Capel Parish Notes For September

MVDC Housing and Traveller Sites Plan – Responses to this are now being considered by the District Council which aims to publish a proposed submission version in early 2015. This document will outline which sites MVDC believes are the most suitable for development and there will then be a formal six week consultation on that document.

Planning Matters – Proposed Solar Panel Development

The Parish Council is concerned that because the consultation period for Application Reference No Mo/2014/1092 falls during the summer holidays residents may not be aware that there is a proposal for a Solar Panel Development at Cracker Barrel Farm on land adjacent to the A24 Capel By-Pass, Horsham Road, Beare Green. This would involve the construction of a 12.6 hectare (over 40 acre) solar farm and associated works which would be constructed on rising land on either side of the A24 between Wigmore Lane and the Beare Green Roundabout. Details can be viewed by clicking on the Link to the Mole Valley website.

The Parish Council response to the application can be seen on the PC website: www.capel-pc.gov.uk under Council documents.

Responses will still be considered up until the beginning of October so please do respond to MVDC is you have not already done so.

Summer At Scott-Broadwood School

What a busy summer term we are having at Scott-Broadwood school. Both bases have been learning about minibeats so we have been pond dipping, watching caterpillars grow and turn into butterflies and learn to fly. We had papier mache bugs and learnt about minibeats that come out at night. It is also the term for fairs, fetes, summer pageants and rose queens. The maypoles are out and the children are learning some traditional country dances. Now the children are thinking about journeys, holidays and different types of transport; and we are all enjoying the warm sunny weather.

It is also a term for thinking about changes, as we say goodbye to our older children who are moving on to other schools and saying welcome to the young children who are joining us in September. Teachers are beginning to think forward to the next school year – different children in their classes and exciting topics to prepare for. Mrs Burton’s life will change as she moves into motherhood and we wish her well in this new venture.

Tribute To The People Of Capel During The Great War 1914-1918

This is the sixth and final article to be submitted in tribute to the people of Capel who lived through the war, using local evidence of the time. With the centenary of the outbreak of the war on 4th August 1914, there will be many local, national and international commemorations. The experiences of Capel people were reflected all over the country.

On 17th September, 1914, Lt. Evelyn Broadwood, of Lyne house, in a letter to his sister, Audrey, wrote from France ‘The War can scarcely last long at this pace…. People here give the war another month or so to last and the sooner it is over the better in many ways…. Don’t forget not to leave the house empty in case the enemy lands, which I hope won’t happen.’

However, still on 28th May 1918, the Rector of Newdigate wrote that he had been asked to help at Capel services since the Capel Vicar, the Rev. C.F. Carver, is likely to be called up soon to act as a Chaplain in France….. men of military age up to 45, and to 50 prospectively, shall offer themselves for national service’.

The 6th Annual Capel Music Festival to Feature Top Acts, Local Beers, Food Stalls, Kids’ Zone & More….

On Sunday 6th August Capel will once again play host to the annual Capel Music Festival which will feature a superb line-up of popular acts including The Prognosis, ERIKA, The SoulCatz, New Rising and also Sweet Revenge while raising much needed funds for local charities. As in previous years, there will  also be a beer and cider tent courtesy of the Dorking Brewery, a variety of delicious food stalls, a kids’ zone, a VIP area and some fabulous raffle prizes up for grabs.

Now in its sixth year, the Capel Music Festival will be raising money for Ockley-based charity Amber as well as a number of smaller local charities.

Amber is an active and accommodating residential centre helping disadvantaged 17-30 year olds and provides 24 hour care and support every day of the year for young homeless people; many have a history of addiction or have been involved in crime or have been in prison. Able to support up to 32 individuals, it provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help overcome each of the obstacles that have previous stood between them and independent living. Working in teams they experience positive peer support, feel valued and motivated. There are many opportunities at Amber including art, crafts, extended education, music, drama and sport. Everyone is encouraged to set their own goals and  begins to realise that with work, commitment, enthusiasm and determination, they are in fact able to achieve and fulfil potential. For further information regarding Amber please contact Rachel Bartlett on  07879 415716 or email rachel.bartlett@amberweb.org
To date, the confirmed line-up of acts is as follows:

