News From Scott-Broadwood March 2015

Our topic this term at Scott Broadwood has been space. We’ve also been talking about Recycling. Combining the two we held a Box-Troll Recycling Day!

The classes mixed up and the children had to work together on their plans. They designed an enormous rocket and then had to find the right modelling bits for each part of the rocket. Fixing the bits together took a lot of thought as they wanted to make sure it was secure and would survive a trip into space. They also made a Box-Troll family to send off in the rocket. Altogether it was a great day for teamwork and construction skills (And lots of fun!).

Commenting on the day the children said…. they liked being creative and using their imagination, liked working with different children, liked the painting and getting messy, liked the sticking and gluing.

Astronaut food has also been made and eaten – it was yummy!

A pink, yoghurt looking mixture which had to be put in individual plastic bags so it didn’t float around the space ship.

Next term one of our topics is Journeys – where we will travel to and how will we get there?

Summer At Scott-Broadwood School

What a busy summer term we are having at Scott-Broadwood school. Both bases have been learning about minibeats so we have been pond dipping, watching caterpillars grow and turn into butterflies and learn to fly. We had papier mache bugs and learnt about minibeats that come out at night. It is also the term for fairs, fetes, summer pageants and rose queens. The maypoles are out and the children are learning some traditional country dances. Now the children are thinking about journeys, holidays and different types of transport; and we are all enjoying the warm sunny weather.

It is also a term for thinking about changes, as we say goodbye to our older children who are moving on to other schools and saying welcome to the young children who are joining us in September. Teachers are beginning to think forward to the next school year – different children in their classes and exciting topics to prepare for. Mrs Burton’s life will change as she moves into motherhood and we wish her well in this new venture.

Tribute To The People Of Capel During The Great War 1914-1918

This is the sixth and final article to be submitted in tribute to the people of Capel who lived through the war, using local evidence of the time. With the centenary of the outbreak of the war on 4th August 1914, there will be many local, national and international commemorations. The experiences of Capel people were reflected all over the country.

On 17th September, 1914, Lt. Evelyn Broadwood, of Lyne house, in a letter to his sister, Audrey, wrote from France ‘The War can scarcely last long at this pace…. People here give the war another month or so to last and the sooner it is over the better in many ways…. Don’t forget not to leave the house empty in case the enemy lands, which I hope won’t happen.’

However, still on 28th May 1918, the Rector of Newdigate wrote that he had been asked to help at Capel services since the Capel Vicar, the Rev. C.F. Carver, is likely to be called up soon to act as a Chaplain in France….. men of military age up to 45, and to 50 prospectively, shall offer themselves for national service’.

News from Scott Broadwood – December

I find it very hard to believe that this is my last parish magazine article as Head Teacher at Scott Broadwood, Over the last five years, I have led the school as it has continued to grow together as one school in two villages, with the whole team of staff, children and governors. I was delighted that the children’s academic achievements this year reflect the hard work of the staff and children alike, continuing to build on improvements from previous years and maintaining our achievements above the average both nationally and in Surrey.

Throughout my time at Scott-Broadwood, the community support for the school has been a real asset. The school is here to provide education to the local community and to ensure that children in the villages can begin their formal education close to home. Your support for this continues to be vital and very much appreciated by all of us who are part of the school community.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those of YOLl who have supported and helped me personally in anyway throughout my time here. I have many very fond memories of my time at the school and look forward to hearing of its continued success in the future. MrsMuat joins the school as Head Teacher from January and I wish her every success in leading the school from strength to strength.

Our Christmas Market is on Saturday, 7th December 12·3pm at Capel. There will be a variety of stalls for you to purchase Christmas gifts and treats, and a variety of craft activities for children with mince pies, mulled wine, tea, coffee and soup available during the afternoon. Please come along and support this event, or buy some raffle tickets beforehand!

Much of our focus at school in December is ensuring that the children understand the true meaning of Christmas, and share this with family and friends at our Nativities. I am always impressed by the way in which all of our children contribute to these performances. speaking clearly to an audience and acting with great feeling and understanding. Our final celebration will be our Carol Service and Whole School ‘Christmas Pause Day’ when the whole school comes together at our Cape I Base to celebrate Christmas and reflect and learn about the Biblical stories of Jesus’ birth.

Scott Broadwood News – November 2013

As I write, we ahve just celebrated Harvest Festival at Scott-Broadwood. I am always amazed by the children’s confidence, speaking so clarly in front of an audience in a large building. For some our our children, who have only been in school for a few weeks, just to stand up and act in front of an audience is a great achievement. This is one of the many advantages for children being in a small school: everyone takes an active part in all our celebrations.

Children at Capel also go to see the Harvest for real, on our annual visit to see the Maize being harvested in the village. The children were a credit to their parents and the school, coping brilliantly with a long walk to watch the harvest and then walking back to school carrying their own crop! These children truly understand where their food comes from.

By the time you read this, we will be busy after half term, having just celebrated Bonfire Night. This is the perfect time for all those of you with young children to come and see the school for yourselves – it’s never too early to start seeing what school will be like when your child is ready to start school. At our Open Mornings, you will be able to see the school in actionm with the usual wide variety of activities and opportunities for all the children.

