Weald School Meeting

Although still at an early stage, the Governing Body and the Diocese of Guildford have been considering the future of The Weald School building and how we ensure it is fit for purpose for the coming years. Many of you who know the school well, will I am sure agree, that the building itself is in need of a significant overhaul. This would then enable us to continue to meet the needs of our current and future pupils.

We have been communicating with our school trustees, Surrey County Council and Capel Parish Council about possible ways forward. Although there is no firm route just yet, we are all in agreement that consultation with all stakeholders is key at this early stage; so that we can identify the true needs of not only the school community, but also our local community.

The Governing Body is proposing to hold a public exhibition at The Weald in September.  This exhibition would present information as to why the school needs redevelopment and what funding sources could be available to us. We would present a number of different options from refurbishing the building to a full rebuild.  We would be keen to meet with you and receive your feedback on potential options on how the school site could be redeveloped, having regard to known development opportunities and constraints associated.

As part of the potential redevelopment of the school site, we are also keen to provide better indoor and outdoor sporting facilities which could be used by the wider community.  We would also seek to address current site access and transport issues.

The Governing Body recognises that there may be many barriers to any project, not least that the school site is located in the Green Belt. However, as you may also be aware, Mole Valley District Council is currently undertaking a Green Belt review to help identify potential sites for housing development to meet the District’s requirements over the Plan period to 2026. This is something we would also like to explore with you as part of the exhibition in September.

Based on the feedback we receive, if the principle of redevelopment is supported, it is then our intention to identify and produce a proposal for a preferred option. We will inform you before taking this proposal to Mole Valley District Council as part of pre-application discussion with officers.

In summary The Weald School is:

  • A thriving primary school with demand for places increasing
  • A building in need of repair and ultimately replacement
  • A  school sitting on acres of unused land

The benefits of redevelopment could be enormous:

  • A new high quality school which is best able to meet the needs of all of our children for years to come
  • Securing places for our local feeder schools at Year 3
  • Built with finance generated from expendable assets, taking nothing financially from central or local government
  • No impact on the finance of surrounding schools
  • Easing of congestion in the area by making the school more accessible (dedicated drop-off and pick-up area)
  • Additional housing available to meet pressing local needs
  • Dual use facility providing a range of benefits and improved facilities for the wider community

We are very keen to seek your views and ensure that we are meeting the needs of the wider community for many years to come as well as offering the best possible learning environment for our pupils. The date of the meeting will be confirmed and advertised on our website soon; please join us if you can.

Mrs Sharon Davis, Head Teacher.

The Studio ADHD Centre

As you may know, I am the Chairperson of The Studio ADHD Centre, a charity based in Capel. The Studio provides a unique relaxed environment for children and young adults who have Attention Deficit Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. The work of the Centre includes individual counseling sessions for young people, parents, partners and siblings.

Its work sometimes includes crisis intervention and advocacy with child protection, criminal justice and family issues.

As part of the necessary fund raising for the Studio, I will once again be running a tombola stall at this year’s Capel Music Festival and I would welcome any items you can spare. The tombola stall will have all types of prize so anything you are prepared to donate will be most acceptable, absolutely anything.

In addition there will be a raffle and I intent making up a mixed hamper as a prize (mostly food/drink related but nothing ruled in or out), anything that would be suitable to fill that would be most welcome.

Capel Choral Society – Come And Sing

Founded more than 100 years ago, Capel Choral is still going song.

The new 2013/13 seasons starts with first practice on Monday 2nd September at 7:45pm in Capel Memorial Hall, 55 The Street, RH5 5LB, and ever Monday thereafter. This will be with fully compliment of soloists and orchestra.

So if you have always wanted to be part of a major choral work, then why not come along to our first practice, find out what goes on, be in at the start and then hopefully with the performance of the night.

You will be most welcome.

Capel W.I – July

At our recent July meeting Capel WI enjoyed a talk entitled A Butcher’s Tale of Woe given by Keith Weston, who has a butchers shop in Bookham.

Keith started by telling us how, as a boy of 14, with hair, he took up part time work for a £5 wage in a butcher’s shop. He loved his job from day one and under the tutelage of an ugly, huge boss called George (or was that Sweeney?) he began to learn his trade.

Sadly at 15, his family business as newsagents came to an end and his father moved them away to Somerset dragging a very irate Keith with him. Being resourceful (told you he was Sweeney Todd) he wrote to lots of butchers and landed himself a position, only to be thwarted on his first day by contracting shingles!

Keith related many tales of his life as a butcher and the trials and tribulations he had suffered along the way, yet overcome – from the impact of out of town superstores on local tradesmen like himself, (he especially HATES Tesco) to the Mad Cow Disease fiasco, but being determined to carry on selling meat on the bone in the face of prosecution. How he coped with going metric, wading through all the European red tape and attending meat management courses, the horrific Foot and Mouth disease, and the Petrol Drivers’ Strike ( and still he wouldn’t go to Tesco for petrol) is amazing. But through all these adversities, he found solutions, the latter being that without petrol to visit out of town superstores, the public came to his local butcher’s shop, found the quality and the personal service and …… as they say, the rest is history!

The Evergreens

Our June outing was changed from Weymouth to Bognor and on 17th June to the aforementioned on a lovely sunny day. We all had a super day due to the marvelous weather an on the way home we stopped for tea at the newly-restored Roundstones Garden Centre.

On the 24th June we had a tombola in aid of Friends of Capel and raised £100 which has now been sent off to them.

If anyone fees they would care to join us at the Evergreens we would be only happy to see them. If you would like details just give me a ring on 712827 .

Improvements to the Weald School building

a can be seen elsewhere in this edition the Governing Body of the Weald School and the Diocese of Guildford are considering how to ensure that the school building is fit for purpose in the years to come. The Parish Council will be lending its support to the proposals where it is able and it is particularly keen that the redevelopment will aim to provide better indoor and outdoor sporting facilities which could be used by both the school community and the local community.

News From Capel News!

On the 31st July this year the Patel family will have been successfully running Capel News for 25 years. Mr and Mrs Patel and their family have been a constant and integral part of our community life. As soon as you enter the shop you are greeted as a friend and everyone is known by name.

Throughout their time in Capel the Patel family has served the community unstintingly. Nothing has ever seemed to be too much trouble, whatever the request. Papers are delivered and groceries taken at all hours to those who cannot leave home easily.

The Patel family have supported countless local events and donated to village clubs and societies and never sought thanks or praise for their generosity. They have shared our highs and lows and we have shared theirs.

Out village would be a hugely different place without them – so her’s fervently hoping that they will be with us for at least another 25 years!
