A birthday and Christmas

Capel Choral Society on TV – whatever next?

After their appearance on BBC’s Countryfile on 12th October, the choir were surprised and delighted by the messages received from former signers and long-ost friends, and would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their good wishes.

And what is next? Well, it was a birthday – the Choir was founded on 22nd October 1904, so we celebrated the 110th anniversary of the meeting that agreed that ‘there was sufficient musical talent in the village to form the society’.  The Choir took part in the inaugural Leith Hill Musical Festival in 1905, and has participated in every Festival since; it is the only Festival choir with this record. At our usual Monday rehearsal nearest the date there was a ceremonial cutting of a cake and a drinking of toasts, while remembering all the singers, music and conductors in the Choir’s long history.

Then it was back to work – we have now started rehearsing for the Christmas Season during which we will be singing carols at Polesden Lacey on 14th December, at the invitation of the National Trust, closely followed by our Christmas Concert on Monday the 15th.

At the Christmas Concert the choir will be performing the delightful Messe de Minuit by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704); the work is based on dance tunes of the period. We will also be singing two settings of O Magnum Mysterium by two composers born 400 ears apart, William Bryd and Mortem Lauridsen.

The concert will be in the church of St John the Baptist, Capel starting at 7:30pm, and tickets are £7.50 which includes our traditional mulled wine and mince pied afterwards. For advance bookings, please contact our Secretary, details below.

We shall be very pleased to welcome you at the concert or at Polesden, or at rehearsals in the New Year when we will be preparing for the 2015 Leith Hill Festival in the Spring – with the prospect of singing the new piece Dances of Time especially written for the Festival by the world famous composer Bob Chilcott.

See information about, and pictures of, the choir on our website, www.capelchoralsociety.com or contact our Secretary at secretary@capelchoralsociety.com or phone 01306 712365

A “Great Big” Thank You

This is a “Great Big” thank you to everyone for supporting the Capel Music Festival 2014!

Without the help of dozens of volunteers, local businesses, stall holders, sponsors, advertisers and many more people who gave their time, skills and resources for free or at minimal cost, this event could not happen.

We are delighted to announce that this year we raised a massive £7,300.

The main CMF charity, The Amber Foundation have received a donation of £5,000 and the remains funds will provide support to many other local charities, yet to be decided. The CMF are particularly grateful to the Dorking Advertiser who were the media sponsor again this year and were very generous in providing regular coverage of all actives and events associated with the Festival.

The Capel Music Festival is a fantastic and fun way for our community to work together and support and make a difference to all sorts of worthy causes. If you feel you are a worthy cause and have a particular project you need money for please contact Emma, details below to make an application. If you would like to get involved in future events please contact us via Emma Jaques, we would love to hear from you. Emma can be contacted via info@capelmusicfestival.org.uk.

Capel Classic Car & Bike Show – Saturday 16th August 2014

Saturday 16th August 2014  12-5pm in aid of The Friends of St. John the Baptist Church

The 2014 Show continues united with Horticulture, and we we hope the weather will be an improvement on last year!

In spite of this the support in 2013 from both exhibits and public was brilliant so if you were on of those then thank you for making the effort and we hope you had a great afternoon.

Now we are back again on Saturday 16th August this year, to continue the success with our “Green Friends.”

The Cars and Bikes are open for business from 12 mid-day on the Capel Memorial Playing Field – so Don’t Miss It!

All monies raised go to “The Friends of St John The Baptist” and are directed towards the upkeep of the Capel Church so please go and have a look and see how well you look after it.

We look forward to seeing as many of you on the day and with find weather!

Brownie Gang Show

In September and October the Brownies went to Leatherhead to practice for a very special Gang Show to raise money for Faurefold in Westcott, where we go for a stay overnight and have fun activities. We had to practice to make sure we were loud and clear for the big day at Dorking Halls on 2nd November. We had 2 shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. There were lots of Brownies and Guides from the local groups and they all had a song or act to do. We sang ‘Brownie Queen!’ It is a version of Abba’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and even our leaders dressed up and joined in and looked like they were really enjoying it! Our final song was ‘Reach for the stars’ which everyone joined in and sang along With. We enjoyed it so much and all had a great day -it was AMAZING!
