Hyde Park on Hudson

In June 1939, King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth, made a visit to the United States, during which they stayed at President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s country estate in Hyde Park, New York.  At the same time, the President was growing closer to his sixth cousin and suspected mistress, Margaret (Daisy) Suckley.   Roosevelt hoped he could use the visit to, in part, to bolster American support for the United Kingdom on the eve of World War II, which broke out less than three months later.

Hyde Park on Hudson is a 2012 British biographical historical comedy drama directed by Roger Michell. The film stars Bill Murray and Laura Linney as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, respectively. It was based on Suckley’s private journals and diaries, discovered after her death, about her love affair with and intimate details about President Roosevelt.

As usual, doors will open at 7.30 pm for a show at 8 pm in Capel Village Memorial Hall.  Tickets sold on the door are still only £4.00.  We look forward to seeing you then.

Gatwick Aiport

Gatwick Airport Ltd (GAL) has recently formally told the Airports Commission that it Wishes to build a second runway;

Has said that it is concentrating on the area between the airport and Crawley;

Has announced that it is examining a close parallel runway. ora staggered runway, or a Wide-spaced runway;

Has told Parliament that it envisages Gatwick ultimately becoming larger than Heathrow;

Has allocated £10 million in the next two years to develop its runway plans;

Has commissioned two high-powered London PR companies to sell the runway plans nationally and locally.

The Commission, which has the task of deciding whether the UK needs a bigger hub airport, and whether a new runway is needed in South East England, is proceeding methodically and has set Out its programme leading up to its final report in summer 2015.

Outline plans for new runways have to be submitted to the Commission by 19 July 201 3. GAL has promised to consult ‘stakeholders’ on their new runway plans but itis not yet known whether this will be before or after submitting them. There will also be an opportunity for comments. on the plans to be sent direct to the Commission. Later this year there are due to be more discussion documents on hub airports. and on the environment.

In December the Commission is required to produce an interim report. Thls will contain proposals for short-termactlcn to improve capacity of existing runways. It wit! also contain a short-list of proposals for new runways to be taken forward for firrtherconslderaticntn 2014.

It is probable that on the list will be: a new runway (or runways) at Heathrow, a new runway at Gatwick.a new runway at Stansted, and a new airport in the Thames Estuary. At Heathrow new proposals have recently been put forward for extendIng the airport westwards over the M25. During the course of 20 14 the Commission will be assessing the merits and demerits of each of the sites on the short-list. Local authorities will need to ensure that an the facts available to the Commission are up-to-date. For example. Crawley will need to remind them of the 2,000 new houses being built close to the end of a possible runway.

There is no sign that the Commission is intending to seek the views of the public or of local councils on the broad issue of whether they are for or against a new runway. But the county and district councils around Gatwick may wish to undertake research. either individually or jointly. into speciflc aspects. For example:

  • whether the new flight paths would go over Horsharn; or over Dorking, or over Reigate. or over East Grinstead;
  • what would be the impact of 40.000 neW jobs in the Gatwick area? i + what would be the impact on housing. schools and hospitals?
  • could the local roads cope?
  • how much countryside would be left?

Finally, in summer 2015 after the next election, the Commission is due to produce its recornrnendatlons for when and where new runways shou.ld be built. When (before July 19) GAL produce their plans for possible locations for a new runway at Gatwick they will invite the views of local councils. The Parish Council has it on good authority that should a second runway be built between the Airport and Crawley the amount of air traffic noise experienced over Capel would double over what it is today.

Vachery Triathlon Festival – Sunday 21st July

The Parish Council has written to Surrey County Council to convey its concerns regarding the planned road closures for this event.and asking that it rescind its closure declsions. The organisers plan to close roads on the cycle route for eight hours (between 6am and 2pm). The Parish Council is pointing out that the Vachery Triathion is a private, profit-making enterprise which will be making commercial gain at the expense of local businesses along the route and on the feeder roads leading to the loss of essential summer weekend trade and drastically affecting the sustainability of those businesses. The roads in question include parts of Bognor Road (A29); Lake Road, Ockley; Leith Hill Road; Etherley Hill; and many of the feeder roads on to the A29. For the full details of the road closures please see www.vacherytriathlon.com

Parish Councillors consider that the event should be run on the same lines as the two Ride London races to be held on August 3rdand 4th and the Tour of Britain race on Saturday 21st September where the vast majority of theraces will be delivered under a temporary ‘rolling closure’ enforced by police and the National Escort Group closing the roads as the race approaches and opening again once the cyclists have left the area.

CAPEL W.I. – Coco’s Foundation – Chris Connors

The Village Hall was packed for this evening’s meeting with ladies who had all come to hear this Inspirational young man tell us all about the foundation he has established. Chris left school at IS after struggling with dyslexia and after a lot of persuading from his Mum, he trained to be a hairdresser. He now owns 3 salons, a training school and has 47 employees. Plus he has this wonderful foundation to run. How good is that?

