Capel Horticultural Society – AGM & Illustrated Talk

Annual General Meeting & Illustrated Talk – Tuesday 12th November

Calling all Society members – along with others who might be interested in joining! Do please come along to Capel Memorial Hall for 7pm on Tuesday 12th November. We shall start the evening with a glass of wine and some light bites followed by our Annual General Meeting. With the business out of the way, and our glasses refilled, we are all looking forward to hearing from National Trust Ranger, Ruby Cole, who will be presenting an illustrated talk on “The Hidden Gems of Leith Hill”. Ruby will talk on the Rhododendron Wood and its plant life as well as the recently opened Leith Hill Place.

So please join us to learn a little more about all that is going on “up the hill”. There is no charge to attend and the evening should be over by 9:15pm.

Capel Military Vehicle Show

The Inaugural East Surrey and West Kent Military Vehicle Show was held over the weekend of 7-8 July this summer. The event was a great success, raising a considerable amount in support of the Help For Heroes charity (just over one thousand pounds). I would like to pass on the thanks and appreciation from the organising committee to the local residents of the village for both their support and patience.

Hopefully any disruption was minimal and the feedback we have received was very positive.

Next year’s Show is scheduled to take place on the weekend of the 5-6 July 2014 and we are planning to build on this year’s success. We look forward to seeing you at the show and welcome your continued support.

Second Runway At Gatwick

CPRE Surrey, CPRE Sussex and the Gatwick Area Conservation Campaign are holding a Seminar on Friday, 25th October 2013 at the Stanhill COurt Hotel, Stan Hill, Charlwood RH6 0EP from 9:30am til 1:00pm followed by lunch (£12 per ticket). The seminar will be followed by the GACC Annual Meeting. Local MP’s, District and Borough Councillors will be attending together with Council Chief Executives and planning officers, Parish Councillors and members of CPRE.

Speakers will include Rt. Hon Francis Maude MP for Horsham, Tim Johnson, Director of the Aviation Environment Federation and Tim Harold, Chair of Surrey CPRE Aviation Group.

This is an important and high profile seminar on the future of Gatwick. If you are interested in the effect of a second runway at Gatwick is likely to have on the local community in the future please attend.

Flix In The Stix – Capel’s Cinematic Experience

Our October Film is “The Paperboy.” Based on the 1995 novel by American author Pete Dexter about an idealistic reporter Ward Jensen and his brother Jack, who set out to investigate a murder and the surrounding events, in an effort to exonerate Van Wetter, a man on death row. Then Jensens are helped by Ward’s colleague Yardley Acheman and Charlotte Bless. Warn and Yardley are investigative reporters on the Miami Times, who feel if the can prove Van Wetter is the victim of redneck justice their story will greatly benefit themselves. Who is the Paperboy? Come along and find out on Tuesday, 1st October at Capel Memorial Hall. Doors open 7:30pm for 8:00pm start. Pre-film and interval refreshments available. Admission £4.00. Everyone welcome.

Cycle Races

Surrey County Council has been busy working on the feedback from all the local Cycling Forums held throughout the summer and has prepared ‘The draft Surrey Transport Plan Cycling Strategy 2014-2026.’ in all there are nine documents which can be found at: www.surrey.cc.gov.uk/cyclingstrategy . The consultation continues through until 1st November and SCC are very keen to have as many responses as possible from the different communities, particularly if you are or your business have been affected positively or negatively by any of the cycle races this summer of by all the increased cycling activity locally.

The Capel and Ockley 2014 Pantomime!

“Captain Hook’s Revenge”

Preparation for the forthcoming production is now under way. Rehearsals start in November with the performance over two successive weekends in late January 2014 with three performances in each village.

We are on the lookout for the team members that will make this a success.

To get involved, you need to attend the Planning/Read Through meeting which will be held at CAPEL VILLAGE MEMORIAL HALL on Sunday 13th October either at 2.00 pm or 3.00 pm (see below as to which time to attend).

Actors will be required to commit to the full rehearsal schedule, which start in early November and will take place on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings. Dance rehearsals will start slightly later in the month and will be on Sundays.

We especially are on the lookout for male actors as well as a female actor to take the part of ‘Peter Pan’. This actress is likely to be aged late teens/early 20s and ‘boyish’ looks would be an advantage.

Obviously we need actors but equally there are as many people off stage as there are on stage. If you can help with any of the following then we’d love to hear from you:

Dancers , Choreographer’s Assistant, Musicians/Musical Director, Technicians (sound and lighting), Front of House, Make up, Catering, Wardrobe/costume, Scenic designers/builders/helpers.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, why not join us for a cup of tea when we meet to assemble the team. For potential dancers and anyone interested in a NON ACTING ROLE, please come along at 2pm on Sunday 13th October (no more than an hour), for ACTING ROLES, a full read-through of the script will take place at 3pm (approx. two hours) and parts will be allocated soon afterwards. Capel Choral Society – Come And Sing

Founded more than 100 years ago, Capel Choral s still going song.

The new 2013/14 season starts with first practice on Monday 2nd September at 7:45pm in Capel Memorial Hall, 55 The Street, RH5 5LB, and every Monday thereafter. This year we are particularly excited about the forthcoming performance of Messiah on Saturday 23rd November 7:30pm at Mary Magdalene Church, South Holmwood. This will be with full compliment of soloists and orchestra. So if you have always wanted to be part of a major choral work, then why not come along to our first practice, find out what goes on, be in at the start and then hopefully with the performances on the night. You will be most welcome. Alternatively, if you have always wanted to hear the whole complete work then put the date in your diary now – watch out for further details nearer the time. The Evergreens – September 13

Our trip to Althorp on the 15th July was a truly wonderful experience and must ahve been the best tip we have had for quite a time. Several members comments were “how do we top that?” Our driver was very good, avoiding all the heavy traffic on the way home. All in a great day out!

On a more sad note we lost one of our very dear Evergreens – Olive Touzel who died on the 16th July and whose funeral service was held in Capel Village Church on 30th July. She was one of the founder members of the Evergreens and was our Treasurer for many years. She will be sadly missed.

News From Scott-Broadwood C of E Infant School – September 13

We start the new academic year by welcoming new members of staff to our school community. Mrs Dowse joins us as Senior Teach at Ockley, Ms Redsell joins us as Senior Scool Assistant, also at Ockley. Both Mrs Dowse and Ms Redsell visited the school several times during the Summer Term, and we are all looking forward to getting to know them better in the new term. The children have all met Mrs Dowse on several occasions and our new Reception children at Ockley have all enjoyed their induction visits with Mrs Dowse.

The children will be learning about ‘people who help us’ as their topic for the first half of term, so we will be out and about in the villages finding out who helps us and what they do. If you volunteer for anything or help other people, you might find yourself being asked questions by our children in the weeks ahead.

During this year, all our children will take part in Forest School afternoons with Miss Myers, who has now completed her training. We are really looking forward to using our local environment to enhance the children’s learning and help them to understand how to lear and play in local outdoor places safely. Children develop new friendships in a different environment and improve their self-confidence by using skills in a different way.

For those of you have a child who will have their 4th birthday between September 1st 203 and August 31st 2014, now is the time to come and visit us to find out more about the children’s learning and opportunities at Scott-Broadwood. Please phone the school to arrange an appointment, or come along to our Open Mornings: Tuesday, 5th November at Ockley and Wednesday, 6th November at Capel. Timings at both bases 9:30 – 11:30pm.
