C.A.P.E.L Community Orchards

Promoted by the possibility of establishing and maintaining a small community orchard at the Friends Meeting House, Capel, a formal group, with a Constitution, has been set up with the aim of planting suitable trees during the winter. Hopefully, the Friends’ Trustees will meet to confirm this on November 2nd, when we may also receive a grant towards the cost of buying the trees. We can then plan our steps, i.e. choosing and planting the trees.

In due course the group would wish to engage in activities of a similar nature, supporting other community orchards locally, and other related activities. We hope to keep readers informed of our progress and, in the meantime, please contact Phil Partridge, Secretary if you would like further details.

Gatwick News

In addition to the possibility of a second runway, Gatwick Airport Ltd, and National Air Traffic Services have jointly published proposals for a major revamp of the flight paths into and out of Gatwick. These plans could have a serious adverse effect on our area. The consultation documents are available at: http:///www.londonairspaceconsultation.co.uk/?page_id=37 . The consultation ends on 21st January 2013 and the Parish Council will be working on a drag response to meet that deadline. This consultation is in the form of seven large documents with thirteen appendices – so just view it on line! With members in all areas around the airport, GACC ( Gatwick Airport Conservation Campaign) has a firm and long established policy of not supporting or opposing proposals to move aircraft noise from one community to another therefore although they will be responding it will be in general terms. Should you sit to say why aircraft should not fly over our local area you must respond directly yourself.

The Parish Council has submitted a document ‘Representations in relation to an expansion at Gatwick and Heathrow Airports.’ This has been distributed to the Airports Commission, BAA Heathrow, Gatwick Airport Ltd, GACC, GATCOM, SCC, MVDC and others. A copy can be found at www.capelvillage.co.uk.

The Children’s Society – Coffee Morning 2nd November

The Children’s Society in Capel
Coffee Morning in St John the Baptist Capel, Saturday 2ndNovember 10 am – 12noon

Dear friends and neighbours,

I have recently taken over from Rita Ball as the St John the Baptist Capel co-ordinator for The Children’s Society.  Rita has done stirling work for the Society over many years, tirelessly fundraising every year.  I’m sure many of you would like to join me in thanking her for all the hard work and wish her well in whatever she does next!  In 2012/13 alone, supporters raised a magnificent sum of £23.7million for vulnerable children and young people.  The Society’s main fundraising activity which most of you will be familiar with is the Christingle Service collection.  However, the Society needs your help to raise money every day of the year, not just at Christingle.  You can help all year round by having a box in your home or work place.  You’d be surprised how quickly the donations add up!  Even just the loose change from your pocket added every now and again, can soon add up and every little helps!  The Society has been established since 1881 and has from the outset worked with the most disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.  In the past 25 years they have probably become best known for their work with runaways, but they do far more than that.  It includes helping Children in Care, Children at risk of sexual exploitation, Young refugees and Young runaways.

As the start of my fundraising activities, I would like to invite all those who already hold collection boxes for The Children’s Society and anyone else who would like to join me, for a Coffee morning and Bring and Buy Sale at St John the Baptist, Capel on Saturday 2nd November between 10am and 12 noon.  There will be refreshments and delicious homemade cakes and biscuits available and a chance to meet other local supporters.  I will also be selling the Fairtrade ‘Real Advent Calendar’ and christmas cards and gift ideas from the Society.

If you would like to know more about the Society and its valuable work, you can find out more on their website:  www.childrenssociety.org.uk  and if you are interested in having a collection box all year round, please do let me know by either phoning me on  01306 711449 or via email on:  slc@ansford.me.uk     Please bring any unwanted ‘as good as new’  items that you wish to Bring and Buy to the venue and between us, I hope we can enjoy a social time together, with the added bonus of raising money for a very worthy charity.  Thank you and I look forward to seeing you on 2nd November.

Best wishes

Suzanne Cole
