Burns Night 2016

Turns out there’s no such thing as “Dry January” in Capel as the village hall filled with party-goers  to celebrate Burns Night! Plenty of Haggis and whiskey was consumed which contributed to much highland fling. Huge thanks to the Soul Katz and “The  band with  no name, aka local residents Phil, Julia, Chris, Noel  and Tim with  their  special guest Clay, who provided  wonderful music and entertainment. Very special thanks to Claire and Paul Churchouse, Tiffany Dowling and

Mark Sugden-Best who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and finally to my wonderful Mums; Barbara and Jan who worked so hard in the kitchen. We  raised a fantastic £570 for Capel Pre School which is being spent on new resources  including new chairs for our youngest children.

Way back in October we visited the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners and we were so impressed with  our visit that we invited our guide to come and speak to us

at one of our meetings.  So it came about that Brian Cumming  visited us on the 8th February and as we were having one of our lunches that day we invited him to join us. We  had such an enjoyable day, with  him giving a great talk with   accompanying slides.   We  learned so much about the Chelsea Pensioners and their lives at the Royal Hospital.

This month  we start our trips, the first one being a coastal trip  and a visit to a Garden Centre, then in

April about 30 of us are off to Ireland for a few days.

Congratulations Capel!

Dozens of Capel residents turned  out on a bitterly cold Saturday morning (5th March) to help .. Clean for the Queen… Organised by Capel Horticultural Society, Scouts  and Brownies  joined villagers to collect a staggering amount of litter  from surrounding roads, ditches  and pathways. At the last count more than 56 bags were filled with rubbish – a huge thank you to everybody who found the time to join in and make such a difference to the village.

Capel Assist

As  reported  previously,  a  neighbourly   support   scheme  for   and  by  the  residents  of  Capel  and surrounding  area has been set up called Capel Assist.  The launch date is 4th April, 2016.   It is a group of local volunteers  who  want to help those within and near Capel by providing  assistance and services to those who require  them, such as:

  • Providing transport to and from doctors, hospital, dentist, veterinary, etc.
  • Helping in the home (however not cleaning)
  • Home visits
  • Other similar services.

Those wishing to make use of this service should telephone 07593 714 513.  The person on duty will arrange for  a volunteer  to  provide  the required  assistance if possible and practical.   Calls should be made as early as possible in advance in order  to arrange assistance; ideally 48 hours minimum.   The cost of the call will be to a mobile phone, only charges made by the caller’s own service provider may apply.

Car journeys will involve a voluntary  donation to cover the cost of the driver’s  petrol and car parking (if required). When  arranging for  the service, the caller will be informed  of the suggested donation  at that time.

The scheme is open to adults only.  Any minors requiring transport must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Capel Assist will provide  support  to those who are residents in the Village of Capel and the immediate surrounding area.  The approximate area covered will  be north  to  the Beare Green roundabout, east to Trig Street, west to Ockley Station and south to the boundary with West  Sussex.

Capel Assist has been set up with the advice of Surrey County  Council.

Capel Assist is co-ordinated by and entirely  dependant upon the dedication of the many volunteers.

For further  details, queries or  offers of help please contact  the Capel Assist Committee on the same number as listed above 07593-714513.

East Village Book Club

Several people have asked what we have read recently so I have listed this season’s choices. Each person who hosts the meeting selects our next read. We started with the Inspector  Montalbano books- a different  one each. These had been given by the generous friend Trice. This is a recent popular TV series written by Andrea Camilleri.

Then

“A God in Ruins”  by Kate Atkinson

11Brooklyn ” by Colm Toibin

“The Bees” by Lilane Paull

“The night rainbow”  by Claire King, and currently  we are reading

“The con juror’s bird by Martin  Davis

We will choose one more then have the summer break. Opinions on some were varied but all liked Kate Atkinson  again, she is always good.

Brooklyn did not excite us; we think the film will be better  as the story is interesting but needs vision maybe? The Bees is a different  sort of experience and is one of the good things about varied choices it leads us to go outside our comfort zone. The night rainbow  was again different  but good. There is a discussion on the items but we also put the world to rights and reminisce a bit

So as they used to say on that advert, “it’s good to talk”. DOT  THORP

Parish Council Notes for April

The new Capel Parish Office and Community Hall are now open and ready for use.  If you would like to book the Hall, please call Hall Bookings on 01306 71 1292.

The Annual Residents Meeting took  place in the new Parish Community Hall and was very well attended on Monday  14 March. The Chairman of the Parish Council gave her report on the year’s activities and thanked everyone who had contributed to refurbishment of the building as well as all the other activities within  the Parish during the year, including all the Parish Councillors, the Clerks, the community volunteers, as well as all those involved in helping with the Neighbourhood Development Plan. There followed  an update on the Henry Smith Charity  voucher scheme and a report about

Capel Assist which is being set up by volunteers to help people get to hospital and doctors

appointments when they cannot drive themselves. A short report on crime statistics for the year was given by the local PCSO and an explanation about organisational changes from  I April.   An update about Capel Youth Club was given and it is hoped this will start again very soon when enough youth workers  and volunteers  have come forward. A plea was made for more  volunteers  to help with a few hours occasionally so that the Youth Club can start up again as soon as possible.

Capel Choral Society – Leith Hill Festival

Capel Choral Society is now into the last couple of rehearsals before its big day at the Leith Hill Musical Festival on 14th April. The Choir,  small in number compared with  some of its rivals in the morning Competitions, is making the most of the set music which this year suits a fairly small choir. To this end the Conductor, Peter Ford, has been working the singers hard, concentrating on dynamics, expression and diction. The Haydn Harmoniemesse (‘Wind band mass’) was written for a church

choir, while the other  full scale work,  the Serenade to music by Vaughan Williams  was written for  just

16 soloists, in honour  of Sir Henry  Wood’s 50 years as a conductor.

The other, smaller, works  on which the Choir  is working  also have to be sung in the Competitions and these also suit a smaller choir, so a similar amount of effort  is being dedicated to these pieces each of which forms one of the Classes in the Competitions: Part Song, Madrigal, Ladies’ Song, Men’s Song, Ensemble (for groups of up to  12 singers) and an own Choice piece. The Part Song is actually a group of three folk songs by the Hungarian composer  Matyas Seiber, which are about some rather  strange goings-on in a Hungarian village! The Madrigal is All creatures now, by John Bennett, and is one of

many ‘Oriana’ madrigals in praise of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Men’s Song is a setting of Newbolt’s The Old Superb by Stanford – ‘Westward Ho to Trinidad, and Eastward Ho to Spain!’.

The Choir  will be getting rather  nervous as 14th April approaches, but also looking forward  to this great occasion of music making, although with some sadness too as it bids farewell to Brain Kay, the Festival Conductor of the last 21 years.

It is not too late to book tickets for the first two  nights of the Festival, but the last night (16th April)

which includes a performance  of Verdi’s dramatic Requiem is now sold out.  You can order  tickets through Capel Choral Society’s Ticket Secretary, Yvonne Allmond- contact her on 01403 269884, or ernail yvonneallmond@aol.com .

For more information about Capel Choral Society and how to  join, contact the Secretary, lan Moir at ianmoir20@yahoo.com or phone him on 01306 889817
