Cycle Races

A number of local forums have taken place in and around Abinger to receive feedback on how the Prudential RideLondon cycle race on August 4th affected residents and businesses. This information, particularly the effect of road closures, will be fed back to Surrey County Council and the race organisers. Please send your comments to Rebecca Hutchinson (PA to the CEO of Mole Valley District Council) email; Rebecca.Hutchinson@molevalley.gov.uk .

Capel News Party! – Sunday the 11th August 2013

In 1988 Suryakant Patel brought his family to Capel, purchasing the Capel Newsagents. For the last 25 years the Patels’ especially Mukesh have kept the shop open 365 days of the year, seven days a week from dawn to dusk. They make deliveries to the housebound in the village and surrounding area. They run a Christmas raffle, the proceeds of which go to the local primary school. And they are always ready to help with a gift for a charitable event in the village. They have been a backbone in maintaining one of the only two retail outlets now in the village.

It was not the villagers who threw the party to celebrate their 25th anniversary but the Patel family itself. They provided a magnificent curry lunch, an abundance of drinks and tea in the afternoon, all on a lovely sunny day under a marquee and gazebos on the car park adjacent to their shop. They entertained 500 people who over spilt into the adjacent Friend Meeting House garden.

We are most fortunate that Suryakant, born in Kenya, 75 years ago, has with his family become so much a part of Capel. We thank them for their friendliness, kindness and their generosity especially on the 11th August. We hope they will be part of us for many years to come. JRA

Mr Patel & Family – would like thank everyone who attended our 25 year Celebration Party and making it such a wonderful occasion. Without you all this would not have been possible. Once again thank you for your wonderful support for all these years.

The Studio ADHD Centre

As you may know, I am the Chairperson of The Studio ADHD Centre, a charity based in Capel. The Studio provides a unique relaxed environment for children and young adults who have Attention Deficit Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. The work of the Centre includes individual counseling sessions for young people, parents, partners and siblings.

Its work sometimes includes crisis intervention and advocacy with child protection, criminal justice and family issues.

As part of the necessary fund raising for the Studio, I will once again be running a tombola stall at this year’s Capel Music Festival and I would welcome any items you can spare. The tombola stall will have all types of prize so anything you are prepared to donate will be most acceptable, absolutely anything.

In addition there will be a raffle and I intent making up a mixed hamper as a prize (mostly food/drink related but nothing ruled in or out), anything that would be suitable to fill that would be most welcome.

Capel Choral Society – Come And Sing

Founded more than 100 years ago, Capel Choral is still going song.

The new 2013/13 seasons starts with first practice on Monday 2nd September at 7:45pm in Capel Memorial Hall, 55 The Street, RH5 5LB, and ever Monday thereafter. This year we are particularly excited about the forthcoming performance of MESSIAH on Saturday 23rd November 7:30pm at St Mary Magdalene Church, South Holmwood. This will be with fully compliment of soloists and orchestra.

So if you have always wanted to be part of a major choral work, then why not come along to our first practice, find out what goes on, be in at the start and then hopefully with the performance of the night.

You will be most welcome.

Alternatively, if you have always wanted to hear the whole complete work then put the date in your diary now – watch out for further details nearer the time. We look forward to seeing you.

The Evergreens

Our June outing was changed from Weymouth to Bognor and on 17th June to the aforementioned on a lovely sunny day. We all had a super day due to the marvelous weather an on the way home we stopped for tea at the newly-restored Roundstones Garden Centre.

On the 24th June we had a tombola in aid of Friends of Capel and raised £100 which has now been sent off to them.

If anyone fees they would care to join us at the Evergreens we would be only happy to see them. If you would like details just give me a ring on 712827 .

Cycle Races

The Vachery Triathlon is the first of this summer’s cycle races, being staged on Sunday 21st July. It is a commercial event rather than an Olympic Legacy race. Many people complained about the number and length of the proposed road closures and as a result these have been dramatically reduced but there will still be some roads with restricted access – these will be re-opened by 2:00pm. Detailed maps of the routes are available at www.gosurrey.info and the organisers have said they will be doing a mail drop to domestic and business premises in the area by July 1st 2013.

The prudential Ride London cycle race takes place through the county on Sunday August 4th when roads will close in the early hours of the morning and will stay closed until early evening – similar to last year’s Olympic race.

The tour of Britain returns on Saturday 21st September when Surrey will host the penultimate stage. Some of the world’s best cyclists will start the race in Epsom and will head through Leatherhead, Dorking, Cranleigh, Woking, Elstead and Farnham. There will be a re-run of the sprint up Guildford High Street to the finish. This will only involve rolling road closures.
