Capel Horticultural Society – Annual Allotment Competition

So, just how is your allotment looking? Well, there is plenty of time to spruce it up for the annual allotment competition. Judging on general cleanliness and cultivations will take place, by an independent judge, at both sites (Recreation Ground and Temple Lane) on Sunday 10th July. The Horticultural society has two cups to award to the best maintained allotments. these will be presented at the Annual Show on August 20th. good luck to all keen Capel allotment keepers!

A reminder that Capel Horticultural Society is an affiliated member of the Royal Horticultural Society and takes part in the RHS Gardens reduced Price Entry Card scheme. this allows one member of the Capel Horticultural Society and one adult guest a 30% reduction on entrance to the RHS Gardens at Wisley (but does not apply on Sundays). If members wish to make use of this facility please contact Jackie Coke tel. 01306 711098.

Temple Lane Allotments Society

We  aim to grow  crops in an environmentally friendly way and become self sufficient as far as possible. We  share plants, seeds, knowledge  and experience with  each other  and we try  to preserve horticultural skills learned from  previous generations while experimenting with  new growing  methods. Temple Lane Allotments Society came into existence when farmers John and Johnny Dale at Aldhurst Farm generously offered  the use of part of a field in Temple Lane for community allotments.   By May

20 I0 the Society was formed,  the site had been mark,=d off into  separate plots and planting began. The

site has been fully fenced and a water  supply provided.   There is a basic loo, a community shelter and a car parking area.

In 2012 the Society introduced a site management system to ensure full cultivation of the site during

the main growing  season.  If allotment  holders  are unable to maintain proper cultivation,  they will be offered help for temporary problems.   However, plots will be reallocated  if necessary. Meetings and working parties are held regularly  throughout the year, including summer barbecues and socials.

Future plans include developing the site to a good standard, which will enable us to hold open days for families and children.

We  have an active team, to take forward the official part, and organise things like projects  and working parties – aiming to keep everyone  informed, consulted and involved.

We  welcome  new members and anyone over the age of 16 may apply for an allotment.

Allotments in Capel

There are allotments available at Temple Lane and also on Capel Recreation ground – ‘the Rec’. It may seem odd asking now, but starting on an allotment in autumn, means you can prepare the ground for a good start in Spring, so you can be ahead of the game.

If you are interested in an allotment of your own, please apply to the Parish Council (01306 712447) for on the Rec or to Viv Taylor for the Temple Lane Allotments.

Phil Partridge.

Capel Recreation Ground Allotments

Each of the full sized allotments is to be split into three with a third being equivalent to approximately 42 square metres and tenancies will be calculated for thirds in order to make them more easily managed. To keep the whole of the allotments area tidy the Parish Council is to take responsibility for mowing all the paths bordering the allotments.

A 10ft steel gate has been erected in the southern fence to allow for vehicular access for delivery of compost and to allow for this the area has been levelled and a more substantial surface will be laid. The eastern boundary fence will be replaced with a plastic coated chain link fence and the whole place smartened up.

We do hope that allotment holders will be encouraged to keep their allotments looking cared for and productive and that they will grow produce to show in the Capel Flower Show in August.

There are now several allotments available for rental and the new tenancy agreements will be sent out at the beginning of april. Please contact Jackie Coke 01306-712447.

Allotments Available

It may seem dark and cold, but now is the time to be planning the 2014 growing season, and planting early-starters indoors.

At Temple Lane we have medium and small allotment plots available. If you are interested in space to grow, do contact me please, and/or come along to the Temple Lane Allotments on Tuesday 14th January, at the Crown, Capel.

We’ll do a quick AGM and ‘Team’ update/voting from 7:30, and from 8:30 take subscriptions for 2014 and have a social – minding our peas and queues, of course.

Happy New Year!
