COVID-19 Briefing 25/08

After so many months of lockdown, I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated a holiday quite as much as the 10 days we’ve just enjoyed as a family. It was a precious gift to visit elderly parents in Pembrokeshire for the first time this year – and to swim in the beautifully warm Cleddau estuary! And I realised how much I needed the rest. Just before going away, I failed to show up for a meeting that I’d organised, sent a blank card to a colleague (having put the wrong card into the envelope), and made a regrettable mistake with an email.

Such mistakes helped me extend compassion towards the restaurant where we enjoyed some family time last week. After a long wait to be served, the staff got the orders completely mixed up and we ended up, after a very staggered meal, with starters being served after the main course. The poor manager explained that, whilst they appreciated the government’s help through the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme, they weren’t prepared for the volume of custom and that they were under-staffed, over-tired and struggling to cope with such a very different regime.

So many people I’ve chatted to in the last few months have spoken about tiredness. It’s made me reflect upon Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:28: ‘Come unto me, all you that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest’. This verse surmounted the east window in the church where I was last vicar and faced me every time I entered the building. I remember thinking that God must have divinely ordered it to be there just for my benefit – 130 years after the church was built – for I know in that season of leadership, I needed to hear it on a daily basis.

Later this week, we celebrate the feast of St Augustine of Hippo – one of the greatest theologians of the early church. This verse was a particularly important one for Augustine. He wrote ‘I have read in Plato and Cicero things that are wise and very beautiful; but I have never read in either of them: Come to me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’. It inspired one of his best known and loved prayers which has echoed down through the centuries: ‘Almighty God, you have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you’.

I wonder whether this verse is a particularly appropriate one for this season? I’m grateful that the staff of Church House Guildford currently begin every week by hearing these words. They’re a helpful reminder that, whilst breaks and holidays are essential for all of us, the ultimate rest is not a place or a period of time off, but a person – Jesus. I do hope that you’ve managed to have some time off over the summer months. But I also pray that as we look forward to a busy September and Autumn, we will constantly seek rest in the one whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light.

weekly news sheet 23/08/2020

Dear Friends

This week we welcome Revd. Liz and Doug back from their holiday in Cornwall and the Sicily Isles. They tell me they missed most of the really hot weather as the sea breezes kept it cooler than here.

The building work at both churches continues. There are plans afoot for us to have a celebratory Harvest Festival weekend in October to show off the new lighting scheme at Capel, we may even be able to manage some socially distanced church teas! Watch this space!

This week’s photo is the view southwards from Abinger Roughs – we walked there this morning from Holmbury St Mary, we dodged the showers and had a wonderful time watching the Red Kites that are now so prolific here.

Do continue to let us know if there is anything we can do for you if you are still self isolating or worried about coming into church.

With love and prayers

Dear All,

IMPORTANT:
Ockley Church is closed until the end of August, there are no services there for the next 3 Sundays. This is to allow the builders to finish the installation of the boiler and particularly the pews heaters. I’m sure we will all appreciate it when the winter comes. Please let anybody know who may not have access to a computer.

Everyone is most welcome at Capel for the 10.30 service led by Graham Everness – Revd. Liz will be back from her holidays next week.

Thank goodness the weather has broken, we may not have had much rain (unlike Dorking where I was caught in a real downpour), but at least it’s cooler. I have spent much of last week debating what plants I will grow in a particularly sunny and dry area of the garden as those that are currently there have found the last few summers rather difficult and I try not to water unless I really have to. Beth Chatto’s – ‘right plant right place’ came to mind, so I’m redesigning the area with Mediterranean plants, that should ensure that it will rain every summer from now on!

The picture of the week is Friday Street – lots of shade for a cool walk!

I attach this weeks weekly sheets, the relevant readings and Graham’s sermon along with the service sheet for those who cannot attend church tomorrow.

To mask or not to mask?

