weekly news sheet 20 June 2021

Dear Friends,

What a glorious week we’ve had! That is until the rain on Thursday and Friday, which has certainly replenished our gardens. A spent a delightful day on Wednesday visiting some friends who look after our old pony in Kent. It’s the first time I’ve managed to see them and her since last year. She’s 29 now and no longer ridden, but apart from a touch of arthritis is still going strong. She acts as nanny to my friend’s foal, who has worked out that she’ll do pretty much anything for a quiet life – so long as the foal doesn’t try and take her food! There are parallels with us grandparents who help look after our grandchildren!

This Sunday Graham Everness is filling in for Rev Liz who is away on holiday. He will be at both the 9.30 service at Ockley and the 10.30 at Capel. A huge thank you on behalf of all of us Graham, for being prepared to come and take services, particularly whilst we are still under COVID restrictions. Next Sunday Martin Gilpin will be preaching and giving Holy Communion at Capel and Ockley will have Matins led by their church wardening team.

I attach the readings and weekly sheet for this week along with the bishop’s sermon, this week given by Peter Harwood. The link to see the video is here:

Please note that due to the Prime Minister’s announcement this week the Pavilion Cafe in Ockley now hopes to restart on 21 July not 30 June as previously advertised. Some of the hard copies of the weekly sheets show the earlier date, but the one attached to this email is correct.

Lastly, the photo of the week is from the Friday Street NT carpark – a favourite view of mine showing the myriad of trees up against a stunning blue sky.

With love and prayers

Keeping it simple

Revd Liz Richardson

It may only be in rural or semi rural churches that the bride to be arrives in full wedding regalia astride her horse. This delightful event was the first of our ‘wedding type’ services in Capel this year. I say ‘wedding type’ as it was a service of blessing for a couple who are to be married abroad later this year. Our beautiful bride rode her horse who was resplendent in bridal rosettes woven into her mane from the Village Hall to the Lych Gate, swiftly dismounting to change her shoes, adjust her dress and off she strode to join her fiancee, family and friends waiting for her inside church. It was a very special occasion and one which we were pleased to be able to do for a local family who celebrated afterwards with a fabulous reception back at the village hall. Meanwhile over at St Margarets in Ockley we had our first proper wedding of the year. Not having officiated at a wedding since 2019 it was another great way of getting back into the wedding season so to speak. This was rather a special day as the bride and groom were two of our Ockley bellringers. In fact the groom had proposed to the bride during bell ringing practice with champagne waiting round the pillar! On the happy day the bride and groom wore 1940’s vintage clothes, arriving this time not by horse but in a vintage MG and greeted awaiting friends and family in the churchyard before the service. The groom even found time to ring the bells before he took his marriage vows! We still cannot sing inside in church but this didn’t stop the music as two amazing musicians Jon and Magda played ‘Pelagia’s song’ on the mandolin as the bride and groom strode down the aisle! As numbers were still restricted for receptions at that point, instead we all enjoyed champagne and cake outside church afterwards. My favourite food!!

It just goes to show that despite restrictions and complications celebrations can still take place and can be used to provide an experience that we might not otherwise have had! Both services, the Service of Blessing at Capel and the Wedding at Ockley had to be resourceful, flexible, and simple. Both occasions (I think) were free of some of the stress that surrounds the culture of micro managed celebrations where if something goes wrong, which it inevitably can, it can appear a disaster. I’m sure we have all been there in one form or another! The other thing of course is that we have to be as flexible as church, as much as we can within certain legalities of course! You can be assured that your village churches try their very best to help with pastoral services and other occasions as much as we can. This of course applies to the funeral services we are privileged to assist with in Capel and Ockley and sadly in the last few weeks we have had to say farewell to some well known local friends this time in Capel. Once again restrictions have meant flexibility but with some very talented family members we have witnessed some very beautiful musical moments amidst the amazing courage and inspiration of those who are grieving. It is incredible how everything comes together and in my view is such authentic worship to present to God. Although if you read the poem below you will find that he is very gracious! With authenticity and simplicity in mind then, here is the beautiful poem which I first heard read at our June Cafe Church. It describes the true simplicity of praying to our Maker and I hope you find it useful.
With my love and prayers as ever
Liz

Just talk to me

Don’t be afraid if you don’t understand
Don’t fear you won’t do it right
Don’t worry about performing
Just talk to me

Don’t need to wait until you’re hopeless
Don’t need a special voice you keep reserved just for me
Don’t even have to close your eyes
Just talk to me

Don’t worry that you don’t love me enough
Don’t need to do anything special
Don’t pretend you’re someone or something that you’re not
Just talk to me

Don’t try to be impressive
Don’t think about your image
Don’t need to be self-conscious
Just talk to me

