Capel W.I – Meeting on 22nd July

Our speaker this evening was Ann Meadows of NAFAS Surrey Area.

Ann started off the ‘Summer Bounty’ talk by showing us how to arrange flowers of all different colours of the spectrum in a large wicker basket. It was absolutely stunning. She explained that she plans the colours, flowers and containers before an evening like ours and gave us various advice and pointers along the way. By now our ladies were enthralled and when she finished with placing several beautiful yellow roses in the display, everyone couldn’t help but gasp. The second arrangement was based on greenery and finishing with the most delicate calla lilies.

Ann showed us how to arrange flowers in a white English basket using hosta leaves, several varieties of greenery and Ethiopian roses, called ‘Belle’. Simply beautiful!

After enjoying a cup of tea and a slice of cake Ann very kindly judged flower arrangements brought in by our members and then her gorgeous baskets were raffled to our members, much to their delight.

Capel Parish Notes For September

MVDC Housing and Traveller Sites Plan – Responses to this are now being considered by the District Council which aims to publish a proposed submission version in early 2015. This document will outline which sites MVDC believes are the most suitable for development and there will then be a formal six week consultation on that document.

Planning Matters – Proposed Solar Panel Development

The Parish Council is concerned that because the consultation period for Application Reference No Mo/2014/1092 falls during the summer holidays residents may not be aware that there is a proposal for a Solar Panel Development at Cracker Barrel Farm on land adjacent to the A24 Capel By-Pass, Horsham Road, Beare Green. This would involve the construction of a 12.6 hectare (over 40 acre) solar farm and associated works which would be constructed on rising land on either side of the A24 between Wigmore Lane and the Beare Green Roundabout. Details can be viewed by clicking on the Link to the Mole Valley website.

The Parish Council response to the application can be seen on the PC website: www.capel-pc.gov.uk under Council documents.

Responses will still be considered up until the beginning of October so please do respond to MVDC is you have not already done so.

Capel Show is Growing!

It’s not just the fruit and vegetables that have been growing at the annual Capel Show. A record number of people visited Capel Recreation Ground on Saturday (16 August) to enjoy a larger than ever number of exhibits across the entire show. The Horticultural Society had over 750 entries to exhibits in the grand marquee. There were new classes to attract children to growing plants and some wonderful, and sometimes weird, vegetable collections! Delectable cakes and chutneys sat alongside floral displays, handicrafts and photographs. Outside, the Classic Car and Bike Show had 620 vehicles on display. This year all the Italian marques, from fiat to Ferrari, were represented. The fun Dog Show had more beautiful pets than in previous years whilst various stallholders exhibited a huge variety of goods and home produce. Potters, parrots, plantsmen, spinners, ferrets, jam and cake makers, wood turners, birds of prey – stalls to entertain and educate all ages.

Chris Coke, Chairman of Capel Horticultural Society, said “The enthusiasm of our local community to enter and attend the Summer Show grows year on year. It is hugely encouraging to see so many people growing and enjoying their own produce. I am delighted with both the numbers and standard of entries.”

Laurence Attridge won the highly prized Banksian Medal as the overall winner of the horticultural classes and, as he did last year, Robert Astrop won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Bronze Medal for the most meritorious exhibit in cut flowers and pot plants (please see full list Summer Show Results for more results).

Capel Sports Pavilion

We have commenced a Feasibility Study involving a specialist Sports Pavilion Design Company to make sure we have considered all options on the site and to attempt to firm up the costings. This is proving to be a worthwhile exercise that has in part been funded by Surrey Cricket.

We held an excellent fundraiser in August with a game between the men and women in fancy dress with fabulous music after by Will & Chris. This event was fantastically supported and many people were fined for bad behaviour as fines alone contributed £756.00 towards the £2,000.00 raised that evening.

I will keep you informed on progress but an early heads up for your diary is a Race Night in the Village Hall on Saturday 8th November. I will post details on tickets and how those who can’t attend can sponsor a Horse or a race in next month’s issue.

Capel Choral Society : SOS (Support Our Singers) Part 2

The first rehearsal of Capel Choral Society’s 2014/15 season will take place in the Memorial Hall on Monday 8th September. The choir will be just over a month away from celebrating its 110th anniversary, having been formed by a meeting at the Schools on 22nd October 1904.

We are looking forward on this occasion, and the Season ahead, which will include our own musical events as well as preparation for the Leith Hill Musical Festival in April 2015. The Festival will be particularly exciting this year – Brian Kay has been Festival Conductor for 20 years and in his honour a new work has been commissioned which will be given its World Premiere at the 2015 Festival. The work is entitled Dances of Time and has been written by world-renowned composer Bob Chilcott. Singers attending a ‘Come & Sing’ on September at Dorking Halls will have the unique experience of the first sing-through of this work!

Apart from the Festival, the Choir will be giving its own Christmas Concert on 15th December and will also be singing Carols at Polesden Lacey on 14th December.

As you will have seen in the August edition of this magazine, Capel Choral is very keen to recruit new singers. We have reached the point where the Choir really needs YOUR support to continue making music – it would be very sad if this founding member of the Leith Hill Festival were to be lost to Capel and the Festival. The answer is to increase our number of singers, so we appeal to all you potential singers out there to give choral singing a try. The forthcoming Autumn Term is a good time to come along and join in with this enthusiastic group of singers and experience the joy of choral singing. There is no audition and you don’t have to be able to read music although some knowledge of musical notation would help. And there is the prospect of singing in the Dances of Time!

Our first rehearsal, starting at 7:45pm on 8th September will start with drinks and nibbles so you will be able to get to know the other singers. If you know a member of the choir, do ask them about it, or see information about, and pictures of, the choir on our website, www.capelchoralsociety.com – or contact our Secretary at secretary@capelchoralsociety.com or phone 01306 712365

Capel Badminton Club

Our new season is starting on Thursday 4th September so why not come and join us? We are a small friendly club that meets every Thursday between 7:30 and 9:30pm at Capel Memorial Hall. We would welcome experienced players, improvers and those who would just like to get back into the game. Unfortunately we do not have a junior section. If you would like to join us, please just turn up any Thursday or for further information phone Judy 01306 711462.