To mask or not to mask? That is the question. With apologies to Shakespeare this in fact might not be something we decide for ourselves when you read this letter because by then it will be mandatory for us all to wear masks in enclosed spaces like shops etc. We are waiting to see if that will become mandatory for us in church services as well. Many are already doing so in any case. The wearing of masks is yet another huge change in the way we live our lives at the moment. There are certainly a variety of different masks to choose from with an array of the weird and wonderful to the simple disposable attire favoured by others. Like many I suspect I am learning how to wear a mask without my glasses steaming up and who knew just how much hot air comes out of our airways?! As one of my parishioners who will remained unnamed quipped when I suggested he might wish to move back a pew or two from my projected droplets he felt it was quite safe to remain where he was as hot air rises!! (At the moment I am not masked until I distribute communion wafers)

We are delighted to be able to not only get back into our church buildings but also to be able to hold church services once again. As you will no doubt gather services are somewhat different as we cannot sing as a congregation and services are simplified. We miss singing together of course but in a way it has also been good to listen to recorded music of hymns being sung or to enjoy our different musicians and soloists live in church along with the comforting music played by our organists which hold everything together. Services are by nature more reflective which I think we are appreciating as we take up our lives once more together.

It is a joy too to see children out and about in their summer holidays enjoying the countryside. What a joy it must be for our teachers and school assistants to hopefully get some time off too. I know just how hard and challenging it has been for our local schools to operate under lockdown and not only to continue teaching online but also keeping school open for children of key  workers and others. Then of course there is the organisation needed to reopen schools again with all the necessary thought and preparation but of course the joy for teachers and pupils to see each other again. Even I was greeted with great joy by one class ‘bubble’ when dropping something off to their teacher at the school gate. I was very touched and it certainly made my day!

There is much going on structurally in both our churches this summer. At St Margaret’s the much needed and long awaited heating project is going ahead with a new boiler and heating system, which will be much appreciated by us all! Thank you to those who have contributed and assisted in gathering the necessary funds through The Friends of St Margaret’s so that this could happen. The Loo Project will be next!! At St John, the Friends of St John the Baptist have funded a new interior lighting system which will transform the church in several ways. It will be much cheaper to run, saving energy and creating task orientated options as part of the renewal and upgrade. It will enhance our beautiful church highlighting certain architectural features along with lighting designed for occasional visitors as they enter the church. We are grateful that The Friends have granted us funds for this as the church would not be as lovely and as well cared for if previous generations had not invested money into our church buildings at both Ockley and Capel. Co-incidentally both projects though are happening at the same time which means that visitors cannot access the church interiors during the summer midweek. However they will both be open all day at weekends. I am sorry for any inconvenience this causes but the results in both churches I am sure will be more than worth it!

We are also welcoming our friend Shaun Williamson back this month as he begins work on the restoration of the north section of the boundary wall at Capel. We now have enough funding to complete this section which is marvellous and thank you to those who have donated and worked tirelessly to obtain funding from outside sources. Do go and have a chat with Shaun as he will be only too happy to show you what he is doing.

On a sadder note we said goodbye this last month to someone who has been very much part of Capel village life for a long time and that very special person was Gillian Ashwood who many of you will have known and she may even have taught you to play the piano or perhaps you sang in her church choir? Due to current restrictions around numbers allowed in church for funerals her service was a private family one and it is hoped that there will be a public memorial service later next year. We remember Gillian with much love and gratitude for all that she gave to not only St Johns but in so many ways in this local community. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband John and their family.

So there is much to give thanks for as we enter this traditional holiday month of August and even if you are unable to go away somewhere I pray that you will find rest and relaxation whatever you are doing. Times have changed somewhat, but one thing never changes and that is God. He never changes ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever’ (Hebrews 13.8). Therefore be encouraged and do not fear!

With my love and prayers
Revd Liz

COVID-19 Briefing 04/08

Between posts last autumn, our new DDO Craig Holmes ran an ultra-marathon. I remember googling ‘Grand to Grand Ultra’ to learn more about him (and it). I couldn’t quite believe what I read amidst pictures of rocky outcrops and campsites in the desert: Challenge yourself to an experience unlike any other. Running from the rim of the Grand Canyon to the summit of the Grand Staircase you will discover new strengths and lifelong friends, running in the remotest part of America. Grand to Grand has become a legendary feat of endurance. Are you up for it?’

You can ask Craig for yourself how it went. He survived, though I don’t think even he understands quite how, in some parts. One element was utterly key: the comfort and joy of being in it with others. Of not being alone.