Don’t think it has to make sense
Don’t feel the need to use complete sentences
Don’t feel the need to use words at all
Just talk to me

Don’t pretend to be happy if you are not
Don’t be overwhelmed if you feel hopeless
Don’t worry if I’ll do what you ask
Just talk to me

Don’t worry if you’re pleasing me
Don’t think you have to have all the answers
Don’t try to feel anything different at all
Just talk to me

Don’t bother about the rules
Don’t bother about whether there are any
Don’t pursue anything by which to measure yourself
Just talk to me

Don’t try to impress me
Don’t try to hide anything
Don’t concern yourself about whether you’re wasting my time with trivialities
Just talk to me

Don’t think anything is too insignificant to bring up
Don’t worry if you cry
Don’t worry if you don’t
Just talk to me

Don’t be afraid
Don’t be unnatural
Don’t be anything you don’t want to be
Just talk to me

Don’t hesitate to shout if you feel like it
Don’t hesitate to rant
Don’t pretend
Just talk to me

Don’t forget to laugh with me
Don’t forget that I’m the one who started all this
Don’t be surprised if I talk back
Just talk to me

Don’t forget to listen
Don’t forget I care more than you can possibly imagine
Don’t worry about the silence
Just talk to me
Just talk to me
Just talk to me

Dear Friends

I hope you have all had a lovely week in the sunshine. I now look after my youngest granddaughter on a Thursday, so have had a lovely time watching her enjoying all the sights and sounds of a sunny June. Mind you, her favourite activity is watching our Labrador – Wellington, who she’s thinks is the funniest thing on the planet. Luckily Wellie loves her too, and being only 8 months old she’s not yet of an age where she can really harass him. Her joy in discovering everything around her reminds me that we shouldn’t take any of it for granted either, we may have seen it many times, but all of nature is still a wondrous sight.

Rev Liz, and Doug are taking a well earned break from Monday until 12 July, so we wish them a wonderful holiday and may they come back refreshed in both mind and spirit. Graham Everness and Martin Gilpin along with others from both our churches are filling in for the next few weeks, a huge thank you to them for agreeing to take services, we look forward to welcoming you back to our churches.

I’m sure you will all join me in wishing Jo and Graham Hunt warmest congratulations on their marriage which takes place today (12 June) at St Margaret’s, may they have a long and very happy life together.

Tomorrow there is 10.30am Cafe church at Capel and 9.30am Holy communion at Ockley. We also have a church tea at Capel in the afternoon 3-5pm, so do come along and join us for what promises to be a sunny afternoon.

Talking of church teas, St Margaret’s will be hosting teas on 4 July, 1 August and 5 September 3-5pm. This is a new venture for Ockley so please do support them.

You will also be pleased to hear that the Pavilion Cafe is returning (subject to covid regulations) and hopes to restart on 30 June. The Cafe will be open as normal from 9am to 12noon serving coffee and cake and on the last Wednesday of the month the ever popular bacon butties.

As normal I attach this week’s readings, weekly sheet and the bishops sermon this week given by Archdeacon Martin. You can find the Youtube video of this sermon here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdT6ELw2b7U

The weekly sheets have a number of ‘dates for your diary’ – do take a look, and mark them on your calendar.

Lastly, our photos of the week are of the beautiful flowers in Capel church for the funeral of David Collinson, may he rest in peace and his family feel the love and care of the Lord at this time.

With love and prayers

We had wonderful weather for the church teas at Capel last weekend. Thank you to everyone who came, we sold a lot of plants, drank copious amounts of tea and filled ourselves with delicious cake, whilst raising £260 for the church. A particular thank you to the helpers, Joy, Jessie and Eric, Betty, Wendy and Philomena. If you feel you might be able to help at one of the teas later in the summer, do sign the list at the back of Capel church. We look forward to seeing you there.

We’ve been given another very kind donation for our Capel path appeal, which means that the fund is now up to £1,312. If you would like to contribute, you can do so by replying to this email and I will send you details of ways to give.

I’m sure you will have seen Suzanne’s email earlier in the week saying that the newest edition of InSpire is now available in our churches. It has a particularly beautiful cover to commemorate the Queen’s 95th birthday. You can also view it online here:
www.capelandockleychurch.org.uk/2021/06/02/june-2021-issue-no-51-happy-95th-birthday-to-hm-the-queen/

Do let me know if there are any village events (particularly Ockley ones) that you would like us to advertise, I don’t always get to hear about them until they’ve happened so feel free to email me.

This week’s sheets along with Bishop Jo’s sermon are attached, photo of the week is a view of the pond at Friday street, on a lovely sunny morning this week. If you would like to watch Bishop Jo’s sermon you can see it here:
