Capel Choral Society – Come And Sing

Founded more than 100 years ago, Capel Choral s still going song.

The new 2013/14 season starts with first practice on Monday 2nd September at 7:45pm in Capel Memorial Hall, 55 The Street, RH5 5LB, and every Monday thereafter. This year we are particularly excited about the forthcoming performance of Messiah on Saturday 23rd November 7:30pm at Mary Magdalene Church, South Holmwood. This will be with full compliment of soloists and orchestra. So if you have always wanted to be part of a major choral work, then why not come along to our first practice, find out what goes on, be in at the start and then hopefully with the performances on the night. You will be most welcome. Alternatively, if you have always wanted to hear the whole complete work then put the date in your diary now – watch out for further details nearer the time. We look forward to seeing you.

The Evergreens – September 13

Our trip to Althorp on the 15th July was a truly wonderful experience and must ahve been the best tip we have had for quite a time. Several members comments were “how do we top that?” Our driver was very good, avoiding all the heavy traffic on the way home. All in a great day out!

On a more sad note we lost one of our very dear Evergreens – Olive Touzel who died on the 16th July and whose funeral service was held in Capel Village Church on 30th July. She was one of the founder members of the Evergreens and was our Treasurer for many years. She will be sadly missed.

The Capel And Ockley 2014 Pantomime!

Preparation for the forthcoming production is now under way. Rehearsals start in November with the performance over two successive weekends in February 2014.

We are on the lookout for the team members that will help make this a success.

Obviously we need actors but equally there are as many people off stage as there are on stage. If you can help with any of the following then we’d love to hear from you:

  • Adult actors (men especially)
  • Dancers
  • Choreographer’s Assistant
  • Musicians
  • Technicians
  • Front of House
  • Make up
  • Catering
  • Wardrobe/costume
  • Scenic designers/builders/helpers
  • Crowd control
  • Morticians (just checking that you were still reading!)

If this sounds like your cup of tea, why not join us for a cup of tea when we meet soon to assemble the team. Look out for more details in October. Or, for really keen expressions of interest (the phrase “yes please Martin, count me in!”) always gets my attention, call me, Martin Pratt, on 01306 628155 (eve).

News From The Weald School – September 13

You are invited to our Public Exhibition on Wednesday, 25th September between 2pm and 8pm in the Weald School Hall. As part of this exhibition we will:

  • share with you the current situation the school is in regarding the condition and suitability of the current school building
  • explore the pros and cons of some of the options open to us to enable us to ensure the school building continues to be fit for purpose
  • look at the funding avenues currently available and the probability, impact and timescale of each
  • find out what is important to the local community
  • Identify resources that are currently insufficient or missing in the locality that we could seek to address as part of any future project.

Your views are important to us and we believe strongly that together we can find the best way forward for not only the school and its current and future pupils, but also for the local community, irrespective or not as to whether they or their children have, do or will ever come through the school.

Please do join us if you can to find out more and to share your views in the most productive way possible. Please not dogs and smoking are not permitted on site and that parking will not be available before 5pm, other than for those registered as disabled.

If you are unable to make this exhibition, please watch out website as we will try to share as much as we can via this medium. Also do email your views to head@weald.surrey.sch.uk, so we can consider them alongside those that we gather on the day of the exhibition.

The 5th Capel Music Festival – 5 Aspects

Matthew, 11 – The Capel Music Festival was for a good cause because a lot of money was donated to charity. I think a wide range of people enjoyed the event since a wide range of music was played and there was lots of different stalls to enjoy. It was a good idea to have a ‘Capel’s Got Talent’ competition on Saturday night because fund for the kids and Studio ADHD were given lots of money that night! My favourite part of the festival was the act in the talent show where they used a pole that was on fire!

Mark – Not only did Mark host a pre-event in June, but he has tirelessly been the backbone (pun intended) alongside Phil W. of the sound, bands, roadying, mixing and continuity – throughout our 5 events this year, and years before.

Luke – This is I think the 3rd year that Luke has run the bar for the whole Big Weekend, adding the Capel Beer Festival to the already-heady mix, and he has done it excellently right from the start.

And John(s) – There were John’s everywhere, helping on the PA, gates, main bar, Studio ADHD stall, behind and in front of the VIP bar, and in the choir – and that’s only the ones I saw. Another I think I saw dancing with his grand-daughter.

Numbers

1 very young person is still with us, because 1 Amber guy acted very quickly.

11 brilliants acts on the bill.

12 on the CMF committee Choir Practice

25 (maybe) tons moved (e.g. 1 tonne of tables moved 7+ times + stage, PA, Spokes, Bins, Chairs, Bar, ….)

100 listed as volunteers, and more – Funktion 1, Scouts, Guides, Edes, Hortis, Classics,

2,000+ attending

15,000 pounds, probably to charities this year

A Million thanks, Capel – “ARE YOU OUT THERE ?”

Classic Cars And Bikes – “Capel Reigns!”

Once again the Capel Weekend has come and gone with another fantastic combined Show for Cars & Bikes & Vegetable & Flowers & “et al” on Saturday 17th August – followed by a fantastic Music Festival on the Sunday.

Cars and Bikes came out in ever increasing numbers – Military and Commercial – Car Clubs – Vintage – Veteran – Young And Old – Classics of all description – in fact everyone came out with the purpose to have fun and enjoy themselves – and enjoy themselves they did!

And the public came out to marvel and celebrate the Annual Weekend Extravaganza of Capel. This year was the 15th showing of Classic Cars & Bikes and generally agreed as god as last year in spite of the overcast weather and occasional rain.

More than 630 Cars and Bikes and other Varieties of motorised vehicles navigated their way along the A24 into Capel.

This year’s combined car marque was Austin and Morris – names which had offshoots into Austin Healey and MG – all synonymous with great British tradition and mass-production.

Sevens and Tens and One hundreds and Three thousands – Minor and Minis and Mokes – B’s and C’s and GT’s – all numbers and initials from the classic past.

Brisk trade was evident throughout the many commercial outlets on the field, especially for food and liquid refreshments!

Whilst the prime objective of Cars & Bikes is to raise money for the upkeep of the Church – as run by The Friends of St. John the Baptist – the occasion continues as a social and village gathering.

Huge thanks go to many people – not least the Car & Bike Committee who toil through many committee meetings, listening to words of wisdom, and their many friends and relations who help control the roads, carparks, registrations, layouts etc. On the day – and then (just as importantly) take it all down and clear it all up afterwards – so a HUGE THANK YOU to YOU ALL.

Two specific “Thank You’s” without whose involvement nothing could or would happen.

Bill Turner – for the use of his field for parking the ever-increasing public requirement.

Capel Parish Council – for all the work they do and especially for ensuring that the Recreation Field is not only available but also in prime condition to act as a suitable “showcase”.

So although it rained on occasions, Capel still reigns and long may it continue!

And will we do it all again next year? Watch this space for future classic announcements.

Andrew Forsyth.

Cabbages, Cakes, Chrysanthemums At Capel’s Horticultural Show 2013

Despite the weather forecast record numbers visited Capel Show on Saturday 17th August. The huge marquee was packed with 700 entries ranging from cupcakes to carrots, amazing dahlias, flower arrangements and perfect vegetables sat alongside creative handicrafts and photographic entries. Chris Coke, Chairman of Capel Horticultural Society, said “Considering the weather conditions over the summer months I have been delighted at the high quality of the horticultural exhibits this year as well as the record breaking number of entries.”

Capel Show offered something for everybody – the youngsters enjoyed a puppet show as well as getting up close to sheep and rabbits. There were more new stalls that never before as well as the regulars offering good food, tea and cakes. This year there were almost 600 classic cars and bikes on display.

Mandy Schryver, who organises all that goes on in the show ground, said “We think this was a vintage year and definitely our best show yet. New exhibitors included Parrot Rescue, several artisan stalls and Wheels for Heroes from the Princess of Wales Regiment. The fun dog show had double entries of the previous year. Even a rain shower could not dampen spirits, everybody had so much fun.”

Show awards published soon and detailed results will likely be published in October.