Back in April I recall Bishop Andrew urging us in lockdown to prepare for a marathon not a sprint. Now in August, it seems to be turning into an ultra-marathon. The end point continues to recede and the dangers of exhaustion and discouragement increase.

From the Local Ministry Programme to confirmation classes, from baptisms to ordinations, from homegroups to almost every parish worship service across the diocese, we need to dig deep, slim down and stick together. Like never before we’re forced to ask: what is essential?

It is essential that we continue to worship, lifting our hearts together to the Almighty who chooses to be with us forever in Christ. And it is essential that each disciple is resourced for their running– to step out each morning in faith and witness. At the risk of stating the obvious, our campsites may flex and the meal options be hybrid. That might mean sharing worship services or youth meetings or alpha courses or music resources for a season, between churches and across deaneries. I urge clergy and lay ministers and wardens to reduce not increase their load: by working out what they have that can readily be shared, and by working out what they need that could be received from others.

A diocese is nothing if not about recognising the comfort and joy of being in this together.  Our Parish Coordination Team has been founded for this very purpose, and it has never been so lean and fit and focused. Do contact them with your offerings and your longings – so they can do what they exist to do, and coordinate us all!

Finally, I want to repeat: we are in this together. Would you help foster our fellowship and camaraderie at this time? No need to manage this ultra-marathon alone. Please ask for help, and offer help. Grand to grand. Parish to Parish. Ultra!

+ Jo

Face masks
Last week the Prime Minister announced that face masks are going to become mandatory from 8 August in places of worship. You can see here for guidance that has been drawn up by Church House. Please note that the Church of England intends to publish guidance on this by Thursday so we may need to adjust ours, but we wanted to get something out to you earlier in the week in order to help you prepare for this Sunday. The Church of England guidance will be uploaded here when it becomes available and we will also alert you to any differences via our facebook group, so do keep a look out.

What happens if there is a local lock-down?
Last week, we saw another local lock-down initiated in Greater Manchester, East Lancashire and parts of North Yorkshire. We recognize that we are all only just re-adjusting to the new normal of lock-down and the thought of going back into another lock-down is not something we want to face again. However, it is important to plan for such a scenario and so below is some guidance on what to expect should the Government initiate a lock-down in our area.

In the event that there is a local lock-down, in the first instance we ask that you follow Government guidance and local government guidance. We appreciate that it is often unclear or unavailable but we ask that you initially respond locally based on what guidelines are available and the experiences you gained during the original national lock-down. Local parish decisions and actions will be affected by a number of factors specific to your community and the risks during that period.

As a Diocese we will provide, as soon as we are able, additional Church of England Guidance and supporting information.

Local government, NHS and other organisations are working together to identify, be ready for and contain localised outbreaks by creating Local Outbreak Control Plans. Below are copies of the Local Outbreak Control Plans relevant to parishes across the diocese:

We’d advise familiarizing yourself with your local resilience forums and local Government plans

How to Report an Outbreak – action cards for display in your Church or Place of Work
Please download, print, complete and display somewhere prominent in your building. You will also want to include in your risk assessment how to report a local break out and whose responsibility it will be to do so.

Planning for Autumn Festivals while dealing with COVID-19 changes
We are aware that with guidance changing so frequently many parishes are looking no more than a few Sundays into the future in terms of planning. However we wanted to make you aware that at Church House we are starting to gather a list of suggestions, resources and planning tools for the autumn festivals (particularly harvest, Remembrance, Advent and Christmas).

We will be sharing more about this in the weeks to come, but at this point we have two (not at all urgent) requests to make of you:
1. If you are planning anything for the autumn festivals that you would be willing to share with other parishes (ideas, videos, scripts etc) please do send them through to parishcoordination@cofeguildford.org.uk
2. If you are starting to plan ahead for Christmas you might want to consider using the Church of England theme and resources for this year of Comfort and Joy.

You can read more about it on the Church of England webpage here including why they have chosen the theme especially for the current circumstances. We hope that the more parishes that use this theme, the more resources will be available to share and lessen the burden of all our parishes.  Church House will also be sharing more ideas on this theme in the autumn.
