A “Great Big” Thank You

This is a “Great Big” thank you to everyone for supporting the Capel Music Festival 2014!

Without the help of dozens of volunteers, local businesses, stall holders, sponsors, advertisers and many more people who gave their time, skills and resources for free or at minimal cost, this event could not happen.

We are delighted to announce that this year we raised a massive £7,300.

The main CMF charity, The Amber Foundation have received a donation of £5,000 and the remains funds will provide support to many other local charities, yet to be decided. The CMF are particularly grateful to the Dorking Advertiser who were the media sponsor again this year and were very generous in providing regular coverage of all actives and events associated with the Festival.

The Capel Music Festival is a fantastic and fun way for our community to work together and support and make a difference to all sorts of worthy causes. If you feel you are a worthy cause and have a particular project you need money for please contact Emma, details below to make an application. If you would like to get involved in future events please contact us via Emma Jaques, we would love to hear from you. Emma can be contacted via info@capelmusicfestival.org.uk.

The 6th Annual Capel Music Festival to Feature Top Acts, Local Beers, Food Stalls, Kids’ Zone & More….

On Sunday 6th August Capel will once again play host to the annual Capel Music Festival which will feature a superb line-up of popular acts including The Prognosis, ERIKA, The SoulCatz, New Rising and also Sweet Revenge while raising much needed funds for local charities. As in previous years, there will  also be a beer and cider tent courtesy of the Dorking Brewery, a variety of delicious food stalls, a kids’ zone, a VIP area and some fabulous raffle prizes up for grabs.

Now in its sixth year, the Capel Music Festival will be raising money for Ockley-based charity Amber as well as a number of smaller local charities.

Amber is an active and accommodating residential centre helping disadvantaged 17-30 year olds and provides 24 hour care and support every day of the year for young homeless people; many have a history of addiction or have been involved in crime or have been in prison. Able to support up to 32 individuals, it provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help overcome each of the obstacles that have previous stood between them and independent living. Working in teams they experience positive peer support, feel valued and motivated. There are many opportunities at Amber including art, crafts, extended education, music, drama and sport. Everyone is encouraged to set their own goals and  begins to realise that with work, commitment, enthusiasm and determination, they are in fact able to achieve and fulfil potential. For further information regarding Amber please contact Rachel Bartlett on  07879 415716 or email rachel.bartlett@amberweb.org
To date, the confirmed line-up of acts is as follows:

  •  The Prognosis – recently voted winners of Prog Rock Magazines Best Unsigned 2 Band Award 2013, The prognosis originate from Dorking. Formed in 2005, The prognosis are musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds – an organ scholar, an experimental synth-guitarist, an experienced jazz-rock drummer and two seasoned campaigners from the party-band circuit. Their passion is to recreate and perform a variety of classic prog-rock tracks with a level of authenticity and expertise befitting this music era as well as writing new progressive rock songs – but with a modern twist. Today there are many tribute bands who focus on playing the work of only one band but The Prognosis is different. The band is a tribute to the genre and a time of incredible musical innovation. Their typical set list includes music from Genesis, Pink Floyd, Focus, Camel, ELP, Rush, Supertramp. Steve Hackett and Jethro Tull as well as their own original compositions.
  • ERIKA — Erika has emerged from a life coloured by the musical corners of London town and japan. While it was initially opera and musical theatre in which she found her voice, as her birthdays passed she discovered the soundtrack to her early daydreams and pop greats such as Kylie and Carly Simon had their influence. Later ERIKA found herself as much at home with the 90s rave scene as she did with the heavy rock scene and from this union of diversity emerges a style of ‘epic pop’. But don’t get complacent. ERIKA is not all catchy riffs and bubblegum. There is a darkness to her songs that you don’t  have to dig that deep to find.
  • Newrising – drawing influence from  a massive musical spectrum, Newrising combine elements of funk roots, urban soul, raggae, blues, rock and Latin. A distinctive sense of musical character resides throughout their infectious, well-sculpted songs. They have shared stages with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Newton  Faulknew, Mungo Jerry and IOCC to name just a few. Newrising have also appeared at many of the UK’s best and biggest festivals including Bestival and Secret Garden Party as well as travelling abroad to play the Virgin Holiday’s Music Festival in Barbados two years running. They are currently working on their second album having caught the ears and imagination of Ed Sheeran and many more with their first. Here is a band worth keeping an ear to the ground for.
  • Sweet Revenge – a fabulous, energetic young band who write their own material of distinct rock, from the hard and fast “You Don’t Know Me” to the anthemic “Looking for Rock”. Sweet Revenge have been influenced by AC/DC, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, What Now, Bullet From My Valentine and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They have spent the last two years gaining crucial live experience at East Court’s Picnic in the Park and The Arc at Caterham, twice winning the coveted prize of “Battle of the Bands” at school, performing at Esher’s ‘Celebration of Youth’ and, finally, not forgetting the school assemblies! They are gathering momentum and gaining plenty of attention. Between school, homework and exams, the boys have managed to write a dozen songs and to save enough pocket money to record 4 of them at Coach Road Studios. This is just the
    beginning!