  •  The Prognosis – recently voted winners of Prog Rock Magazines Best Unsigned 2 Band Award 2013, The prognosis originate from Dorking. Formed in 2005, The prognosis are musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds – an organ scholar, an experimental synth-guitarist, an experienced jazz-rock drummer and two seasoned campaigners from the party-band circuit. Their passion is to recreate and perform a variety of classic prog-rock tracks with a level of authenticity and expertise befitting this music era as well as writing new progressive rock songs – but with a modern twist. Today there are many tribute bands who focus on playing the work of only one band but The Prognosis is different. The band is a tribute to the genre and a time of incredible musical innovation. Their typical set list includes music from Genesis, Pink Floyd, Focus, Camel, ELP, Rush, Supertramp. Steve Hackett and Jethro Tull as well as their own original compositions.
  • ERIKA — Erika has emerged from a life coloured by the musical corners of London town and japan. While it was initially opera and musical theatre in which she found her voice, as her birthdays passed she discovered the soundtrack to her early daydreams and pop greats such as Kylie and Carly Simon had their influence. Later ERIKA found herself as much at home with the 90s rave scene as she did with the heavy rock scene and from this union of diversity emerges a style of ‘epic pop’. But don’t get complacent. ERIKA is not all catchy riffs and bubblegum. There is a darkness to her songs that you don’t  have to dig that deep to find.
  • Newrising – drawing influence from  a massive musical spectrum, Newrising combine elements of funk roots, urban soul, raggae, blues, rock and Latin. A distinctive sense of musical character resides throughout their infectious, well-sculpted songs. They have shared stages with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Newton  Faulknew, Mungo Jerry and IOCC to name just a few. Newrising have also appeared at many of the UK’s best and biggest festivals including Bestival and Secret Garden Party as well as travelling abroad to play the Virgin Holiday’s Music Festival in Barbados two years running. They are currently working on their second album having caught the ears and imagination of Ed Sheeran and many more with their first. Here is a band worth keeping an ear to the ground for.
  • Sweet Revenge – a fabulous, energetic young band who write their own material of distinct rock, from the hard and fast “You Don’t Know Me” to the anthemic “Looking for Rock”. Sweet Revenge have been influenced by AC/DC, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, What Now, Bullet From My Valentine and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They have spent the last two years gaining crucial live experience at East Court’s Picnic in the Park and The Arc at Caterham, twice winning the coveted prize of “Battle of the Bands” at school, performing at Esher’s ‘Celebration of Youth’ and, finally, not forgetting the school assemblies! They are gathering momentum and gaining plenty of attention. Between school, homework and exams, the boys have managed to write a dozen songs and to save enough pocket money to record 4 of them at Coach Road Studios. This is just the
    beginning!

There are still a number of sponsorship opportunities available and organisers are also keen to hear from businesses that would like to donate prizes to the raffle or take a stall on the day. Businesses wishing to discuss sponsorship opportunities or donate raffle prizes should contact Sandra Collins on 07899 80156l or email sandra@gcld.co.uk

Stylehurst Farm Coffee Morning

A really big thank you to everyone who supported my coffee morning at Stylehurst Farm. We raised an amazing £1,200 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, which will be put towards the funding of research in finding the causes, treatments and hopefully prevention of this dreadful disease.
We were so lucky to have a perfect day, with the sun shining and a gentle breeze, and it was lovely to see so many friends from Capel and around enjoying the day.
A particular thank you to everyone who helped with the organisation, especially the gardeners who provided so many wonderful plants for us to sell. Your support and generosity is very much appreciated.
lf anyone would like more information about the work of Alzheimer’s Research UK, please go to their website, www.alzheimersresearchuk.org

