On Sunday 6th August Capel will once again play host to the annual Capel Music Festival which will feature a superb line-up of popular acts including The Prognosis, ERIKA, The SoulCatz, New Rising and also Sweet Revenge while raising much needed funds for local charities. As in previous years, there will  also be a beer and cider tent courtesy of the Dorking Brewery, a variety of delicious food stalls, a kids’ zone, a VIP area and some fabulous raffle prizes up for grabs.

Now in its sixth year, the Capel Music Festival will be raising money for Ockley-based charity Amber as well as a number of smaller local charities.

Amber is an active and accommodating residential centre helping disadvantaged 17-30 year olds and provides 24 hour care and support every day of the year for young homeless people; many have a history of addiction or have been involved in crime or have been in prison. Able to support up to 32 individuals, it provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help overcome each of the obstacles that have previous stood between them and independent living. Working in teams they experience positive peer support, feel valued and motivated. There are many opportunities at Amber including art, crafts, extended education, music, drama and sport. Everyone is encouraged to set their own goals and  begins to realise that with work, commitment, enthusiasm and determination, they are in fact able to achieve and fulfil potential. To date, the confirmed line-up of acts is as follows:

  •  The Prognosis – recently voted winners of Prog Rock Magazines Best Unsigned 2 Band Award 2013, The prognosis originate from Dorking. Formed in 2005, The prognosis are musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds – an organ scholar, an experimental synth-guitarist, an experienced jazz-rock drummer and two seasoned campaigners from the party-band circuit. Their passion is to recreate and perform a variety of classic prog-rock tracks with a level of authenticity and expertise befitting this music era as well as writing new progressive rock songs – but with a modern twist. Today there are many tribute bands who focus on playing the work of only one band but The Prognosis is different. The band is a tribute to the genre and a time of incredible musical innovation. Their typical set list includes music from Genesis, Pink Floyd, Focus, Camel, ELP, Rush, Supertramp. Steve Hackett and Jethro Tull as well as their own original compositions.
  • ERIKA — Erika has emerged from a life coloured by the musical corners of London town and japan. While it was initially opera and musical theatre in which she found her voice, as her birthdays passed she discovered the soundtrack to her early daydreams and pop greats such as Kylie and Carly Simon had their influence. Later ERIKA found herself as much at home with the 90s rave scene as she did with the heavy rock scene and from this union of diversity emerges a style of ‘epic pop’. But don’t get complacent. ERIKA is not all catchy riffs and bubblegum. There is a darkness to her songs that you don’t  have to dig that deep to find.
  • Newrising – drawing influence from  a massive musical spectrum, Newrising combine elements of funk roots, urban soul, raggae, blues, rock and Latin. A distinctive sense of musical character resides throughout their infectious, well-sculpted songs. They have shared stages with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Newton  Faulknew, Mungo Jerry and IOCC to name just a few. Newrising have also appeared at many of the UK’s best and biggest festivals including Bestival and Secret Garden Party as well as travelling abroad to play the Virgin Holiday’s Music Festival in Barbados two years running. They are currently working on their second album having caught the ears and imagination of Ed Sheeran and many more with their first. Here is a band worth keeping an ear to the ground for.
  • Sweet Revenge – a fabulous, energetic young band who write their own material of distinct rock, from the hard and fast “You Don’t Know Me” to the anthemic “Looking for Rock”. Sweet Revenge have been influenced by AC/DC, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, What Now, Bullet From My Valentine and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They have spent the last two years gaining crucial live experience at East Court’s Picnic in the Park and The Arc at Caterham, twice winning the coveted prize of “Battle of the Bands” at school, performing at Esher’s ‘Celebration of Youth’ and, finally, not forgetting the school assemblies! They are gathering momentum and gaining plenty of attention. Between school, homework and exams, the boys have managed to write a dozen songs and to save enough pocket money to record 4 of them at Coach Road Studios. This is just the
    beginning!

There are still a number of sponsorship opportunities available and organisers are also keen to hear from businesses that would like to donate prizes to the raffle or take a stall on the day.
