It is good to hear that the Capel Community Orchard, a joint venture with Capel Society of Friends and the Church, was duly planted with fruit trees at the end of January. Many thanks to the Friends for all they have done to enable this to proceed.

ADHD Centre In Capel
For the past 35 years I have worked with children and young people, many with “challenging” behaviour. I remember certain characters that would burst through the youth club doors and thinking “oh no, her we go!”. I also have diaries of the years I managed Leslie House, a homeless hostelin Dorking and have enough material to write a TV series one day!
It was in the early nineties that Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) became more widely understood. During those years, when John and I ran a foster home at Westcott, I learnt firsthand the difficulties of living with complex and impulsive individuals.
In 2001 I founded the first Studio ADHD Centre in Dorking and then in 2004 we moved to Capel and replaced Ken Newel’s greenhouse with the Studio building. Since that time we have been inundated with requests for help and have to limit beneficiaries to those in Surrey, although we believe the Studio is unique in its style in the UK.
As a Charity we have been dependent on the local authority for grants from education and youth services to fund the salaries of key staff posts. However due to cuts to all services, Surrey County Council no longer funds us and previous grants for salaries have ended. It is now an exceptionally competitive to secure funds from the lottery and Children in Need, etc, which is why we have had to launch a local appeal, both in the press and on our website, to raise £50K to ensure The Studio can stay open.
We appreciate the regular donations and support from the John Ede Trust, the Capel’s Mens’s Group, The Music Festival and other donors and hope that we can encourage further support from those who understand the value of The Studio as a local charity.

Animals Galore at Scott-Broadwood!
The topic for our children is The Carnival of the Animals and they have been thinking particularly about animals that can be found in tropical rainforests and the habitats they live in; comparing them to animals they might see in Surrey. They have also been thinking about the different weather in both places – lots of rain in the rainforests, but at least it is warm rain!
We have welcomed 2 wonderful groups of children into our Reception classes and they have been learning about themselves and their families. Skeletons have been studied and made out of straws and the children enjoy sharing information about their families and where they live.
Starting school in September 2015? Scott-Broadwood is an excellent place for children to begin their school experience. We have bases in both Ockley and Capel, both with well used outside areas (Our children love to learn outside, come rain or shine!) and dedicated staff who provide rich and stimulating learning experiences within a nurturing environment.
If your child is due to start school in September 2015, (born between 1 Sept 2010 and 31 Aug 2011) please come along to see our school in action at one of our Open Sessions:
Tuesday 4th Nov between 9:30 and 11:30am at Ockley base (Headteacher talk at 10.00 and 11.00).
Thursday 6th Nov between 9:30 and 11.30am at Capel base (Headteacher talk at 10.00 and 11.00).
Or Thursday 13th Nov at 7:00pm at Capel (but for those interested in either Ockley or Capel bases).
We look forward to meeting you soon.

Capel Classics 2014
This year’s show was tinged with sadness as The Friends’ long standing treasurer, Mike Baty, died a few days before. Mike has always been an integral part in the success of the Show, usually in the background collecting the money on his bike – and there is much around on the day – banking it and looking after all the accounts. He will be much missed, not only as a good man but as a tireless and happy worker and an integral part of the community.
On the day the forecast got ir right, light winds with sunshine and the occasional cloud ensured a perfect recipe for a grand day out.
The continuing combination of Fruit and Veg and Cars and Bikes and numerous other stalls is always a great mix and a unique attraction for all the people and their families and more than 3000 seemed to agree.
More than 620 Cars and Bikes and other various varieties of motorised vehicles also agreed. Military and Commercial – Vintage and Veteran – Big and Small – Car Clubs and Bike clubs – in fact classics of all descriptions and all ages, navigated their way along the A24 into Capel and such was the attraction the many unregistered who came late had to be turned away.
This year’s combined Car and Bike marque was based on country. Names like Ferrari/ Maserati/ Fiat/ Alfa Romeo / Lamborghini mixed with Ducati/ Moto Guzzi/ Laverda and other intoxica brought Italy to Surrey!
Brisk trade was evident throughout the many commercial outlets on the field, and especially the pizzas. Added to all this was the Capel Talent Show on Saturday evening and the Music Festival throughout Sunday. Where else could you get a community so united and well organised.
So ends another fantastic Capel Weekend? Huge thanks must go to the many people who set it all up and on the days, helped control the crowds and the roads, car parks, registrations, layouts etc… and then (just as importantly) took it all down and cleared it all up afterwards (always impressive). So a huge THANK YOU to YOU ALL.
Two specific “THANK YOU’S” without whose involvement nothing could or would have happened. Bill Turner – for the use of his field for parking the ever-increasing public requirement. Capel Parish Council for all the work they do throughout the year and especially for ensuring that the Recreational Field is not only available but also in prime condition to act as a suitable “Showcase”.
Will we do it all again next year? After the success of this year and reflecting on our heritage – thanks Mike – then how can we not, so keep 15/16th August 2015 free just in case!
PS – a retiring collection was held for Cancer Research and raised £412 – enough said!

Capel Choral Society: Into Autumn
Capel Choral Society is well into its autumn ‘term’ and has enjoyed a first ‘sing-through’ of the music it is singing during the 2014/15 Season. It has also taken part in a ‘Come & Sing’ event at Dorking Halls at which the new work Dances of Time by Bob Chilcott was sung for the first time. – the piece was especially commissioned for the Leith Hill Musical Festival.
As well as music for the Festival, the Choir will be learning music for its Christmas concert (on 15th December) – this will include Charpentier’s delightful Messe de Minuit, and Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium.
On a non-musical level, the Choir will be holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 4th October, in the Memorial Hall, from 10am to Midday. Please do come along and meet members of the choir, enjoy a cup of coffee and some cake, take part in a raffle, and of course buy some goodies on offer. Capel Choral will be celebrating its 110th birthday this month, and we are hoping to grow the choir this season to ensure that it will still be singing in 2024 and beyond. We would still welcome new singers (it will be fairly easy to ‘catch up’ at this stage of the term) and especially MEN. Choral singing is an enjoyable activity with proven health benefits, and few things beat the satisfaction of mastering a new piece of music!
See information about, and pictures of, the choir on our website, www.capelchoralsociety.com – or contact our Secretary at secretary@capelchoralsociety.com or phone 01306 712365
Capel Music Festival
Dear Capel Village
Many of you have seen the double page spread in the Dorking Advertiser following the Capel Music Festival 2014. Capel was described as the “Rock Capital of Surrey”, with “a high standard of music and great beer” in holding its 6th Annual Music Festival on the Recreational Ground. Thank you to all of you who joined the group of hard-working and dedicated volunteers to make the festival the success that it was. The money raised will be distributed amongst local charities with The Amber Foundation, Ockley as the main beneficiary.
Best Wishes
The CMF team
The Evergreens
On the 18th August we set off for Capel Manor Gardens which, surprisingly, is not in our Capel but in Enfield. The weather was fine we had a good trip along the M25.
The Gardens themselves are really lovely with many small-themed gardens such as Australian Garden, Japanese Garden and a recycled Garden. We went into the Maze and really got lost and kept passing the same crisp packet over and over. We never did get to the centre and wouldn’t have got out if we hadn’t been rescued by one of the other Evergreens. There was an animal stockyard where the main attraction was the Meerkats who kept everyone entertained.
Altogether a most interesting trip.
