Build The Wall

Some of you will have seen that the wall surrounding the churchyard has developed some gaps. The whole wall is in need of re-pointing but most urgently we need to do repairs to ensure safety of all those who go near the wall.

A rough estimate of the money required is £!5,000 and the Friends cannot assist as they deal with the church building only. The parish council has offered some help with the wall to the west, where it borders the council burial ground but we will have to raise a lot of money to complete this work. Fund raising ideas have materialised and next month we will reveal some of the worked out ideas.

In the meantime donations towards the cause are very welcome.

Capel Parish Notes For June

Public Meeting at 7pm on 22nd June: The Neighbourhood Development Plan is now progressing towards the formal community consultation which is planed for the end of june. A hard copy of the draft plan will be sent to all householders in the Parish for a 6-week consultation. The plan will also be available online. The Steering Group and Parish Council recognise that this will form an important part of the process leading up to the formal submission of the plan to Mole Valley District Council and a subsequent submission to The Planning Inspectorate prior to a referendum later in the year. To ensure everyone understands the content of the draft plan and how to respond, a public meeting will take place at Capel Memorial Hall on Wednesday 22nd June starting at 7pm. The plan will be explained with the aid of a Power Point presentation and copies of the response form will be provided as a guide in advance of the publication of the draft plan. The purpose of the meeting will be to explain the draft plan but not to debate its content at that stage.

Ongoing complaints about dog mess on Capel Recreation Ground are receiving weekly. It is nasty stuff to get on your shoes and it can be dangerous to children. Anyone walking their dog and not carrying a bag to pick up their dog’s mess can be fined on the spot. If you walk your dog in the dark, please take a torch so you can clear up the mess. CCTV cameras are being sourced currently in response to vandalism of structures on the Recreation Ground and other illegal activities.

If you have any problems with aircraft noise from the new Gatwick flight path you may register your complaint during the current 6-month consultation period by emailing Gatwick Airport. noise.line@gatwickairport.com or calling Freephone 0800 393 070.

Capel Vicarage Fete 2016

In aid of our local schools.

Saturday 26th June 2016: 12 -3pm @ The Vicarage, 54 The Street

It seems that Summer is almost here and where would be without our annual Vicarage Fete – part of the social scene, nestling inconspicuously between Wimbledon and Goodwood – and an opportunity to enjoy ourselves and support our local schools, especially through these difficult times. there will be the well-tried and practiced format with many old favourites and no doubt some new ones – including a “Knobbly Knees” Competition – so come along and sample the wares – great entertainment – culinary delights – great BBQ – fantastic Teas and a chance to buy or better still win those great little treasurers.

The dress theme for this year is “Teddy Bears” (very appropriate_ for both kids (and adults like!) so delve deep into your wardrobes and drawers and unearth those extravaganzas you have been saving all these years for this Royal Occasion!

They of course need o “attract” some of the produce to create and supplement this major production – this includes quality items of: Bottles – Books – CDs – Videos – Cakes – White Elephants! – in fact anything that you may not need but feel sure it would enhance someone else.

You can deposit any “gifts” at Scott Broadwood School, Capel – 01306 711181 or speak to Sarah Pusey 711692. Cakes to The Vicarage on the Saturday morning (before mid-day). Please continue to buy those Raffle Tickets – this is a very important part of the fund raising and affords you a better chance than the lottery!

Remember all monies go the Schools, Scott Broadwood, The Weald & Capel Pre-School.

Hope you see you there.

Sue Silliman

The family of Sue Silliman would like to thank their friends and neighbours in Capel for the support and friendship shown to us during Sue’s illness and recent sad death. Your kindness has been very appreciation. Sue was very happy to be a resident of such a great village for the past eight years. Thank you.

David, Cathy and Kyle Silliman.

Tom dale

After a long battle against the odds, Thomas Trezise Dale died on 27th April 2016, aged 92 achieving the 60th anniversary of getting married to Jean.

The service of Thanksgiving for his life took place at St. John the Baptist Church, Capel on Friday 20th May. The service, led by the Rev Liz Richardson was well attended by all Tom’s family and friends who came to remember him. At the internment, one of the huntsmen blew ‘Gone Away’ in his memory of all the support he had given the Surrey Union over the years. After the service many people went to Tom’s Wake in the Memorial Hall where the Capel WI had put on a magnificent ‘tea’ although it was more like a banquet with wonderful sandwiches, scones, fruit cake and meringues and tea brewed on the Stage because the power in the kitchen was not available!

Tom’s life was rooted and grounded in Aldhurst Farm, but he was a great supporter of the Surrey Union Hunt, riding to hounds when he could and a long term Committee member. Not surprisingly, he was also a member of the National Farmers Union and Chairman of the local Committee for several years. He was a founding member of the Capel Fire Brigade that did sterling work during the war years, and he only left when it was disbanded.

Jean and Christopher would like to thank all their neighbours and friends for the many cards and offers of help following the passing of Tom.

The Evergreens – Trip Along The South Coast

On 14th March we had our first outing of the year, which was a trip along the South Coast. We started at Brighton continued along to Worthing, where we had lunch at a Garden Centre and with an hour or so looking around. we then continued onto Arundel for a “cuppa” before heading for home.

We have just arrived back from our holiday in Ireland exhausted from early mornings and late nights but have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were taught how to pull a pint of Guinness, make an Irish Baileys Coffee and also make Irish Soda Bread and were entertained wth wonderful Irish Dancing.

We had some lovely trips round the Island visiting Dublin, Kilkenny and the Waterford Glass Factory. Altogether a great holiday.

Capel Parish Council Notes For May

Good news for everyone in Capel who uses the pub and has been concerned about its future. The Area Manager has confirmed that the pub will be closing for refurbishment the second week of July and will open again some time in August. The work will involve a new kitchen and improvements both inside and outside, including the garden area. When it reopens there will be a full food menu and full offering of ales and drinks. The pub is being taken into the fully managed estate of punch Taverns and a new Manager will be running the pub when it reopens.

The Parish Council is currently investigating the possibility of installing a CCTV camera at Capel playground which was set on fire recently for the second time. It is very expensive to repair the safety surface and although insurance covers most of the cost there is still an excess to pay from Parish funds.

Traffic aiming is still on the agenda and professional advice is currently under consideration to help the Parish Council decide what can be done to make the roads safer in the villages.
