Capel Classics 2014

This year’s show was tinged with sadness as The Friends’ long standing treasurer, Mike Baty, died a few days before. Mike has always been an integral part in the success of the Show, usually in the background collecting the money on his bike – and there is much around on the day – banking it and looking after all the accounts. He will be much missed, not only as a good man but as a tireless and happy worker and an integral part of the community.

On the day the forecast got ir right, light winds with sunshine and the occasional cloud ensured a perfect recipe for a grand day out.

The continuing combination of Fruit and Veg and Cars and Bikes and numerous other stalls is always a great mix and a unique attraction for all the people and their families and more than 3000 seemed to agree.

More than 620 Cars and Bikes and other various varieties of motorised vehicles also agreed. Military and Commercial – Vintage and Veteran – Big and Small – Car Clubs and Bike clubs – in fact classics of all descriptions and all ages, navigated their way along the A24 into Capel and such was the attraction the many unregistered who came late had to be turned away.

This year’s combined Car and Bike marque was based on country. Names like Ferrari/ Maserati/ Fiat/ Alfa Romeo / Lamborghini mixed with Ducati/ Moto Guzzi/ Laverda and other intoxica brought Italy to Surrey!

Brisk trade was evident throughout the many commercial outlets on the field, and especially the pizzas. Added to all this was the Capel Talent Show on Saturday evening and the Music Festival throughout Sunday. Where else could you get a community so united and well organised.

So ends another fantastic Capel Weekend? Huge thanks must go to the many people who set it all up and on the days, helped control the crowds and the roads, car parks, registrations, layouts etc… and then (just as importantly) took it all down and cleared it all up afterwards (always impressive). So a huge THANK YOU to YOU ALL.

Two specific “THANK YOU’S” without whose involvement nothing could or would have happened. Bill Turner – for the use of his field for parking the ever-increasing public requirement. Capel Parish Council for all the work they do throughout the year and especially for ensuring that the Recreational Field is not only available but also in prime condition to act as a suitable “Showcase”.

Will we do it all again next year? After the success of this year and reflecting on our heritage – thanks Mike – then how can we not, so keep 15/16th August 2015 free just in case!

PS – a retiring collection was held for Cancer Research and raised £412 – enough said!
