The Evergreens – December 2013

14th October saw 39 of us setting off from Capel for Skegness for a short break, and what great time we all had. Lincolnshire may be flat but what lovely little villages it has. We visited Louth a beautiful Georgian Market town, Boston where the main attraction is the Boston Stump and Lincoln who’s magnificent Cathedral is perched on top of a hill, so steep that many of us couldn’t contemplate climbing it. A truly lovely holiday.

We arrived back on the Friday ready to set off on Monday to Duxford. This was a trip that we had booked back in March but due to bad weather we had to postpone. This time however the weather was kinder (it was just bucketing down with rain) . When we arrived in Duxford half were dropped off to visit the Museum and the rest carried on to Cambridge where hopefully we would be able to visit some of the Colleges, which didn’t happen as they were closed to the public. So it meant a little retail therapy. We all had a really wonderful day.

Please note there will no meeting of the Evergreens on Mondays 23rd and 30th December.

Flix In The Stix

Our next film, to be shown on Tuesday 3rd December, is Summer in February. This is aromatic drama set in Cornwall in the early 20th century and focuses on a group of Bohemian artists called the Lamorna Group. The group is at the centre of a real life love triangle and was shot during January and February 2012. As usual, the film will be shown at Capel Village Memorial Hall, starting at 8pm with doors open at 7:30pm. Tickets cost £4 at the door.

The Crown Inn are doing special pre-film meals at £5.50. The choices are Scampi and Chips, Home-made Lasange, salad or Roasted Mediterranean Vegetable Lasagne, Choice of Curry, Ham Double Egg & Chips, or Asparagus & Broadbean Risotto. Please ring to order beforehand.

Capel W.I Meeting 15h October

Our speaker tonight was Jim Cook from Canine Partners, who gave his wonderful talk and an insight into what is achieved by the people who train these fantastic dogs.

Recently, through excellent publicity by the media, their reputation is growing and so it should. We say pictures of the dogs with their happy partners and it really made us think how lucky we are. It was very emotional. We learned of some of the things the dogs are trained to do, from emptying and filling the washing machine, picking up mobile phones, adjusting armrests and foot places on wheelchairs, helping to take off gloves, the list is endless. The dogs are taught to think for themselves and have been known to get help from other family members and neighbors in an emergency.

There are 1.2 million wheelchair users in the UK and Canine Partners just cannot fulfill the demand. Jim told us about their sponsors and the work they do with Help the Heroes.

Jim’s talk was brilliant and we all said we would like to attend one of their information sessions and see the puppies and dogs being trained first hand, so watch out Midhurst, the WI ladies will be visiting very soon!

Scott Broadwood News – November 2013

As I write, we ahve just celebrated Harvest Festival at Scott-Broadwood. I am always amazed by the children’s confidence, speaking so clarly in front of an audience in a large building. For some our our children, who have only been in school for a few weeks, just to stand up and act in front of an audience is a great achievement. This is one of the many advantages for children being in a small school: everyone takes an active part in all our celebrations.

Children at Capel also go to see the Harvest for real, on our annual visit to see the Maize being harvested in the village. The children were a credit to their parents and the school, coping brilliantly with a long walk to watch the harvest and then walking back to school carrying their own crop! These children truly understand where their food comes from.

By the time you read this, we will be busy after half term, having just celebrated Bonfire Night. This is the perfect time for all those of you with young children to come and see the school for yourselves – it’s never too early to start seeing what school will be like when your child is ready to start school. At our Open Mornings, you will be able to see the school in actionm with the usual wide variety of activities and opportunities for all the children.

For those of you who have a child who will have thier 4th birthday between September 1st 2013 and August 31st 2014, you need to apply for your child’s school place by January 15th 2013. Please phone the school to arrange an appointment to come and visit us, or come aloong to our Open Mornings: Tuesday 5th November at Ockley and Wednesday 6th November at Capel. Timings at both bases 9:30 – 11:30am.

Capel Horticultural Society – AGM & Illustrated Talk

Calling all Society members – along with others who might be interested in joining! Do please come along to Capel Memorial Hall for 7pm on Tuesday 12th November. We shall start the evening with a glass of wine and some light bites followed by our Annual General Meeting. With the business out of the way, and our glasses refilled, we are all looking forward to hearing from National Trust Ranger, who will be presenting an illustrated talk on “The Hidden Gems of Leith Hill”. She will talk on the Rhododendron Wood and its plant life as well as the recently opened Leith Hill Place.

So please join us to learn a little more about all that is going on “up the hill”. There is no charge to attend and the evening should be over by 9:15pm.

We look forward to seeing you.

The Evergreens

September 23rd saw us setting off to Buckingham Palace, unfortunately not to have tea with the Queen, but to look around this magnificent Palace and to view the Coronation Robes which were wonderful.

We had a fantastic day and came home feeling very happy.

On September 28th we held our McMillan Coffee morning. Many, many thanks to everyone who helped, who came and contributed, and thanks to Real Coffee for their wonderful coffee. We raised £435.43 our biggest total so far, and thanks to Kath Capsey for organising it.

On 14th October a group of us are off to Skegness for a short break, just hope the weather holds out.

Gatwick Airport

You may have heard Gatwick are asking for consultation and I can’t stres how important this is that you should comment. This is the link http://www.londonairspaceconsultation.co.uk

Enter your postcode and see for yourself!

Please be aware that at present flight paths are shared but what is being proposed is that the chosen routes should only get the constant noise, so this is very worrying.

Those that think they are safe might be unhappy to see the new routes!

Please inform friends and family, as this is very important for this area both from the sky and the land.

Surrey Telecare

What would happen if your mum or dad had a fall at home and no one knew?

With telecare – somebody would.

The falls detector is just one of the many telecare sensors that are available to meet specific needs. This device raises an alarm in the monitoring centre automatically, when movement and impact associated with a fall is detected. The falls detector can be worn on the person’s wrist or on pinned to clothing so it isn’t obtrusive.

Other telecare sensors include a chair/bed sensor, linked smoke detector, gas and carbon monoxide detectors, pill despenser and pendent.

The telecare free trial offer includes a community alarm provided by Surrey’s borough and district councils, as well as additional sensors that may be needed. After 12 weeks, if someone decides to keep the community alarm and telecare sensor, the only cost to be paid, is for the community alarm which is between £4 and £5 a week. The additional sensors are absolutely FREE.

Peace of mind for families, independence for your loved one.

Go to the www.surreytelecare.com to see how the falls detector has made a difference to Margaret!

Capel Music Festival

Dear Readers,

We are delighted to announce that this year’s event raised a fantastic £14,700 which will be split between its chosen charities, St Catherine’s Hospice and The Studio ADHD Centre in Capel. A number of smaller local charities and organisations are also benefiting including Capel Youth Club, the Capel Cricket pavilion and the Amber Foundation in Ockley, Capel Pre-School and the Capel Guides and Scouts groups. The event attracted over 2,000 visitors.

The team are planning to put the event on again next year. It takes a lot of organisation so with more people involve it would mean the workload could be spread. We are looking for volunteers to join the CMF team for the festival August 2013. We require a number of roles such as gathering sponsors, preparing food and putting up signs. Please consider offering a few hours of help before the event, or on the day. Please contact Emma Jaques on 077415 475779, ekejaques@yahoo.co.uk .

Thank you!!