There are still a number of sponsorship opportunities available and organisers are also keen to hear from businesses that would like to donate prizes to the raffle or take a stall on the day. Businesses wishing to discuss sponsorship opportunities or donate raffle prizes should contact Sandra Collins on 07899 80156l or email sandra@gcld.co.uk

Capel Music Festival

Dear Readers,

We are delighted to announce that this year’s event raised a fantastic £14,700 which will be split between its chosen charities, St Catherine’s Hospice and The Studio ADHD Centre in Capel. A number of smaller local charities and organisations are also benefiting including Capel Youth Club, the Capel Cricket pavilion and the Amber Foundation in Ockley, Capel Pre-School and the Capel Guides and Scouts groups. The event attracted over 2,000 visitors.

The team are planning to put the event on again next year. It takes a lot of organisation so with more people involve it would mean the workload could be spread. We are looking for volunteers to join the CMF team for the festival August 2013. We require a number of roles such as gathering sponsors, preparing food and putting up signs. Please consider offering a few hours of help before the event, or on the day. Please contact Emma Jaques on 077415 475779, ekejaques@yahoo.co.uk .

Thank you!!

The 5th Capel Music Festival – 5 Aspects

Matthew, 11 – The Capel Music Festival was for a good cause because a lot of money was donated to charity. I think a wide range of people enjoyed the event since a wide range of music was played and there was lots of different stalls to enjoy. It was a good idea to have a ‘Capel’s Got Talent’ competition on Saturday night because fund for the kids and Studio ADHD were given lots of money that night! My favourite part of the festival was the act in the talent show where they used a pole that was on fire!

Mark – Not only did Mark host a pre-event in June, but he has tirelessly been the backbone (pun intended) alongside Phil W. of the sound, bands, roadying, mixing and continuity – throughout our 5 events this year, and years before.

Luke – This is I think the 3rd year that Luke has run the bar for the whole Big Weekend, adding the Capel Beer Festival to the already-heady mix, and he has done it excellently right from the start.

And John(s) – There were John’s everywhere, helping on the PA, gates, main bar, Studio ADHD stall, behind and in front of the VIP bar, and in the choir – and that’s only the ones I saw. Another I think I saw dancing with his grand-daughter.

Numbers

1 very young person is still with us, because 1 Amber guy acted very quickly.

11 brilliants acts on the bill.

12 on the CMF committee Choir Practice

25 (maybe) tons moved (e.g. 1 tonne of tables moved 7+ times + stage, PA, Spokes, Bins, Chairs, Bar, ….)

100 listed as volunteers, and more – Funktion 1, Scouts, Guides, Edes, Hortis, Classics,

2,000+ attending

15,000 pounds, probably to charities this year

A Million thanks, Capel – “ARE YOU OUT THERE ?”

Phil P.

The Studio ADHD Centre

As you may know, I am the Chairperson of The Studio ADHD Centre, a charity based in Capel. The Studio provides a unique relaxed environment for children and young adults who have Attention Deficit Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome. The work of the Centre includes individual counseling sessions for young people, parents, partners and siblings.

Its work sometimes includes crisis intervention and advocacy with child protection, criminal justice and family issues.

As part of the necessary fund raising for the Studio, I will once again be running a tombola stall at this year’s Capel Music Festival and I would welcome any items you can spare. The tombola stall will have all types of prize so anything you are prepared to donate will be most acceptable, absolutely anything.

In addition there will be a raffle and I intent making up a mixed hamper as a prize (mostly food/drink related but nothing ruled in or out), anything that would be suitable to fill that would be most welcome.
