Capel Pre-School are holding another Autumn Party after last year’s success to raise money for the Pre-School.
For more information please view the poster below.
The stewards of the Capel Horticultural Society wish to thank Coffee Real for once again generously providing their excellent freshly ground, freshly brewed coffee on the morning of the show. We have come to depend on it because it wakes us up after the early start and provides a welcome break, coming as it does before the rush of exhibitors anxious to beat the 10am deadline. The aroma of the coffee alone is enough to refresh us in time for the judging to commence. The taste is delicious and is much appreciated by everyone. I firmly believe that the provision of such good coffee is a significant factor in the coming together of the stewards to form a cohesive team. There is nothing like fathering around a steaming coffee pot or in our case two large coffee dispensers to add to the friendliness of the atmosphere and the enjoyment of the event. The stewards work very hard, it is a long morning, they deserve the best. Coffee Real provides just that. I hope we shall be back again next year for another cup!

Many thanks to all Capel and district, friends and neighbours, for helping to make the stall, in aid of the Royal Marsden Hospital, such a success at this year’s summer show. The bottles supplied made for a very interesting and exciting display, which had queues, of would be winners’ the minute the show was open. How lucky we were to have the charming Bob Champion to assist in handing out the prizes? Thanks also to friends who helped with the “donkey work” erecting the stable, together with hay nets and matching floral arrangements. The jockeys cajoling people to “have a go” where a colourful sight which, together with the pantomime horse, all added to the jollity. When we receive the outstanding promised donations, we should be able to had over £1,00 to help “The Marsden” continue their wonderful work.
Bless you Love Sally.
PS – Since writing this I have received donations over and above the £1,000 I was working toward.
Many thanks to everyone who supported my Charity Bric-A-Brac Stall this year at the Ockley and Capel flower shows. We were thankfully blessed with good weather, and it was lovely as always to catch up with old friends.
Over the two weekends, we raised a total of £450, which will be split between Family Support Work, a charity run by local churches to support vulnerable families across Sussex, and the restoration fund for Okewood Church.
Thanks again for your help and support – I couldn’t do it without your generous donations.

Horsham Active Woodland Trust (HAWT) is a locally based Charity formed to conserve, restore and maintain in a traditional manner ancient woodland sites in the Horsham area. Currently we operate across three sites, Rome Woods and Northlands Wood on the Surrey/Sussex border to the south of Capel and Sheephovel Woods at Mannings Heath near Horsham.
We are involved in a long term management plan devised with support of the Forestry Commission to manage the woodland in a sustainable programme of continuous forestry cover promoting growth of quality timber and producing woodfuel logs and other wood products. Work involves coppicing – a very effective method of producing fast growing sustainable timber without the need for replanting. Maintenance of rides, tracks within the woods, that are cleared within a set timeframe to allow additional light to reach the ground which enhances the biodiversity of wildlife. Clearance of rhododendron which if left untreated and can overtake the natural habitat of ancient woodland.
One of the charity’s aims is to encourage local community involvement via sporting and recreational activities. Whilst at the moment there are no facilities present on the sites, if your club or society could have use of the woodland please call or email Tim for a chat. September has flown by. Our Reception and Year 3 pupils, along with 5 staff are no longer new, but are now fully settled into Weald life. Our Year 6 pupils have had a fantastic outdoor activity week up at the JCA base in Shropshire, where they gained a lot in both experiences and developing their confidence and friendships. They really were an absolute pleasure to be away with.
We have also had our School Exhibition where we presented the background and our thoughts on our school building. Thank you for those of you who joined us and shared your responses and ideas too. all this information is being collated and we are currently looking at whether there is a clear way forward for solving our problems. Once complete, this information will be shared withe very one, but do keep an eye on our website where we have a page dedicated to this project and we aim to keep you up to date on any results and progress.
This month we have our Harvest Festival in school, our Year 4 pupils are off for a 3 night Viking experience in Dorset, our Year 1 and 2 Pupils are off to the Florence Nightingale Museum and our Upper Juniors are all taking part in cycling safety sessions.
We also have Citizens Advice Bureau based here at the school each month this term. Between 2:30pm and 4pm on October 1st, November 5th and December 4th there is a drop-in session for anyone living or working in the local area as well as the school community. On a very cold and wet night many of our members ventured out to hear Janet Mannings give us a talk and a demonstration on a subject very close to our hearts – CHOCOLATE!!
We all listened avidly to Janet tell us about the various types of chocolate available for cooking and how they made up and their ingredients. Good milk chocolate is favoured by the British but on the Continent the bitter, dark chocolate is popular, although, we are being encourage to eat this type which is now deemed good for us. We were told how Swiss Chocolate is made over a 7 day period. How white chocolate is not really chocolate and while we listened to this Christine was busy making chocolate ganache, sweets, a chocolate sauce to pour over fruit which makes a wonderful dessert to server at a dinner party and a scrummy millefeuille. We were then asked to sample these lovely cakes and deserts and very delicious they were too. Fully sustained we all went back into the cold dark night.

The Last Horse Drawn Boat in the South East!
On a perfect summer’s afternoon in early August Capel WI embarked on the ‘Adventure of a Lifetime.’ About 40 of us met at Godalming Wharf and were privileged to be able to board the Iona, a vintage packet boat. We were given a short introduction to the boat’s history together with the necessary safety precautions. Perhaps the most startling piece of information was that it had been build by Harland and Wolff in 1935 …. the very company who had been commissioned to build The Titanic!!!! No worries there then ……
We were assured that Buddy, the Clydesdale horse who would be pulling us would not be overburdened with the load. Indeed, it had been easily pulled by the owner’s small daughter so Buddy was in no danger of over-exertion. Buddy was a stunning creature, huge with enormous feathered hooves and a long plaited tail. He was content to be led along by a long rope and stopped often to sample the delights of the hedgerows and tasty riverbank treats along the way. Occasionally the rope went in the water as he lowered his head to sample some mysterious morsel – resulting in some of us being treated to a sudden shower.
The journey along The River Wey was delightful. We waved happily to other boats on the river one of which was festooned with balloons as its navigator was celebrating his 70th birthday. The scenery was beautiful, late summer flowers grew along the riverbanks and there were many birds and butterfiles.
Of course the highlight (this is Capel WI and our trusty readers will know that we enjoy our food) was the cream tea. it was delicious and enjoyed by everyone. Even the tea was good-I feared it might be in a plastic cup and reminiscent of dish water but it was not. We were treated to real cups and saucers and excellent Yorshire Tea……. ‘Eee by heck it were grand.’
Thankfully, Hatland and Wolfff had obviously learned from their mistakes with The Titanic and all too soon our journey was over and we were safely back in Godalming. As we gathered on the riverbank for a photo opportunity, we had all enjoyed a brilliant afternoon.
Our grateful thanks to Rosemary for organising it.

The Inaugural East Surrey and West Kent Military Vehicle Show was held over the weekend of 7-8 July this summer. The event was a great success, raising a considerable amount in support of the Help For Heroes charity (just over one thousand pounds). I would like to pass on the thanks and appreciation from the organising committee to the local residents of the village for both their support and patience.
Hopefully any disruption was minimal and the feedback we have received was very positive.
Next year’s Show is scheduled to take place on the weekend of the 5-6 July 2014 and we are planning to build on this year’s success. We look forward to seeing you at the show and welcome your continued support.