One of his team members, Ed, told him one day, that he would like to work with children in

Africa. ‘OK’ said Chris, ‘lets do it’. Before long, and accompanied by his team and 100 teddies. knitted by ‘Knitting Nannies’, they arrived in a little village near Mozambique. Over the next 3 weeks they set to and built a fully-equipped orphanage for 19 children who were suffering from HIV Or Aids. He visited very sick children in the local hospital, which was a very emotional experience, we were told, and the teddies were a great success with the little patients!

Chris then returned to the UK knowing his time there had changed his life, so he did decided to set up the COCO’S. Company and he has never looked back. He told us that he has been back-several times when he and his teams have built amongst other things. a reservoir, and a vegetable garden and, of Course, they spend time with the children, which they love. He told us many little tales about these lovely children and we were all very humbled by it all.

South Africa then decided to dose down the homes, and the orphanage built by the Foundation is now a community centre, so COCO’S are now building houses for child-headed families and providing food, education and giving love to these little people.

What an incredible evening and an incredible young man.

Capel Horticultural Society – Capel Spring Show A Great Success

The CapeI Spring Show was held on Sunday 7th April in the Memorial Hall Finally the weather was a bit more spring like and lots of good entries were put In, especially well supported were the children’s and homecraft sections. Exhibits of daffodils and spring flowers were down, as expected, but none the less made a good showing. Refreshments of tea. coffee and delicious cakes were supervised by Handy Schryver and helpers, with a record amount being donated. After Dr John Ashwood, President of the Society, had presented the cups to the winners, a special presentation was made to Fran Wright who is retiring this year. She has been a loyal supporter of the Horticultural Society and took responsibility for keeping aH the table cloths (over 300′ in length) and the hundred or so plates dean and ready for all the shows over the past 19 years. We wish her and Peter, her husband, a long and happy retirement in Lincolnshire.

There were nearly 200 exhibits in the Capel Spring Show held on Sunday 7th April in the Village Hall. This was about the same number that have been entered over the past 3 years and reflected the increase in the number and standard of entries for the Children’s and Home craft classes because, as might be expected. the number of flower and vegetable entries were down. The

Children’s Judge, Rita Ball, had a difficult task as the quality of the entries was very good. In the end, Amelia Chilvers won the Greenwood Cup and Laura Grundy, a psat winner, gained the Coke Trophy. Anne Co le had some wonderful entries for the flower and vegetable classes whilst Suzanne Burlinson gained the most points for her cookery entries.

The flower arrangement ‘Spring is Sprung’ entered by Alexandra Fairbrother was judged to be the best horticultural exhibit.

Plant Sale – May 11th at 10am

The next Plant Sale organised by the Horticultural Society will be held in the Memorial Hall. Doors open at lOam sharp. There will be a selection of plants including vegetable sand flowers. It has been a difficult growrng season but we will try to have as good a selection as we can.

There will also be a Garden Jumble outside the Hall (weather permitting) so if you have old equipment, pots or other garden items you want to recycle, please bring them along before 10 o’clock on the day,

MRS DAVIS, HEAD TEACHER AT THE WEALD

News From Scott-Broadwood C Of E Infant School

I find it hard to believe that we are already in the Summer Term. The children are now busy learning about how plants grow, and the different plants that are growing ;n the local area. At the beginning of May (weather permitting) the whole school will be walking up Leith Hili with Ruby Cole, the National Trust warden, leading the walk. We will spend the dayenjoying the walk, and particularly looking at the different plants and trees that grow on Leith Hill. The children benefit enormously from vis.iting such a beautiful location so close to the school and always enjoy their experience of the day.

Our Traditional May Fair will be held at the Ockley Base on Saturday, 18th May. This is always a great occasion, with lots of traditional games for children to enjoy and food and drink for everyone. We will be selling raffle tickets in advance of the fair with same fantastic prizes. This is a great oppOrtunity for everyone to support your Village school. We are raising funds to create a ‘quiet area’ on the playgrounds for children to be able to sit In if they prefer a bit of quiet time at playtime and

lunchtime. These areas will be a real improvement to our grounds and we are really looking forward to developing them with the children.

Towards the end of the month, we will be welcoming our new children to the school for the first time. At Scott-Broadwood, our children start visiting the school in the summer, so that by the time they start With us in September, school feels familiar and the children are all ready to start full time from the start of the term. This is always an exciting time, as we get to know the new children and their families.

The Evergreens

On March 18th we had a fish and chip lunch, which was enjoyed by many of us, followed by a slide show, presented by MickMansbridge. This took us down memory lane, as most of the slides were of our outings. We then had a slide quiz given by Mich Cope, which consisted of shots of places Visited by The Evergreens; its surprising how quickly we forget and no one had all the answers correct (it must be an age thing!). Members had been asked to make Easter Bonnets and Easter Cards and these were judged after the slide show The winner of the best had was Christine Morse and the best card went to Anne Warren.

The following Monday we were due to .go to Duxford and Cambridge but we had to cancel at  the last minute due to bad weather. However, we intend to go at a later date an hopefully the weather will be better by then.

If anyone wishes to join us, we would be pleased to see you and if you Wish to know more just give me a ring on 712827.
