The Parish Council has responded to the Draft Surrey Transport Plan Cycling Strategy 2014 – 2026 – it is understood that the results of this consultation will be published in December. The only additional information we have at the time of writing is that instead of the road closures inflicted for the Prudential RideLondon 2013, for the 2014 race there will be rolling road closures where the roads are opened at intervals to let the traffic through so avoiding some of the anguish of residents who have been unable to leave their homes for up to twelve hours over the race duration. It is hoped that SCC will also attempt to address all the problems arising from the ever increasing number of unregulated cycle races, ‘sportives’, which seem to be on going over weekends and weekdays.

The Vachery Triathlon is the first of this summer’s cycle races, being staged on Sunday 21st July. It is a commercial event rather than an Olympic Legacy race. Many people complained about the number and length of the proposed road closures and as a result these have been dramatically reduced but there will still be some roads with restricted access – these will be re-opened by 2:00pm. Detailed maps of the routes are available at www.gosurrey.info and the organisers have said they will be doing a mail drop to domestic and business premises in the area by July 1st 2013.
The prudential Ride London cycle race takes place through the county on Sunday August 4th when roads will close in the early hours of the morning and will stay closed until early evening – similar to last year’s Olympic race.
The tour of Britain returns on Saturday 21st September when Surrey will host the penultimate stage. Some of the world’s best cyclists will start the race in Epsom and will head through Leatherhead, Dorking, Cranleigh, Woking, Elstead and Farnham. There will be a re-run of the sprint up Guildford High Street to the finish. This will only involve rolling road closures.
