Capel Music Festival 2013

The hugely popular Capel Music Festival will be launching on Saturday 18th May with a number of pre-events featuring great music, food, raffle prizes and a fantastic atmosphere. Proceeds from the pre-events will go to St Catherine’s Hospice, The Studio ADHD Centre and a number of small local charities, all of whom will also benefit from the actual festival itself.

The first pre-event on 18th May takes place at The Crown in Capel from 6pm onwards. Entry is free and there’ll be live music and a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs.

On 8th June, the pre-event is being staged at Treetops in Capel from midday until late. Once again, entry is free and there’ll be loads of live bands and refreshments including a hog roast. All proceeds from this event will go to St Catherine’s Hospice.

It’s then back to The Crown in Capel on 20th July where bands will be on stage from 4pm onwards. Entry is free and there’ll be a BBQ and a raffle. The Crown’s Open Mic night will also be running from 5pm to 8pm so there’ll be plenty of talent on display.

On 10th August, it’s off to the Inn on the Green in Ockley for live music, good pub food and a raffle. Once again, entry is free.

Finally, we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be holding a final exciting pre-event in Capel on 17th August. Further details to follow but please save the date.

The actual Capel Music Festival will take place on 18th August from midday onwards with an after party at The Crown. We’re currently recruiting volunteers for the festival and also for the pre-event on 8th June so please get in touch with Dawn Hinton on 07730 584 871 if you are able to help. Please also contact Dawn if you are able to donate any prizes for the raffles.

Quartet

We will be showing the hugely successful film , Quartet, at our next performance on Tuesday May 7th in Capel Village Memorial Hall.  Doors open at 7.30 pm for an 8 pm start.

thequartet

Quartet is a 2012 British comedy-drama film based on the play of the same title by Ronald Harwood, which ran in London’s West End from September 1999 until January 2000. It was filmed late in 2011 at Hedsor House, Buckinghamshire. The film is actor Dustin Hoffman‘s directorial debut.  The cast includes some great actors.

We look forward to seeing you again.  For the future we have booked ‘Arbitrage’ for June, and ‘Lincoln’ for the last in the current season 2nd July (we just couldn’t make it for the fourth of July!).  Then we take a summer (we hope) break during August and July, recommencing on the first Tuesday in October.

Flix In The Stix – Capel’s Cinematic Experience

Our film for the next month promises to be a cracker! “Argo”. It is based on an almost unbelievable true story: when the Iranians famously seized the US Embassy in Teheran in 1969, six US diplomats fled to the Canadian Embassy. An extraordinary plot was concocted to get them out under the cover of a fake film being shot in the Iranian desert, without compromising the neutrality of the Canadians and of course without the Iranian revolutionaries finding out. It actually did happen. This is a thrilling film, far better and more intelligent than the conventional action movie. Dramatic, nail biting and hilarious, Ben Affleck and John Goodman star.

Come and enjoy this film on the big screen in the Memorial Hall, Capel on Tuesday, 2nd April. Doors open 7:30pm. Programme commences 8pm. Pre-fil and interval refreshments available. Admission £4. Everyone welcome.

I now have a selection of films for the future, subject to availability, and not necessarily in this order, just an appetite wetter!

Quartet – Lincoln – Arbitrage – Song For Marion

The Crown Inn, Capel, is kindly offering special meal-deals again to those attending the film show on the night from 6pm. It is advisable to book in advance to ensure you can enjoy your meal comfortably before the film: telephone 711130

The Brilliant Capel Village Disco

On 9 February 2013 the Committee organised its annual Disco for parents and friends of the Pre-school. We were lucky enough to have a live performance from The Practice and an excellent disco provided by Mark Sugden-Best of Treetops Studio. The event was very well attended (tickets sold out!) and raised £1,176 for the Preschool, which takes us much closer to our target for a new all-weather cover for the outdoor play area. We would like to thank all of the friends, family and local businesses who supported us, including:

Carters of Capel for selling tickets
Mark Sugden-Best & Phil Ware for the music/sound
The Practice for their live performance
Gary Collins for lighting the hall
Red Chilli of Dorking for a fantastic 2 course meal
Jane & John Chilvers for all their help in the kitchen

Capel And Beare Green’s Green Belt

The Mole Valley District Council is under pressure from central government to find areas withing the Green Belt for building new homes, in order to meet stringent targets. About 75% of the Mole Valley is within the Green Belt which surrrounds London, its aim to prevent urban sprawl by keeping land permanently free from developent. The Mole Valley District Council is reviewing the Green Belt boundary, as there has to be enough land available for 3,760 new homes in the period of 2006-2026. Around 1500 of these have already been built, almost entirely within the Mole Valley’s towns and larger villages. There is no longer enough land available within these areas to accommodate the remaining homes that have to be built. The only available land is currently in the Green Belt and capel is on its very southern edge. What will be the result in Capel and in Beare Green if the Green Belt boundary is moved northwards?

The Parish Council will be discussing the situation at its meeting on March 18th. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting. There will be a 10-minute slot for questions at the Beginning. The Parish Council will prepare a written reponse for the Mole Valley District Council by March 18th, unlikley to be in time for the April issue of the Magazine.

The Mole Valley’s Green Blet boundary review document is available to view and comment on by visiting www.molevalley.gov.uk/localplans, or visiting the Council Offices in Dorking or Dorking Library. You can also contact Mole Valley (01306 88501) or email planning.policy@molevalley.gov.uk.

Capel Men’s Group Ladies Night

On Friday the 18th January the Capel mens Group entertained their Ladies to Dinner at the newly refurbished Dukes Head. Despite the snow falling heavily 50 hardy souls ventured out. We were not to be disappointed for our efforts!

Graham and his staff had really pulled out all the stops. Special round tables and crisp white linen ware had been specially brought in for the occasion. On our arrival we were greeted with a mouthwatering variety of canapés whilst waiting to join our tables. We then were treated to an excellent four course dinner (including a refreshing sorbet which we were not expecting)! After Dinner it was a pleasure to introduce Graham to our members and he rightfully received loud applause. I am sure that this will not be the last time we will be dining at the Dukes.

Capel Mens Group currently has 50 members from Capel and the immediate surrounds. We are a dining club that also raises a small amount of money that once a year we donate to local causes, the emphasis being on local. We are a relaxed group of individuals from all sorts of backgrounds who enjoy good food and each other’s company.

We meet four times a year at the Crown for a three-course dinner followed by a talk. The speaker is usually either someone talking about a local topic or local talking about a topic that is his passion or special interest. We also hold a Ladies Night in January and a BBQ in July. If anyone would like to found more please call Jonathan Graesser on 711605.