For those of you who have a child who will have thier 4th birthday between September 1st 2013 and August 31st 2014, you need to apply for your child’s school place by January 15th 2013. Please phone the school to arrange an appointment to come and visit us, or come aloong to our Open Mornings: Tuesday 5th November at Ockley and Wednesday 6th November at Capel. Timings at both bases 9:30 – 11:30am.

News From Scott-Broadwood C of E Infant School – September 13

We start the new academic year by welcoming new members of staff to our school community. Mrs Dowse joins us as Senior Teach at Ockley, Ms Redsell joins us as Senior Scool Assistant, also at Ockley. Both Mrs Dowse and Ms Redsell visited the school several times during the Summer Term, and we are all looking forward to getting to know them better in the new term. The children have all met Mrs Dowse on several occasions and our new Reception children at Ockley have all enjoyed their induction visits with Mrs Dowse.

The children will be learning about ‘people who help us’ as their topic for the first half of term, so we will be out and about in the villages finding out who helps us and what they do. If you volunteer for anything or help other people, you might find yourself being asked questions by our children in the weeks ahead.

During this year, all our children will take part in Forest School afternoons with Miss Myers, who has now completed her training. We are really looking forward to using our local environment to enhance the children’s learning and help them to understand how to lear and play in local outdoor places safely. Children develop new friendships in a different environment and improve their self-confidence by using skills in a different way.

For those of you have a child who will have their 4th birthday between September 1st 203 and August 31st 2014, now is the time to come and visit us to find out more about the children’s learning and opportunities at Scott-Broadwood. Please phone the school to arrange an appointment, or come along to our Open Mornings: Tuesday, 5th November at Ockley and Wednesday, 6th November at Capel. Timings at both bases 9:30 – 11:30pm.

News From Scott-Broadwood C Of E Infant School – July 2013

As we come to the end of the school year, we are approaching a time of great change at Scott-Broadwood. This summer we will be saying farewell to two very long-serving members of staff; both Mrs Rice and Mrs Butcher will be retiring and we wish them long, relaxing and fun retirements.

Mrs Rice joined the school in 1996 and since that time has taught in our Reception and Year 1 class at the Ockley base. I’m sure every child who has been in her class has a particular memory of that time. I will always remember her delight when a child first writes their name, or joins in an activity with other children; such important milestones for all children in their first year at school. Mrs Rice has seen great periods of change during her time with us, particularly the new classrooms being built. Her legacy will live on at Scott-Broadwood for many years to come, and we particularly thank her for her leadership of the ‘Early Year’ and the Ockley base during her time.

Mrs Butcher joined the school in 1985 and during tose 28 years she has always been part of our admin team, and has supervised the children at lunchtime. She has encouraged children to leave their parents happily in the mornings, and looked after children who are not feeling well or who have fallen over. Behind the scenes, Mrs Butcher has organised many aspects of school finances, most recently the ‘school fund’, making sure that all visits and extra activities are paid for, and that ther is enough money to pay for those little extras. Mrs Butcher has also been a greatly-valued listening and supportive ear to parents for a whole generation of children coming to the school.

It is almost impossible to imagine the school without Mrs Butcher and Mrs Rice, as they have both made a huge contribution to school life. Both are great friends to many members of staff and we will miss them in September. In honour of their retirements, we will be holding a day of celebrations on Tuesday, 23rd July. Any former staff, governor, parent or pupil are invited to come to wish them well, between 4 and 5:30pm at the Ockley base. Please phone the Capel base (01306 711171) or email info@scott-broadwood.surrey.sch.uk if you are planning to attend.

Just before half term we had our Ofsted Inspection and I am delighted to be able to announce that the inspection team judged Scott-Broadwod as a Good School in all areas. This is a great reflection of the hard work and dedication of the children, staff, governors, parents and volunteers, who make our school such a wonderful place.

News From Scott-Broadwood C Of E Infant School

I find it hard to believe that we are already in the Summer Term. The children are now busy learning about how plants grow, and the different plants that are growing ;n the local area. At the beginning of May (weather permitting) the whole school will be walking up Leith Hili with Ruby Cole, the National Trust warden, leading the walk. We will spend the dayenjoying the walk, and particularly looking at the different plants and trees that grow on Leith Hill. The children benefit enormously from vis.iting such a beautiful location so close to the school and always enjoy their experience of the day.

Our Traditional May Fair will be held at the Ockley Base on Saturday, 18th May. This is always a great occasion, with lots of traditional games for children to enjoy and food and drink for everyone. We will be selling raffle tickets in advance of the fair with same fantastic prizes. This is a great oppOrtunity for everyone to support your Village school. We are raising funds to create a ‘quiet area’ on the playgrounds for children to be able to sit In if they prefer a bit of quiet time at playtime and

lunchtime. These areas will be a real improvement to our grounds and we are really looking forward to developing them with the children.

Towards the end of the month, we will be welcoming our new children to the school for the first time. At Scott-Broadwood, our children start visiting the school in the summer, so that by the time they start With us in September, school feels familiar and the children are all ready to start full time from the start of the term. This is always an exciting time, as we get to know the new children and their families.
