Capel War Memorial

Following on from the appeal for help to clean our War Memorial in the June edition of the magazine, I do hope that you have seen the wonderful work that has been done by Shane Williamson, a friend of Doug & Rev. Liz Richardson. Given the time that it had taken me to clean about 10 sq.cm, it is nothing short of miraculous. However, like many other things, if you know what you are doing there is all the difference in the world, and Shawn is not only a stonemason but also a sculptor. He has cleaned both the Memorial itself, and the flagstones so the whole edifice is in a much better state than it has been for a long time. Our grateful thanks to him.

Capel’s Got Talent 2014

After its huge success last year, we are delighted to launch the second annual Capel’s Got Talent night – to be held on Saturday 16th August at the Recreation Ground – and we need your help!

We are not only looking for great acts to be part of the show, but also volunteers who could help out as we prepare as well as on the night.

This year the organisation and running of the CGT is being organised by the Friends of Capel Guiding, and we will be running the event as a fundraiser to help give girls the opportunity to travel and try out new activities.

So what are we looking for/ Firstly, we need helpers on the night to set up, clear away help out on catering and the bar as well as the car parking and clearing up at the end of the evening. To volunteer please contact the CGT team on capelsgottalent@gmail.co.uk

Secondly, we need your acts! Are you a singer, dancer, magician? are you a dab hand at impressions,an amazing ventriloquist or quietly hiding your ability to click-flack and tumble? Whether you’re 10 or 70 we want you to share your talent!

To apply to enter or to volunteer to help on the day please contact the CGT team on capelsgottalent@gmail.co.uk. We’re also up and running on Facebook and Twitter @capelsgottalent.

There is lots join on behind the scenes researching and getting to grips with a design for the New Sports Pavillion. We have started a programme of fundraising. The next event is a Car Wash, which will take place at the club on Saturday 7th June from 10-12. Brign your car along to the Village Hall car park, have it washed for £5 and we will hopefully also be able to share some information with you about our plans and ideas. Refreshments will also be available. Anyone wishing to make a donation can also do so on the day.

Just Say No!

The Airports Commission, chaired by Sir Howard Davies, has included Gatwick Airport in its shortlist for potential locations for the next runway in the UK. Gatwick Airport Limited have produced a consultation paper and 17-page questionnaire about their possible runway options. After considerable pressure they have included a ‘None of these options’ check-box buried in section D.

FACTS

Heathrow is the only airport in the London area running near to maximum capacity. Stansted is only at 40% capacity and not due to reach maximum until 2040. The Government should return to the policy of NO MORE RUNWAYS and not yield to pressure from the airlines. The airlines would then begin to develop holiday services from the regional airports and so free up slots at Heathrow and Gatwick for foreign visitors and business travel.

Gatwick is surrounded by Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty which are nationally protected landscapes valued by numerous visitors for their unique flora, fauna, peace and tranquility. The Surrey Hills reach 1000 feet putting them 35% closer to aircraft above. We are plagued by the noise and pollution caused by aircraft taking-off from Gatwick from 6 am to midnight. This can only get considerably worse.

Global Infrastructure Partners have made no secret that they hope to sell their airport share by 2020. Having permission for a second runway will dramatically increase its value.

SUGGESTIONS

that you can use to object to the second runway option at Gatwick

  • New homes required to meet the demands generated by employment for a new runway and expanded facilities. Approximately 30,000 – 45,000 new houses would be needed around the whole county. This was the conclusion of a study jointly commissioned by the West Sussex CC and Gatwick Diamond Initative.
  • Road and rail infrastructure for the airport. Both are already at breaking point and could not stand the extra pressure caused by the increase in travellers and local residents on the rural and motorway networks.
  • The need for extra school places, hospitals and doctors surgeries to be able to cope with the influx of new residents.
  • The routing proposed for aircraft will only worsen already unacceptable noise and pollution levels.
  • The drainage capacity of the river network created by the new developments will impact further on the Mole Valley.
  • It will certainly spoil our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Capel Village Grand Garage Sale

Have you ever thought of having a garage sale?

Have you thought it might be fun to do one on the same day as many others in Capel?

This scheme works very well in other villages. I would be happy to advertise it on everybody’s behalf for

17th May 2014

I would ask for a donation

£2.00 per household.

The plan would be for you to make money for yourselves, a charity etc. tHe donations, if not all used for the necessary advertising, would be sent to St Catherine’s Hospice. Please let me know asap if you would like to be included on the map of participating properties.

I have room at the front of my house for a few tables if needed.

East Village Book Club

After a summer break we started with a meeting to discuss “Sweet Tooth 11 by lan McEwan, and any other books enjoyed during the lovely weather. Many had read Murder Mysteries and several members now have Kindles which they find a great help for holiday reading.

The next read was “Life after Life 11 by Kate Atkinson and this is now out in paperback. The book is different and challenging but worth a go.

Then on to the late lan Banks “Crow Road”; a good story and only marred for some by the’ back and forward ‘chapters,

December, we had the Douglas Kennedys’ “The woman in the Fifth”,again different, not a total favourite; however there is a DVD of this so we will give that a viewing and see if it has better impact. One opinion was that the dramatisation of “Death comes to Pemberley” had a better “look” than the book, which most had thought very poor.

We move on this year to “The Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hussain and follow it with Galbraith and Rowlings “Cuckoo Calling” a newly published novel.

Its fun to meet and it’s not just about the specific reads, as we recommend other items or swap books and have tea and cake! DOT THORP

Congratulations Mandy Schryver

Congratulations to Mandy Schryver on being awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours! Chairman of our Parish Council, Mandy, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the village. Many congratulations on her very week deserved recognition!

Mandy has served on the Capel Parish Council for 14 years, and has been a tireless Chairman for 7 of these. She gives her time freely to many other aspects of village life, organising the outside events at the Capel Horticultural Society’s Annual Show for the past 20 summers, serving teas and coffees and washing up each month at Flix in the Stix, being a hands-on trustee of Charlotte Broadwood Flats, to name a few. She also performs many unsung kindnesses, cooking several turkeys on Christmas Day for people with no power after the big storm!

The British Empire Medal is awarded for “meritorious service worthy of recognition by the Crown.” It was established in 1922 and awarded to subjects in the UK until 1993 after which it lay in abeyance until Prime Minister David Cameron restored it to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