Bird Watching Courses

Have you ever seen an interesting bird in your garden or whilst out walking, and wondered what it
was? And what about that wonderful song a bird was singing the other day? There are So many
interesting birds right on our doorstep, or just a short distance away, that are worth looking at and
learning about, so l have created some interesting informative bird watching courses to inspire you.
They cover a wide number of birding topics such as a basic introduction to birds and how bird
watching has developed into a major recreational pastime. There is a brief introduction to bird
watching techniques, how to recognise different bird behaviour, where to see certain species and what
to expect to see in certain habitats. I will guide you through the best suitable equipment needed to
enhance the experience of bird watching, including binoculars, bird guides and technology supporting
identification. Being able to identify birds is the key to enjoying this wonderful hobby, so I will cover
a large spectrum of British birds from common garden and woodland birds, warblers to water birds
and many more including an introduction to less common but very interesting species that in fact with
a little guidance, can be fairly easily located and seen.
The courses have already been running from Juniper Hall, near Box Hill, Dorking, and there will be
another set of courses starting there in September. There is also to be a set of courses starting later
this month from Chesworth Farm nature reserve in Horsham. The courses themselves consist of a
mixture of classroom based presentations and field trips to put those  newly learned skills into practice,
bird watching in some other interesting locations.
They are available through Viewpoint Outdoor part of Astronomia (the telescope shop in Dorking)
and can be booked on line at http://viewpointoutdoor.co.uk/ courses/courses-birds/discovering-birds-course.html or by phoning me, Derrick Robinson on 07753 719170 I look forward to being able to introduce you to the wonders of the bird world. Bird watching is a   brilliant hobby and it’s growing. Try it and see.

Consultation on MVDC Housing and Traveller Sites Plan – Additional Sites ends on July 21st 2014

The Parish Council has drawn up a draft response which is able to read under ‘Council Documents’ on its web site at www.capel-pc.gov.uk . This document will be discussed at the meeting of the Parish Council Planning Committee on Monday July 7th in the  Committee Room at Capel Village Hall starting at 7:30pm. The meeting is open to the public.

MVDC is also holding a ‘drop in’ event at the Beare Green Village Hall, Merebank on Wednesday 2nd July from 3.0pm till 8.00pm when members of the MVDC Planning Policy Team will be available to answer your questions on the additional sites for Capel, Beare Green, Hookwood and Charlwood.

Gatwick

New Flight Paths: Gatwick Airport Ltd have launched phase 2 of the Gatwick Airport Airspace Consultation, their plans to redraw many of the flight paths around Gatwick. The document is at: www.gatwickairport.com/gatwickairspaceconsultation . These proposals could have serious impact on many towns and villages around the airport and will potentially affect an area from Guilford to Tunbridge Wells and from Petworth to Sevenoaks.

The 60-page consultation document is written in technical language and is difficult for the layperson to understand. The Parish Council will be drawing up bullet points to include in its response to the consultation at the meeting of the Parish Council’s Planning Committee on July 7th 2014 at 7.30pm in the Committee Room at Capel Village Hall. The meeting is open to the public so is you require further information on how to respond you are welcome to attend. The consultation finishes on Friday 15th August. Please note that the proposed new flight paths all relate to the existing runway. If ever a new Gatwick runway were to be built, all the flight paths will need to be revised, with new flight paths over areas at present peaceful.

Gatwick Coordination Group

MPs Crispin Blunt, Sir Paul Beresford, Rt Hon Sir Nicholas Soames, Rt Hon Sir John Stanley, and Charles Hendry have formed the Gatwick Coordination Group following a meeting at the House of commons on Wednesday 11th June 2014.

The Gatwick Coordination Group is established to represent the serious local concern at the plan for a second runway at Gatwick Airport which has been shortlisted by the Davies Commission. Gatwick Airport Limited (GAL) has made its submission to Sir Howard Davies, which is yet to be published. Sir Howard’s Commission will make its recommendation on airport capacity to the government in 2015.

The group released the following statement:

“We believe that the building of a second runway at Gatwick Airport would be a disaster for the surrounding communities and environment. The level of development, associated with an airport serving nearly three times as many passengers as it does now, would devastate the local environment and leave the UK with its major airport in the wrong place.

There is also no adequate plan yet presented to provide the necessary infrastructure, of all types, to support this development.

The size of Gatwick site only lends itself to a single runway airport, serving as a sensible, competitive alternate to London’s main hub airport. While they pursue that objective, Gatwick Airport Limited will have our support, but this proposal is not in the local interest, nor is it in the national interest, and this group will work to prove that case.”
